To keep a YouTube radio livestream archive manageable, end each broadcast before it reaches 12 hours and start a new stream for the next session. YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a separate local recording as a backup, then manage each replay in YouTube Studio.
Why a YouTube radio livestream replay can become a problem
A continuous radio broadcast may produce one very long replay, and there is an important distinction between a long replay and a replay YouTube does not capture. YouTube Help’s “Archive live streams” page says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” The page does not display a publication date in the material reviewed; the 12-hour guidance was accessed in 2026.
For a continuous station, treat that threshold as a reason to divide programming into separate broadcasts, not as a target to hit exactly. Leave a practical buffer below 12 hours in case the show runs late or the stream does not end when expected. YouTube does not prescribe a universal session length for radio, so choose a cadence that suits your programming and handoff needs.
How to split a continuous radio broadcast into manageable archives
- Choose a session length below 12 hours. Set a daily, scheduled, or otherwise practical handoff that reliably ends each broadcast before the documented boundary.
- Prepare the next stream before ending the current one. If continuity matters, configure the upcoming broadcast in advance. YouTube’s encoder workflow supports scheduled streams and reusing prior stream settings; see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- End the current stream and start the next session. Each completed session can then have its own replay and archive-management decision rather than accumulating as one uninterrupted broadcast.
- Record locally as well. YouTube Help recommends recording a local archive as a backup. Verify that the recording exists and plays before relying on it for retention. The storage required depends on your recording format and bitrate; there is no single drive capacity that can be inferred without those details.
How to hide, organize, or delete a completed replay
After a broadcast, open YouTube Studio and go to Content > Live. Find the replay and choose the action that matches whether you want to keep it and who should be able to watch it. YouTube’s Archive live streams guidance describes changing replay visibility or deleting the replay.

| Choice | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Private or unlisted visibility | Changes who can access the replay without deleting it. | You want to retain a channel copy but limit its audience. |
| Delete | Removes the replay from your channel. | You do not want to retain that replay in the account. |
| Playlist | Groups archives or highlights for organization; it does not shorten the underlying replay. | You want to arrange the available content into programs, dates, or highlights. |
YouTube recommends organizing archives and highlights into playlists in its Promote your live stream guidance. A playlist is an organizational tool, not a substitute for changing a replay’s visibility when your goal is to keep it from being publicly available.
What DVR does—and does not do
DVR controls whether viewers can pause or rewind while a live broadcast is in progress. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable for very long streams. Turning DVR off does not prevent a recording from appearing after the stream ends; it is not an archive-length or replay-visibility setting. See Turn on DVR on live streams.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your radio format uses uploaded recordings rather than a live camera or microphone, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube channel live from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos, so nothing has to stay on at home. The stream uses your uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start a free first day at StreamNeo.
