To keep a VLC-based YouTube stream running through a power cut, battery-back up every device it depends on: the device running VLC and the modem, router, or other network equipment carrying its internet connection. If the display is needed, include that too. Size the UPS or inverter for the combined load and the runtime you need. This protects local equipment, but it cannot keep the stream online if your internet service fails during the outage.
What needs backup power
Make a list of the equipment that must stay on for your particular setup:
- VLC playback device: the computer or other device playing the stream.
- Network equipment: the modem, router, or other terminal equipment your connection requires. If these lose power, the powered computer may still have no internet access.
- Display: include it if you need it to operate or monitor the setup. A display may not be necessary for playback to continue once everything is configured, depending on the device and setup.
Connect each required device to an outlet marked for battery backup. Some units have separate surge-protection-only outlets; those do not provide battery power. Check the labels and instructions for the exact unit.
How to size a UPS or inverter
- Find the load. Read the rated wattage for each device, or measure its actual consumption if you have an appropriate meter. Add the wattages of the devices you intend to back up. Eaton recommends using device wattage when determining the supported UPS load; see its UPS buying guide.
- Check both output limits. Compare the combined load with the backup unit’s watt and VA ratings. Do not exceed either limit. Watts and VA are related but distinct ratings; APC explains their relationship through power factor in its UPS buying guide.
- Check runtime at your load. Use the exact model’s runtime chart or load-specific estimate for the combined equipment. A VA figure alone does not tell you how long the system will run. APC notes that runtime falls as more equipment is connected.
- Check the connections and battery arrangement. Confirm that the unit has suitable battery-backed outlets for your devices, and verify the supported battery type, included capacity, and any expansion limits in the model documentation. Outlet types and electrical standards vary by product and market.
- Test the complete setup. With the equipment connected as intended, simulate loss of mains power according to the backup unit’s instructions. Confirm that VLC playback and the network equipment remain on, and observe how long the arrangement lasts. This practical check is more useful than assuming a runtime from the unit’s headline rating.
Eaton says its desktop UPS systems are designed to remain plugged in so their batteries stay charged and the units are ready for an outage. That guidance applies to those Eaton desktop UPS systems; follow the instructions for your specific UPS or inverter.

What an inverter cannot solve
Battery backup preserves power to equipment on your side of the connection. It does not guarantee that your ISP, local access network, or upstream infrastructure will remain available. Check with your provider or test your own connection during a suitable outage simulation; a router that stays powered is not proof that internet service will continue.
The outage duration also matters. Choose a unit whose documented runtime at your actual load covers the interruption you need to bridge. If an outage lasts longer than its battery runtime, the equipment will eventually lose power unless the system has a supported way to extend or restore power.

Open a network stream in VLC
VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 desktop documentation describes the general network-media workflow: open Media > Open Network Stream, enter a network URL, and click Play. See VLC’s network-streaming documentation.

This is a general network-stream procedure, not confirmation that a YouTube page URL works in every current VLC version or on every platform. First verify playback with the URL, VLC version, and operating system you actually use. Then test that playback on your battery-backed arrangement before relying on it. Keeping the computer powered does not by itself establish that VLC can play a particular YouTube URL or that the stream will remain available.

Troubleshoot a stream that stops during a power cut
- VLC or the computer shuts down immediately: check that the playback device is connected to a battery-backed outlet, not a surge-only outlet. Confirm the combined load is within both the watt and VA limits.
- The computer stays on, but VLC loses the stream: check whether the modem, router, or other required network equipment also has battery power. If it does, the internet service may still have failed upstream; local backup cannot restore an unavailable connection.
- The system runs for less time than expected: check the unit’s runtime estimate for the actual load and confirm which devices are connected. More connected equipment reduces available runtime.
- VLC does not open the YouTube URL: verify the URL and test it with the VLC version and platform installed. The cited VLC documentation covers network streams generally and does not establish compatibility with every YouTube page URL.
- The setup works on mains power but fails in a real outage: repeat a controlled test of the whole chain, including the playback device, network equipment, battery-backed outlets, and internet availability. A successful power test alone does not test whether the ISP connection survives an outage.
