YouTube does not document a setting that guarantees a livestream archive longer than 12 hours. It says a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all—but that is an archive warning, not a confirmed rule that the livestream itself will stop at the 12-hour mark. If you need the show to continue live, record a separate local copy and monitor it. If you need YouTube to save an archive, plan the stream to stay under 12 hours. YouTube Help guidance checked October 3, 2026.

Does YouTube end a podcast livestream at 12 hours?

Not according to the guidance covered here. YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; it does not say that every stream is forcibly ended exactly at 12 hours. Keep two outcomes separate: whether the live broadcast continues and whether YouTube saves a replay afterward. The archive warning concerns the second. YouTube’s archive guidance does not document a setting that guarantees capture beyond 12 hours.

Changing encoders or buying additional storage is not documented as a way around that archive caveat. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain how to send a feed and end a stream, but do not identify an encoder control that guarantees a longer archive. Review YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Choose the right plan for your podcast

If the YouTube replay matters

Keep the broadcast below 12 hours. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but does not promise capture for a longer stream. Build in a margin rather than scheduling to finish right at the threshold. YouTube’s archive page.

If uninterrupted live programming matters

Run a separate local recording alongside the live broadcast and check that it is actually being written. A local file gives you another copy; it does not keep the YouTube stream live or change YouTube’s archive behavior. YouTube recommends a local archive backup, and its live-streaming tips advise checking archive integrity and confirming that the file size is growing. YouTube live-streaming tips.

If you are considering multiple segments

Splitting a long show into separate streams may help keep each planned archive below 12 hours, but weigh that against the audience experience: a new watch page, chat, notifications, or a handoff may affect continuity. The official pages cited here do not document a seamless handoff or establish how those audience features behave during one. Do not assume a split guarantees continuity.

Set up a long broadcast with a local backup

  1. Decide what must be preserved. Write down whether your priority is a continuous live watch page, a complete recording, a YouTube replay, or some combination. The 12-hour guidance is about archive capture risk, not a confirmed stream cutoff.
  2. Plan archive-friendly timing. If you need a YouTube replay, schedule the broadcast to finish under 12 hours. For a longer live event, plan a separate local recording rather than relying on YouTube’s automatic archive.
  3. Configure and verify local recording. Use your encoder’s local-recording option or another recording workflow. Start it before the show, then confirm the output file exists and is growing. YouTube does not specify a universal recording format, storage capacity, or drive model in the cited guidance.
  4. Connect the encoder to YouTube. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions to use the stream URL and key, then check the YouTube preview before the podcast begins. Stop sending content from the encoder when you intend to end the broadcast; an encoder setting is not a documented solution to the archive caveat.
  5. Check the upload connection and backup plan. YouTube recommends leaving bandwidth headroom beyond the total streaming bitrate, continuously monitoring stream quality, and testing failover ahead of time. Its streaming tips specify 20% upload bandwidth headroom. This is network-planning advice, not a way to change the 12-hour archive behavior. YouTube streaming tips.
  6. Monitor both outputs during the show. Check the live stream’s health and the local recording independently. If the YouTube connection drops, a local recording does not restore it; if local recording stops, the live feed may still be running, but your backup is at risk.

Do not confuse DVR with an archive

DVR is a viewer feature that lets people rewind a live stream; it is not the saved replay. YouTube says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours for very long streams. Turning DVR off does not guarantee that YouTube will capture the archive. See YouTube’s DVR guidance and its separate archive guidance.

Troubleshoot the 12-hour problem

  • The livestream is still live, but there is no replay: This is consistent with YouTube’s warning that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Check your local recording; for future broadcasts where a YouTube archive is essential, keep the stream under 12 hours.
  • The local recording is missing or incomplete: Check that local recording was enabled and started, that the destination was writable, and that the output file grew during the show. YouTube’s guidance recommends checking local archive integrity and file growth; it does not identify a single universal cause for a failed local file.
  • The stream disconnects or quality degrades: Check available outbound bandwidth against the total streaming bitrate, monitor stream quality, and test your encoder failover before the next event. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom, but that recommendation does not affect archive capture beyond 12 hours.
  • You are changing DVR or encoder settings to save the replay: These address different issues. DVR concerns viewer rewind, while the encoder documentation does not provide a documented control guaranteeing capture of a stream over 12 hours.
