To keep Pokémon gameplay on YouTube Live all day and preserve watchable VODs, stream through a console or encoder in separate sessions shorter than 12 hours, save local recordings, and check each YouTube archive afterward. YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, so one uninterrupted broadcast is a poor choice when complete VODs matter. You can stream live gameplay or play your own recorded gameplay as a loop, but those are different workflows—and neither grants rights to rebroadcast someone else’s footage.

Choose what “all day” means for your channel

Decide first whether viewers will see live play, a sequence of separate broadcasts, or previously recorded gameplay playing continuously. Live play requires a person to play and monitor the session; a loop uses recordings you have the right to use. In either case, if you want reliable YouTube VODs, divide coverage into sessions shorter than 12 hours and retain local recordings as a backup.

  • Live gameplay: Play on a supported console or send the gameplay through a computer encoder. Schedule or start distinct sessions through YouTube Live Control Room.
  • Recorded gameplay: Use your own recordings, or footage for which you have the necessary rights. A continuous playback setup is not the same as being live from a camera or playing in real time.
  • Other creators’ footage or official Pokémon broadcasts: Do not rebroadcast them unless you have the necessary rights and meet the applicable conditions. Pokémon’s online-streaming guidelines cover specified official Pokémon Presents and Play! Pokémon broadcasts, not Pokémon games generally.

YouTube’s general streaming guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the past 90 days. Its getting-started guidance says streamers must be at least 16. Check eligibility in YouTube Studio before building your schedule. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.

Choose a console-native stream or an encoder

Stream directly from a supported console

YouTube supports direct streaming from some modern consoles. This is usually the simpler route if the console and game support the features you need. Exact steps depend on the console maker, so follow its current instructions and confirm that the broadcast appears in YouTube Live Control Room.

Send gameplay through a computer encoder

An encoder is commonly used for gameplay and gives you a production workflow on a computer. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key into your encoder, then start the encoder feed. A capture card is needed only if your particular console-to-computer setup requires one; YouTube does not require a capture card for every gameplay stream. The encoder setup is documented in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

  1. Check channel eligibility and choose the console-native or encoder route.
  2. Create or schedule the broadcast: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and set up the stream. Choose the visibility and schedule appropriate for your test or broadcast.
  3. Connect the encoder if using one: Enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password; anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Reset it if you think it has been exposed. See Manage live stream settings.
  4. Wait for the preview: Start the encoder feed and confirm YouTube receives it in Live Control Room before you go live.
  5. Start the broadcast from the appropriate control in Live Control Room or the console workflow, then check the public or unlisted watch page from a separate device.

Test the setup before scheduling long coverage

A long stream needs monitoring, not just a successful start. YouTube recommends testing in advance, checking that the stream is accessible, watching audio and video quality, and confirming that a local recording is growing. Run a private or unlisted test before announcing a schedule.

  • If recording locally, confirm the file is being written and has available storage.
  • Check that your internet connection can sustain the encoder’s upload without disrupting other household or office traffic.

YouTube’s live streaming tips provide further setup and monitoring guidance. Specific bitrate, resolution, and keyframe values depend on the encoder, source, and current YouTube requirements; use the current settings guidance for your chosen workflow rather than assuming one configuration fits every console and game.

Plan sessions around YouTube’s VOD limit

YouTube can automatically archive streams under 12 hours. For streams longer than 12 hours, YouTube warns that they may not be captured at all. That is a risk to the entire archive, not just the portion beyond the threshold. For all-day coverage, end a session before it approaches 12 hours, start a new broadcast, and check that each archive is available afterward. Keep your own local recording as a backup. See Archive live streams.

  3. After each session, verify that the archive is available and watchable; do not assume the platform archive is your only copy.
  4. Keep local recordings until you have confirmed the corresponding VODs and have any additional backup you need.

YouTube’s DVR and auto-start or auto-stop settings can affect how a stream behaves, but they do not remove the archive warning. Review YouTube’s live stream settings when configuring those options.

Check Pokémon footage, game audio, and monetization rights

There is no blanket Pokémon gameplay permission established here for every game. The exact title matters: check its current publisher guidance before assuming that streaming, archiving, or monetizing gameplay is permitted. YouTube says game monetization depends on commercial-use rights granted by the publisher. It also cautions that extended gameplay without appropriate rights may not be accepted for monetization; instructional or educational commentary tied to the action can matter, but commentary is not a substitute for rights. See YouTube’s video game and software content guidance.

Be especially careful with music. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches and may interrupt or terminate a stream if matched content remains. A Content ID claim can also be applied to an archived stream after it ends. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the creator to have the necessary rights for live and archived content, including music licensing. Pokémon’s Pokémon Content Guidelines for Online Streaming Platforms, last updated January 31, 2024, address co-streaming specified Pokémon Presents and Play! Pokémon broadcasts. They do not establish a rule for all Pokémon games. For the covered broadcasts, the guidelines require added live commentary and/or video for a co-stream rather than simply restreaming the broadcast; they also warn that copyrighted music in Play! Pokémon broadcasts must be removed or muted from VODs. A separate Pokémon UNITE game-content policy, last updated August 19, 2021, permits individual gameplay content to be monetized through official platform methods, including YouTube, but applies only to Pokémon UNITE. Do not extend either policy beyond its stated scope.

Troubleshoot common all-day streaming problems

YouTube does not receive the encoder feed

  • Confirm the encoder is using the stream URL and key for the intended YouTube broadcast.
  • Check the encoder’s connection status and YouTube Live Control Room for the incoming preview.
  • If the key may have been exposed or reused incorrectly, reset it in YouTube settings and update the encoder.

The stream is live but the VOD is missing or incomplete

  • Check the stream duration. A session over 12 hours may not be captured at all.
  • Look in YouTube Studio for the archive after the broadcast ends, then verify its playback rather than assuming it is complete.
  • Use the local recording as your backup and shorten future sessions.

The broadcast is interrupted or terminated

  • Check YouTube’s copyright notifications and identify whether game audio, music, or other third-party material triggered a match.
  • Remove or replace material you do not have rights to use. If you have a license for third-party content, YouTube says the rights-holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist.
  • For a continuing live match, act promptly; YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream.

Audio, video, or access is unreliable

  • Check stream health, audio levels, and the watch page from a separate device.
  • Run a test broadcast and monitor the local recording for file growth and quality.
  • Check available upload capacity and reduce competing network use if the connection cannot sustain the feed.

Or let it run in the cloud
