When permission to use a video or something inside it expires, stop using the affected material unless the rights holder renews or extends permission. A YouTube upload, an always-on schedule, and the absence of a Content ID claim do not extend a license. Before the deadline, secure written renewal or prepare a cleared replacement; if the term ends without renewal, remove the work from the stream and any other use not covered by your rights.
What to do when a video license expires
Base your decision on the permission agreement, not on YouTube’s claim status. A video may contain separately licensed music, footage, images, or performances, each with its own rights holder and terms. Check the agreement for the permitted use, platform, territory, monetization, term, and any conditions for keeping an existing upload available.
YouTube explains platform copyright procedures, but its tools do not replace a license or determine ownership. YouTube says, “YouTube doesn’t decide copyright ownership or mediate ownership disputes.” Read YouTube’s copyright tips.
Build a rights register for every stream video
Record the rights for the video as a whole and for each embedded work. YouTube’s rights-management system distinguishes assets, ownership information, references, and policies; those concepts help explain why one video may involve multiple permissions. See YouTube’s overview of rights management.

- Identify the material: title, file or playlist location, and any music, footage, images, or performances it contains.
- Record permission evidence: the agreement or other documentation, rights holder, allowed platforms and formats, territories, monetization conditions, and whether livestreaming and archives are covered.
- Track the term: start and end dates, renewal procedure, and what the agreement says about already-published videos after expiry.
- Assign responsibility: name the person who will request renewal, approve a substitute, and change the stream schedule.
- Set reminders: allow enough time to obtain a renewal or prepare a replacement. There is no YouTube-mandated lead time in the cited guidance; choose one that fits the agreement and the time needed to make the change.
Arrange renewal or replacement before expiry
- Review the actual permission. Confirm which works it covers and the uses it permits. Do not assume one video-level license covers every embedded work.
- Ask for written renewal or replacement rights. Specify the planned use, including continuous or live playback, territories, monetization, and archive availability where relevant.
- Check the replacement’s scope. Compare platforms and formats, term and renewal rights, territories, monetization or revenue-sharing conditions, coverage of both composition and sound recording where music is involved, and what happens to published videos after expiry. The agreement controls.
- Queue a cleared substitute. If permission is not renewed by the end date, remove the affected video or segment from the always-on schedule and use material whose rights cover the intended use.
Do not treat an old upload, an existing Content ID status, or the absence of a claim as an extension. A missing claim is not evidence that permission remains valid.
How to handle a Content ID claim in YouTube Studio
A Content ID claim is distinct from a copyright removal request. A claim can affect where a video is viewable or whether it can be monetized. If the claimed material is no longer permitted and the claim identifies the relevant content, YouTube documents three editing options: trim the claimed segment, replace a claimed song with a YouTube Audio Library track, or erase or mute the claimed sound. Use an option only if it also addresses your rights obligation; a platform edit does not itself renew permission.

- In YouTube Studio, open the video’s copyright details and identify the matched material and claim restrictions.
- Choose the applicable edit: trim out the segment, replace the song, or erase/mute the claimed audio.
- Preview the change and save it only when you are satisfied with the edit.
- Wait for processing, reload the page, and confirm both the processed video and the claim status. The claim may remain if any claimed material remains.
YouTube’s instructions say that as of June 2025, saved Studio Editor changes cannot be undone with “Revert to original.” Download a copy or use Google Takeout before editing if you need to preserve the unedited master. YouTube also says non-YouTube Partner Program channels may be unable to save Studio edits on videos with over 100,000 views. Check YouTube’s current instructions for removing claimed content.
What if a removal request arrives?
A scheduled copyright removal request is not the same process as a Content ID claim. YouTube says a scheduled request allows seven days for action such as deleting the material or seeking retraction. If a valid request takes effect, YouTube removes the video and applies a copyright strike. Follow the notice and YouTube’s process rather than relying on the claim-edit workflow. If ownership, a copyright exception, or a counter-notification is disputed, seek qualified legal advice.

YouTube reported receiving removal requests for over 16 million videos in 2022. That figure counts videos subject to removal requests; it is not a count of expiring licenses or always-on channels. Read YouTube’s explanation of copyright removal requests.
Creator Music licenses: check the specific term
YouTube Help states that paid Creator Music licenses were deprecated on August 10, 2026. Existing paid and gratis licenses remain in effect until the end of their terms, with no renewal under the existing terms; YouTube says the product is moving to gratis licenses. Its guidance describes Creator Music as available to U.S. YouTube Partner Program creators, with expansion outside the U.S. pending. Rights compliance and stream continuity are separate problems: the schedule should switch away from expired material, while the replacement must itself be cleared for the intended use. Copyright and reused-content checks for replacements
Before adding a substitute to an always-on playlist, confirm that you have permission for the actual use and keep evidence of it. A Content ID claim or its absence does not settle whether the material is licensed. Copyright exceptions such as fair use depend on the circumstances; YouTube says Content ID cannot make that legal determination. Read YouTube’s fair use guidance. A rights register can help you document permissions, but it does not guarantee YouTube monetization or resolve a legal dispute.

Troubleshooting common expiry problems
- The video has no Content ID claim, but the license expired. Remove the affected material from uses no longer covered by permission, or secure renewal. Claim status is not a license extension.
- A claim remains after editing. Check whether any claimed material remains, wait for processing, reload Studio, and verify the result. YouTube says an edit clears the claim only if the claimed content is fully removed or replaced.
- You want to undo a saved Studio edit. YouTube says saved changes cannot be undone through “Revert to original” as of June 2025. Restore from a source copy if you preserved one.
- You cannot save an edit. YouTube says non-Partner Program channels may be unable to save Studio edits on videos with over 100,000 views. Use a suitable source copy and editing workflow, and verify the resulting video and claim status.
- You received a scheduled removal notice. Read the notice and act within its stated process; YouTube describes a seven-day period for scheduled removals. Do not confuse it with a Content ID claim.
- A license covers a YouTube upload but not clearly a continuous stream or archive. Ask the rights holder for written clarification or expanded permission before using the material in that way.
