Run your encoder on the VPS inside a named tmux session, then detach from that session before closing SSH. The encoder can keep running after your laptop or SSH connection disconnects because the session remains on the server. This protects against an SSH-client disconnect only—not an encoder crash, VPS reboot, or provider outage.
What tmux does—and what must already be running
tmux keeps a terminal session on the VPS when you detach or lose the SSH client connection. The key requirement is that the encoder itself is running on the VPS inside that session. A tmux session on your laptop cannot keep a locally running encoder alive after the laptop disconnects or shuts down.
For an Indian VPS, the same arrangement applies as for a VPS elsewhere: SSH into the server, start the encoder in its tmux session, and detach. Your VPS provider’s outbound network capacity and policies still determine whether it can sustain the stream.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart the YouTube stream inside tmux
- Connect to the VPS and check for tmux. SSH into the account that will run the encoder. If
tmuxis not installed, install it using the package manager for your VPS operating system; the exact command depends on the distribution. - Create a named session. Run
tmux new -s youtube-live. The terminal is now inside a session namedyoutube-live. - Configure and start the encoder in that session. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream, then copy its server URL and stream key into your encoder. Start the encoder from the VPS terminal. YouTube explains the encoder connection flow in its encoder setup guidance.
- Detach without stopping the encoder. Press
Ctrl-b, release the keys, then pressd. This detaches your terminal from tmux; it does not close the session or stop the encoder. - Disconnect SSH. You can now close the SSH client. The encoder continues only while the VPS, tmux session, and encoder process remain available.
- Reconnect and inspect the session. SSH back into the same VPS account. Run
tmux lsto list sessions, then runtmux attach -t youtube-liveto return to the encoder terminal. - Stop the stream intentionally. Reattach, stop the encoder cleanly, and exit the tmux session when finished. YouTube says an encoder stream ends when it stops sending content; check the event in Studio rather than assuming that an SSH disconnect ends it.
The tmux manual documents detached sessions and later reattachment. A session is not a backup, process-restart mechanism, or protection against server failure.

Set up YouTube ingest and protect the stream key
YouTube’s server URL and stream key tell the encoder where to send video and allow YouTube to accept the feed. Treat the key as a credential: avoid exposing it in public logs, screenshots, shared command output, or shell history where possible. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance and troubleshooting steps.
Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it; YouTube recommends it as the secure extension of RTMP. Match the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, codec, keyframe interval, and bitrate to both YouTube’s supported settings and the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity. YouTube’s current guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 ingestion options up to 60 fps, recommends CBR, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult the current YouTube settings table for the specific combination you choose.

Check bandwidth and stream health before relying on it
YouTube says the stream’s total bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. That means a local speed test is not enough: check the VPS provider’s network policy and verify sustained outbound throughput from the server. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and motion, checking the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and monitoring the stream during the event. Its streaming tips cover bandwidth and testing.

| Problem | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| SSH client disconnects | The detached tmux session can keep the encoder running. | Reconnect to the VPS and reattach with tmux attach -t youtube-live. |
| Encoder process crashes | tmux does not restart a process that has exited. | Use a service manager or deliberate process supervisor if automatic restart is required, and validate its restart behavior separately. |
| VPS reboots or the host is unavailable | The tmux session does not survive a reboot or make an unavailable host available. | Configure boot-time launch and recovery separately. A provider outage requires provider-side recovery. |
| YouTube rejects or loses the ingest | The encoder may be running while YouTube is not receiving a healthy stream. | Check Live Control Room and encoder errors. If a third-party encoder cannot start, YouTube recommends replacing the stream key and updating the encoder. |
Check channel readiness and the event lifecycle
If this is your channel’s first live stream, YouTube says enabling live streaming may take up to 24 hours. Its getting-started guidance also says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Review YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started requirements before scheduling.

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream from uploaded videos rather than managing an encoder on a VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and gives the first day free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
