To keep a Raspberry Pi from overheating during continuous FFmpeg streaming, measure its temperature while the full stream is running, improve heatsink contact and airflow if it throttles, and reduce encoding workload where possible. Raspberry Pi progressively throttles Arm cores between 80°C and 85°C; at 85°C, the Arm cores and GPU are throttled. The right fix depends on your Pi model, encoding path, case, and actual workload—not a universal temperature target or cooler.

Why FFmpeg streaming can overheat a Raspberry Pi

Video processing can keep a Raspberry Pi under sustained compute load, unlike an idle-temperature check or a short test. When the core temperature reaches 80°C, Raspberry Pi begins progressively throttling Arm cores; at 85°C, the Arm cores and GPU are throttled to control temperature. That can reduce sustained performance and may affect an encoding pipeline that already uses most of the available processing capacity. Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation describes these thermal-control thresholds.

Temperature alone does not establish that the stream is stable. Board generation, codec, resolution, frame rate, filters, encoder settings, enclosure, airflow, and ambient temperature all affect heat and processing demand. There is no documented universal temperature drop for adding a particular cooler to a generic 24/7 FFmpeg setup. Check both temperature and throttling under the workload you intend to run.

Measure temperature and throttling during the real stream

Read the temperature

Start the exact FFmpeg command you plan to run, including its usual input, output, resolution, frame rate, filters, and encoder settings. Then read the temperature while that process is running. Raspberry Pi documents two options:

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • vcgencmd measure_temp reports the current temperature in a human-readable form.
  • cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp reports a value in thousandths of a degree Celsius. Divide the result by 1,000; for example, 65000 represents 65°C.

These commands give readings, not a guarantee of long-term stability. Observe the stream long enough for the board to reach its usual sustained behavior, and repeat the check in the actual case and room conditions. A brief run or idle reading may miss throttling that appears after extended encoding.

Check for throttling as well as heat

Compare the observed temperature with Raspberry Pi’s 80–85°C progressive-throttling interval and 85°C threshold. If performance degrades or throttling indicators appear during the normal stream, record the reading and workload details before changing one thing at a time. Raspberry Pi’s cooling guidance advises considering additional cooling when throttling occurs during the usual workload; it does not say every board needs a fan. See Raspberry Pi’s cooling paper.

Improve cooling without guessing at a temperature result

Start with unobstructed airflow

Make sure the case vents are not blocked and the board has room for air to move around it. A heatsink helps transfer heat away from a hot component; airflow over the heatsink improves cooling efficiency. Raspberry Pi notes that a heatsink or small fan can reduce thermal throttling, particularly inside a case. Fit and compatibility matter: check that a heatsink or fan assembly suits your board and enclosure before installing it.

Add active cooling when passive cooling is not enough

If an adequately fitted heatsink and open airflow do not prevent throttling during the actual stream, consider a compatible fan or a case designed for airflow. Active cooling adds a moving part and may add noise; case fit, fan control, and maintenance are practical trade-offs. Raspberry Pi 5 has model-specific options including its Active Cooler and temperature-controlled fan configurations. Do not assume those parts fit or are appropriate for other Pi generations.

Verify the change under the same conditions

After changing the heatsink, fan, or case, repeat the same stream and temperature checks. Compare behavior under the same workload and similar ambient conditions. If throttling stops, the cooling change addressed the observed thermal constraint; if it continues, inspect both the cooling setup and the encoding workload. Published official guidance does not provide a guaranteed temperature reduction for a particular accessory in every FFmpeg setup.

Reduce FFmpeg workload if cooling alone does not solve it

A cooler cannot make an unsuitable encoding workload fit the board’s processing capacity. Review the input and output codecs, resolution, frame rate, scaling and other filters, and software encoder settings. Test changes against the output quality and latency you actually need.

The encoding route depends on the Pi generation and software stack. Raspberry Pi’s camera software documentation says “Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders” and that “libav uses hardware H.264 video encoding when present.” Its published comparison documents a Pi 4 H.264 hardware-encoding path using h264_v4l2m2m and Pi 5 software libx264 configurations. Do not assume a hardware encoder is available just because another Pi model or software configuration supports one; check the relevant camera software documentation and H.264 performance comparison.

Raspberry Pi’s processor documentation gives an approximate 30–40% CPU figure for H.264 1080p30 encoding from the ISP. That figure applies to that specific encoding context; it is not a forecast for arbitrary FFmpeg filters, software encoding, or a whole streaming pipeline. Encoder parameters can change CPU use, quality, and latency, so validate the settings and temperature with your own command. See Raspberry Pi’s processor documentation.

Troubleshoot common thermal problems

  • The Pi is cool at idle but throttles during streaming: idle readings do not represent sustained video processing. Measure with the full FFmpeg command running, then improve airflow or reduce workload based on the result.
  • The temperature approaches 80°C or exceeds it: Raspberry Pi’s progressive Arm-core throttling begins in the 80–85°C interval. Check whether the heatsink is properly coupled to the intended component, clear obstructed vents, and test suitable airflow or active cooling.
  • A fan or heatsink seems to make no difference: verify board and case compatibility, installation, and airflow across the heatsink. Then repeat the test under the same stream conditions rather than relying on a different workload or ambient temperature.
  • Cooling is improved but encoding still struggles: high CPU demand, unsupported hardware encoding, filters, resolution, or frame rate may be the limiting factor. Confirm the encoder path for your model and adjust workload settings incrementally.
  • Temperature readings are inconsistent: use one documented method consistently and note whether readings are taken during the same stream and after sustained operation. A temperature reading alone does not identify the cause of performance trouble.
