Run FFmpeg on a VPS to turn your authorized radio playlist into a continuous audio-and-video stream, then send it to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Use RTMPS where supported, monitor stream health, and prepare for process or connection failures. A VPS can keep your encoder running without a home computer, but neither FFmpeg reconnect options nor a server guarantees that YouTube will preserve the same live event or playback position after an interruption.
Before you start: YouTube, VPS, and rights requirements
- YouTube live access: If this is the channel’s first livestream, enable live streaming in advance. YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours. Create or open a stream in YouTube Studio to obtain its server URL and stream key. Keep the key secret like a password. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- A VPS you can operate: You need a Linux VPS with the playlist files, FFmpeg, and enough sustained outbound network capacity for your selected video and audio bitrate plus overhead. Advertised network capacity does not by itself establish stable ingest performance.
- A valid video track: A radio playlist is audio, but the encoder output should include both audio and video. The video can be a still image or simple visual loop; verify the result in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Permission to stream every track: Confirm the necessary rights for the compositions and recordings, including applicable territories. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. Ask rights owners to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist; otherwise even licensed content may be interrupted. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
Set up a continuous FFmpeg stream
1. Create the YouTube stream
- In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming if needed, then create or open the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the server URL and stream key from the stream settings. Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS ingest where supported. Do not put the stream key in public scripts, logs, screenshots, or source repositories.
- Keep YouTube Live Control Room open during setup so you can confirm that the incoming preview and health indicators are correct before making the stream public.
2. Prepare the playlist and visual
Store the audio files and visual asset on the VPS, and make sure the account running FFmpeg can read them. Build a playlist from content you have permission to stream. Provide a continuous video source, such as a static image or a visual loop, alongside the audio; an audio-only input is not the complete audio-and-video encoder output described by YouTube’s setup workflow.
Plan how the playlist advances and what should happen if a file is missing or unreadable. Test with representative files before going live: a malformed playlist entry or ended input can stop the encoder even when the VPS itself is running.
3. Configure encoder output
YouTube’s encoder settings support H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio, with constant bitrate (CBR) and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval. Do not exceed a 4-second keyframe interval. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists 14 Mbps as recommended and 5 Mbps as the minimum; lower resolutions require less. Its recommended stereo audio bitrate is 128 Kbps. Check the current YouTube encoder settings for the settings that match your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec.
#1 Best Overall
- All-in-One Internet Radio Component: Seamlessly access thousands of global stations via Wi-Fi or LAN, using Skytune, enjoy Podcasts, local FM radio, and stream music from your phone via Bluetooth (Requires external speakers or amplifier—no built-in speaker driver).
- HiFi Integration Ready: Easily connect to your home audio system with stereo line-out or optical output. No built-in speaker—designed as a pure tuner for audiophiles who want flexibility, or if you already have an amplifier or stereo systems to connect with.
- Smart Streaming & Playlist Control: Supports UPnP and DLNA for streaming music from networked PCs or NAS drives. Create and manage playlists or stream directly from your home server.
- Enhanced User Control: Comes with a full-function remote control and 3.2" color screen. Browse stations, set sleep timers, alarms, EQ sound modes, and manage your favorites. Option to display a clock while playing with adjustable dimmer settings.
- Multiple Playback Modes & Alarms: Supports alarm via favorite station, FM, or tone. Sleep timer, kitchen timer, podcast playback with resume function, and remote web control via Skytune website.
Use the YouTube server URL and stream key as the encoder destination, and select RTMPS if available. Ensure the VPS has stable, sustained outbound capacity above the combined video and audio bitrate, with overhead. Validate actual stream health instead of relying only on the VPS plan’s advertised network figure.
4. Start, inspect, and then publish
- Start FFmpeg with your playlist, video source, codec settings, and YouTube ingest credentials.
- Wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then check that both picture and sound are present and that stream health is acceptable.
- Test representative playlist transitions and let the setup run long enough to reveal file, connection, or process issues before relying on it for continuous broadcasting.
- Only after the test looks correct, start or schedule the public broadcast in YouTube Studio as appropriate for the event you created.
YouTube’s encoder workflow separates sending an encoder feed from managing the live event in Studio. Confirm the event’s state in Live Control Room rather than assuming that a running FFmpeg process means viewers can see a live broadcast.

Keep the VPS process recoverable
FFmpeg documents reconnect options for specified network errors and end-of-file behavior. These options can help with some connection or endless-input cases, but they do not guarantee that YouTube will resume the same live event, restore the playlist position, or recover from an invalid key, broken input, or provider outage. Review FFmpeg’s protocol documentation for the relevant reconnect behavior and test the failure cases you expect.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use process supervision on the VPS so an exited encoder can be restarted, and decide how the playlist should resume after a restart. Verify recovery manually before depending on it. A restart may reconnect the encoder while YouTube treats the broadcast differently; check Live Control Room after every recovery rather than assuming continuity.

Monitor the stream and understand archiving
- Watch YouTube Live Control Room health messages during initial operation and check the dashboard promptly if the feed stops or degrades.
- Keep an eye on VPS resource use, the playlist process, and sustained network stability. A VPS can remain reachable while FFmpeg or its input has failed.
- YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer stream will be archived.
Stopping the encoder ends its contribution to the stream. A process restart is not a substitute for checking the YouTube event and its current playback state.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No preview or YouTube does not receive the stream | Incorrect server URL or stream key, unsupported configuration, or ingest connection failure | Recheck the URL and key in YouTube Studio, keep the key private, use RTMPS where supported, and inspect Live Control Room health messages. |
| Audio is present but the picture is missing | The encoder is not producing a valid video track | Confirm the video input is connected to the output and inspect the Live Control Room preview before publishing. |
| Stream health reports instability | Insufficient or inconsistent sustained outbound capacity, or unsuitable encoder settings | Compare combined audio/video bitrate with the VPS’s actual sustained outbound performance; test a lower resolution or bitrate if needed and check YouTube’s current encoder recommendations. |
| FFmpeg exits when a playlist item ends or fails | Input or playlist behavior did not continue as intended | Inspect the playlist and file access, test transitions, and configure and test appropriate FFmpeg reconnect handling and VPS process supervision. |
| Encoder reconnects but the broadcast does not resume as expected | YouTube’s event lifecycle or the stream’s playback state changed during interruption | Check Live Control Room and the stream dashboard; do not assume the same event or playlist position was preserved. |
| Licensed music is interrupted or replaced | Content ID matched third-party material that was not allowlisted | Contact the rights owner to allowlist the channel and confirm the necessary rights for the music and territories where it will be streamed. |
VPS versus a managed cloud stream
FFmpeg on a VPS gives a technically comfortable operator direct control, but leaves files, encoding, monitoring, and recovery in your hands. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance also lists cloud services such as Gyre and Upstream for continuous streaming; verify their current plans, playlist behavior, platform support, and recovery terms before choosing one. The following option is StreamNeo, a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded-video streams.
