You can replace the media playlist without deliberately ending your YouTube Live stream: leave OBS connected and sending its encoder feed, and change the media items in an OBS VLC Video source. YouTube receives the live feed through the encoder’s stream key and server URL; the playlist is a separate setting inside OBS. A gap-free picture or audio during the edit is not guaranteed, so check the output before and after you make the change.
What “playlist” means here
This guide is about the list of video files that an encoder plays on your live stream—not a playlist in YouTube Studio. In OBS, a VLC Video source can play a sequence of media files. The encoder sends the resulting audio and video to YouTube using the server URL and stream key configured for the live stream. Keep that encoder connection running while you edit the media list.
YouTube also uses the term “playlist” for the rolling list of video segments in HLS ingest. That is a delivery protocol, not the list of program videos you edit in OBS. HLS has segment-based delivery and higher latency than RTMP; its segment requirements do not configure an OBS media queue. YouTube’s HLS guidance is relevant when choosing an ingest protocol, not when replacing the videos in a VLC Video source.
Choose the right OBS source
For one video that repeats
Use OBS Media Source when the stream needs to play a single file. Its Loop setting repeats that file after playback. OBS documentation lists support for video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Formats and behavior can vary with the installed software and codecs, so check your OBS version if a particular file does not play.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For multiple videos in a sequence
Use VLC Video for a multi-item playlist. VLC must be installed for this source to appear in OBS. The documented defaults are Loop Playlist on and Shuffle Playlist off; VLC Video also has visibility behavior settings that determine whether playback stops, pauses, or continues when the source is not visible. The OBS Media Sources documentation describing these options is dated January 11, 2022, so verify settings in your installed version.
Replace the playlist without stopping the encoder
- Keep the current YouTube live stream and encoder output in place. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, use the existing live stream. The stream key and server URL direct the encoder feed to YouTube; do not reset or replace the stream key for an ordinary media-list edit. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains the connection.
- Open the existing VLC Video source in OBS. In the Sources list, open that source’s properties and edit its playlist items. If the source is not available, install VLC and add a VLC Video source. OBS documents the playlist-capable source and its playback settings in its Media Sources documentation.
- Keep OBS streaming while you make the change. Do not stop the encoder or end the live stream in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s instruction is explicit: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” That does not mean an OBS source edit is guaranteed to be seamless; OBS and YouTube do not promise that changing playlist items live will avoid a brief visual or audio interruption. The current item’s behavior can also depend on how the playlist is edited and the software version.
- Inspect both the encoder output and YouTube preview. Check that the intended video appears and that audio is present. YouTube recommends checking the Live Control Room preview and monitoring stream audio and video quality. Keep monitoring after the change rather than assuming the source is playing correctly.
- Save a local recording when the program matters. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. Do not rely on the YouTube archive as the only copy of a valuable or long-running program.
When RTMP or HLS settings matter
For an ordinary OBS playlist replacement, you are changing media-source content, not the YouTube ingest protocol. YouTube describes HLS as an option for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP. HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency than RTMP. Its documented ingest constraints include 1–4 second MPEG-TS segments, no byte ranges, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption beyond HTTPS. These are protocol-side requirements, not settings for the OBS VLC Video playlist. HLS also disables YouTube’s Ultra low-latency option. See YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance before changing encoder protocol settings.

Troubleshoot a playlist change
- VLC Video is missing in OBS: install VLC, then check the source list again. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source.
- The live stream ended: check whether the encoder output was stopped or disconnected. YouTube says stopping content from the encoder ends the stream. Restore the encoder connection using the existing stream configuration if the live event is still available; avoid changing the key as part of routine playlist editing.
- The new video does not appear: confirm that the intended files are in the VLC Video playlist, then inspect the OBS program output. Check file compatibility and playback settings; if only one file needs repeating, Media Source with Loop may be a better fit.
- There is a brief blank picture or audio interruption: the official documentation does not guarantee gap-free live edits. Verify the source and audio in OBS and the YouTube preview, then allow playback to continue only after confirming the expected output has returned.
- The stream is live but the archive is missing: check its duration. YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured, so retain a local recording for long programs.
