To keep a YouTube radio livestream active after its playlist ends, make sure the playback or streaming software continues sending valid audio and video. YouTube’s playlist Loop control repeats playback for a viewer; it does not keep an encoder livestream alive. Turn on repeat in the software feeding the encoder, or arrange an appropriate fallback source, then test the handoff before relying on it unattended.

Why a YouTube livestream ends when a playlist finishes

A livestream depends on a continuing feed from its encoder. If the encoder stops sending content, the stream ends; a playlist reaching its last track does not by itself tell YouTube to replay the playlist. YouTube’s playlist Loop instructions describe viewer-side playlist playback, while its encoder-streaming guidance describes the connection between the encoder feed and the live stream.

That means continuity must be handled upstream: configure the software that plays the radio playlist and sends its audio/video to the encoder to repeat the playlist or move to a valid fallback source when playback reaches the end. The exact control and behavior depend on the software you use; YouTube’s help pages do not provide one universal recipe for third-party radio or encoder software.

How do I keep a YouTube livestream from ending?

  1. Check that the channel can livestream. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. The minimum age to livestream is 16. Review YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements before scheduling a broadcast.
  2. Set continuity in the playlist or playback software. Find that tool’s repeat, loop, playlist-end action, or fallback-source setting. Configure it so playback either starts the playlist again or transitions to permitted audio and video that continues feeding the encoder. Consult the documentation for your chosen software; the YouTube viewer’s playlist Loop control is not a substitute.
  3. Verify the YouTube stream settings. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check the selected stream key and the stream settings before starting. Review auto-start and auto-stop choices as well. YouTube documents these controls as affecting stream start and stop behavior, not as controls for repeating an audio playlist. If you reuse stream settings, YouTube copies the previous selections, so confirm them for each new stream. See YouTube’s encoder-stream setup instructions.
  4. Run a test that reaches the playlist’s end. Start a private or unlisted test stream and let the source reach its final item naturally. Check that the playback software moves to the next loop or fallback, the encoder continues sending content, and the watch page stays live. A test that stops before the last track cannot verify the playlist-end behavior.
  5. Monitor the live output. Use the Live Control Room preview and stream-health information, and check that audio and video are actually present. YouTube recommends preparing the encoder in advance, previewing the stream, testing failover where applicable, checking that viewers can access the channel and watch page, and monitoring audio and video during the event. See its encoder setup recommendations, stream health guidance, and live control room instructions.

How do I loop music on a YouTube livestream?

Loop the playlist in the software that plays it into the stream. YouTube’s viewer-facing playlist Loop feature repeats a playlist during playback for someone watching a playlist; it does not reach back to control the source feeding an encoder. If your playback tool cannot repeat a playlist, configure a supported playlist-end action or fallback bed, slate, or other appropriate media so the encoder keeps sending valid content. Confirm that the tool’s settings apply to the live output, not just to a local preview.

Keep rights and platform rules in mind when selecting repeat or fallback material. The cited YouTube encoder and playlist instructions do not establish that any particular track or fallback is cleared for livestreaming; use content you have permission to stream and follow YouTube’s applicable policies.

What happens when my livestream playlist ends?

If the source stops and the encoder stops transmitting, the livestream can end. If the source is configured to continue with a loop or fallback, the encoder can keep supplying content instead. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings govern stream behavior, but they do not replace playlist continuity settings.

Plan the archive and viewer rewind experience separately from keeping the live feed running. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its DVR guidance says rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams beyond 12 hours. The archive statement is not a promise of a maximum stream duration, and the DVR limitation is a separate behavior. See YouTube’s live-streaming guidance and DVR settings and limitations.

How to end a stream without leaving viewers stranded

If you want the current livestream to end after a planned period rather than loop indefinitely, YouTube Live Redirect can send viewers to a Premiere or another live stream after the current stream ends, subject to eligibility. It is an onward handoff for viewers, not a way to loop the current playlist. Check YouTube’s Live Redirect eligibility and setup guidance before relying on it.

Troubleshooting playlist-end failures

  • The stream ends at the final track: The source or encoder likely stopped rather than repeating. Enable playlist repeat or set a valid end-of-playlist fallback in the playback software, then retest through the last item.
  • The playlist repeats locally, but the live output stops: Check whether the loop setting controls the live source or only a local player. Verify the encoder is still receiving audio and video after the transition.
  • The watch page is not live even though the source is playing: Check the encoder connection, selected stream key, Live Control Room status, and stream-health indicators. Reconnect or restart using the selected software’s documented recovery steps, then verify the watch page again.
  • A reused stream starts or stops unexpectedly: Review auto-start and auto-stop settings in the Live Control Room. Reusing settings copies those prior selections, so confirm they match the intended broadcast.
  • The stream is live but viewers report silence or a blank picture: Check the outgoing audio and video sources, the fallback media, and the Live Control Room preview. A live connection alone does not confirm that useful content is reaching viewers.
  • Viewers cannot rewind or find a complete archive: Check the stream’s duration and YouTube’s separate archive and DVR behavior. Do not assume a very long stream will provide the same rewind experience as a shorter one.
