If FFmpeg reaches the end of a single video file, add -stream_loop -1 before that file’s -i option. This tells FFmpeg to loop that input indefinitely, so it can keep sending audio and video instead of stopping at end-of-file. It does not restart a crashed process or make a multi-file playlist loop automatically.

Loop one input file with FFmpeg

Use this structural example when the same file should repeat:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL"

The example is not a tested, production-ready command for every source. Choose codecs, bitrate, mapping, audio handling, and the output endpoint for your media and YouTube stream configuration. Keep the stream key private; do not put it in published examples or expose it in logs.

Put the loop option before the input

FFmpeg’s command-line options apply to the next input or output and reset between files. Place -stream_loop -1 before the -i it controls. FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input-looping option and -1 as infinite looping: FFmpeg command-line documentation.

Confirm that repeating the content is acceptable

This repeats the same input; it does not create new material. Check that the video and audio are suitable for repetition and that the content is authorized for your channel and stream. If viewers should hear or see different material, configure the playlist or next-item behavior instead.

First identify what “ran out of input files” means

Adding an input loop helps only when a successfully running FFmpeg process reaches the end of a loopable input. Identify the failure before changing the command:

  • One file reached EOF: Use -stream_loop -1 for that input if repeating it is intended.
  • A playlist ended: Make the playlist or concat workflow itself continue, add the next item, or provide a valid fallback. Looping one input does not make a multi-file playlist infinite. Behavior depends on the demuxer and how the playlist is built.
  • FFmpeg exited or failed: Check its exit status and logs. Input looping cannot recover from an encoder crash, invalid media, disk loss, or a broken output connection.
  • YouTube ingest is unhealthy: Check the stream’s messages and status in YouTube Live Control Room. An ingest problem can resemble an input problem, but changing the input loop will not fix a failed connection. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

There is no single verified command here for every playlist format, nor an in-place reload method that works across all input types. Test the specific playlist workflow rather than assuming a hot-reload recipe will work.

Choose the right way to keep media flowing

Approach Use it when Trade-off
Loop one input with -stream_loop -1 The same file is meant to repeat. Simple, but repetition is audible and visible; validate format and timing.
Repeat a playlist or provide a next item Several files should play in sequence. Playlist and demuxer behavior varies, so configure and test the playlist itself.
Send a fallback slate or loop The primary feed may disappear or new media may arrive asynchronously. More complex; the fallback needs compatible audio and video streams and process logic.

These media-continuity choices are separate from process supervision. A supervisor can restart FFmpeg after a process failure; it does not make a finite input infinite unless the command or input is also configured to continue.

Check YouTube output settings and stream health

Set the output for the stream’s selected protocol, codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP and RTMPS, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Recommended bitrate depends on ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the current table for your output mode rather than treating one bitrate as universal: YouTube encoder settings.

  • Prefer RTMPS when supported. YouTube describes it as an encrypted extension of RTMP; keep the stream key confidential.
  • Before scheduling, test with audio and movement similar to the intended stream, then monitor stream health while live. YouTube explains encoder setup and testing at Set up your encoder for live streaming.
  • Check FFmpeg output and YouTube Live Control Room separately. One reports the local process; the other reports what YouTube receives.

Test long-running streams and plan recovery

  1. Run the loop with the exact input file and FFmpeg build you plan to use, before scheduling the live event.
  2. Watch the loop boundary. Confirm audio and video continue; timing, codec, or timestamp characteristics may require transcoding or other handling.
  3. For a playlist, verify that its last item transitions to the intended next item or fallback. Check the output at that boundary.
  4. Monitor FFmpeg’s exit code and logs, and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health as distinct signals.
  5. If the process must survive host or process failures, use a suitable supervisor and alerting. Test that recovery path independently from input looping.

YouTube’s encoder setup help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive policy, not a guarantee that FFmpeg will keep running or that YouTube will accept a single uninterrupted feed indefinitely. Plan supervision and health checks separately for a long-running broadcast.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
FFmpeg stops when the file ends The input is finite and not configured to loop. Place -stream_loop -1 before that input’s -i; confirm the file is the intended repeating content.
The last playlist item ends the stream The playlist workflow has no next item or repeat behavior. Configure and test the playlist or concat workflow itself, or prepare a valid fallback.
FFmpeg exits despite the loop option The process may have failed for another reason, such as invalid media, an encoder error, disk loss, or a broken output connection. Inspect the exit status and logs; looping does not restart a failed process.
FFmpeg appears active but YouTube reports a problem The ingest connection or received stream may be unhealthy. Review the specific Live Control Room stream-health messages and check the output configuration.
Audio or video glitches at the loop boundary The file’s timing, codec, or timestamps may not behave cleanly when repeated. Test the exact media and build; determine whether transcoding or other handling is needed before going live.
The stream key appears in a command log or shared example The credential was exposed. Keep the key private and avoid publishing it. Use RTMPS when supported.
