To keep a hotel room tour live overnight, connect a camera or webcam to an encoder, enter the YouTube stream URL and key, verify the preview, and test the complete setup before leaving it unattended. Keep a local recording: YouTube may not archive a stream that runs longer than 12 hours, and it recommends monitoring streams for audio and video quality. No setup can guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast, especially when power or hotel internet conditions are unknown.
Choose how to send the room tour to YouTube
YouTube supports both webcam and encoder-based live streaming. A webcam can be a simpler route when its built-in controls meet your needs. An encoder setup is useful for a fixed room view when you want to connect video and audio hardware and use stream settings such as auto-start or auto-stop. YouTube does not rank encoder brands or establish one as more reliable for overnight use.
You do not need expensive equipment just because the stream is overnight. A camera tripod or webcam may be useful for your particular setup, but neither is a YouTube requirement. The important task is to test the equipment and connection you actually plan to use.
Set up an encoder stream
- Create or select a live stream in YouTube Studio. Use YouTube Studio’s live-stream workflow to create or open the stream you intend to broadcast.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube provides these for an encoder connection. Treat the key as private: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream. Do not publish it or include it in a public screenshot.
- Enter the connection details in your encoder. Use the stream URL and key supplied by YouTube. The encoder’s controls vary, so follow its own instructions for selecting the camera and audio input.
- Review auto-start and auto-stop settings. YouTube offers these options in stream settings. Choose them only if they fit your planned start and end; they do not make a stream immune to a lost connection.
- Start the encoder and check Live Control Room. Wait for YouTube’s preview, then confirm that the picture and audio are correct before starting the public broadcast.
For a webcam-based broadcast, use YouTube’s webcam live-stream workflow instead; the encoder URL-and-key steps apply to encoder streaming.

Test the full overnight setup before relying on it
YouTube’s live-stream tips advise setting up an encoder ahead of time, checking the preview, verifying that the stream is accessible, checking local archive growth, and monitoring audio and video. Run a test using the same camera position, audio sources, encoder settings, network connection, and planned stream controls you intend to use overnight.
- Open the watch page as a viewer and check that the stream is accessible to its intended audience.
- Inspect the image for framing, focus, exposure, and interruptions. Listen for clean audio and unwanted room noise.
- Confirm that a local recording is being created and that its file continues to grow during the test.
- Check that the encoder is still connected and that YouTube’s preview remains healthy before you begin the unattended period.
YouTube advises creators to “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.” That advice is important for an unattended broadcast: YouTube does not document a special overnight mode or promise that a live stream will continue without monitoring. Hotel Wi-Fi and power conditions, as well as camera endurance, depend on the specific room and equipment; YouTube’s guidance does not establish their reliability.

Protect the recording and understand the 12-hour limits
YouTube’s automatic archive
YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream if it is less than 12 hours long. A stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all, so do not treat YouTube’s archive as the only copy of a long overnight tour. Enable a local recording in your capture or encoder setup and verify that the recording is actually being written.

Viewer rewind is a separate feature
DVR controls affect whether viewers can rewind a live stream; they are not the same as saving an archive. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. If rewind matters to viewers, account for this limitation independently of your local recording plan.

Check room audio and content rights
Before going live, check for television, radio, or other background audio in the room. A copyright match involving third-party content can interrupt or terminate a live stream if it remains unresolved. Only stream material for which you have the necessary rights; a hotel room tour does not make background music exempt.
Troubleshoot before leaving the stream unattended
- No preview in Live Control Room: Check that the encoder is running and that its stream URL and key match the stream selected in YouTube Studio. Re-enter the current details if needed, then wait for the preview again.
- Preview appears, but the watch page is not accessible: Check the stream’s audience and availability settings in YouTube Studio, then test the watch page while signed out or from another viewer account.
- Picture or audio is missing or wrong: Confirm the camera and audio inputs selected in the encoder, inspect their connections, and test the preview again before going live.
- Local recording is absent or stops growing: Check the encoder’s recording destination and available local storage, restart a test recording, and verify file growth before depending on it as a backup.
- Stream is interrupted after a content match: Identify and remove or replace the matched third-party material, and resolve the issue through YouTube’s available process before restarting.
- Archive or rewind is unavailable after a long broadcast: These are documented duration limitations, not proof that the local copy failed. Check your local recording separately.
