To keep a podcast stream running through a power cut, protect both sides of the chain: the encoder and production equipment need backup power, and the internet connection needs to remain available with enough upload capacity. A UPS or inverter can address mains power loss, but it cannot guarantee that your ISP’s network will keep working.
What has to stay powered?
Start by listing the equipment whose operation is essential for your stream. A desktop setup commonly includes the streaming PC, audio interface or mixer, any powered microphones, camera, and a display if you need it to operate the stream. Include the modem or optical network terminal (ONT) and router if you expect the internet connection to stay up during an outage.
- Mark which devices must remain on for the broadcast to continue and which can safely switch off.
- Check each device’s label or manufacturer documentation for its power requirements.
- Consider the combined load and how long you want the equipment to run; there is no universal UPS capacity or runtime that fits every podcast setup.
YouTube says a laptop and webcam can be used to stream and recommends testing the setup before an event. A laptop’s battery may reduce the backup power needed for the computer, but it does not automatically keep external audio, video, display, modem, ONT, or router equipment powered.
Choose backup power for your actual setup
Desktop computer and production gear
A computer UPS or inverter backup can supply power to the encoder and the production devices you have identified as essential. Choose based on the real combined load and the outage duration you need to cover, using current product documentation and runtime information. Do not assume that a particular capacity will run an unspecified studio for a fixed time.

Laptop-based setup
The laptop’s internal battery can keep the encoder running during a mains interruption, provided the battery has sufficient charge and remains healthy. Separately account for the equipment that is not running on that battery—especially powered audio gear and broadband devices.
Modem, ONT, and router
A separate UPS designed for networking equipment is another option for keeping a modem and router powered. An India-focused APC reseller discusses this category, but runtime depends on the specific devices, UPS, and battery condition; backup power does not establish that the ISP’s network is available.

A Government of India court-streaming procurement corrigendum from 2024 specifies a 2 kVA / 1800 W UPS with 30-minute backup for its institutional solution. That is an example of a government procurement requirement, not a home-studio sizing recommendation.

YouTube Help warns: “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” Check the actual upload throughput at the streaming location and compare it with the total bitrate configured for the stream. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; that is spare capacity guidance, not a bitrate requirement for a particular resolution or encoder setting.

- Measure upload throughput at the location and, if possible, at the time of day you plan to broadcast.
- Compare the result with the stream’s configured total bitrate, leaving the recommended headroom rather than treating the full measured upload rate as available to the stream.
- Ask your ISP whether its local equipment is expected to remain available during a mains outage.
- If you are considering mobile data or a second broadband connection as a fallback, check coverage and test the alternative under stream load before relying on it. Availability varies by location and provider.
The National Informatics Centre’s 2–4 Mbps per-stream figure applies to an agency-provided feed submitted to its government webcast service. It is not a general YouTube bitrate recommendation for creators.
Rehearse the outage and recovery plan
YouTube Help advises: “Make sure that you thoroughly test your setup before your event.” Set up your encoder in advance, preview the stream in YouTube Live Control Room, confirm it is accessible on the watch page, and monitor both audio and video.

- Run the complete production chain under the expected load, including the computer, audio and video devices, networking equipment, and backup power.
- Confirm that the preview and stream are accessible in Live Control Room and on the watch page, and listen and watch for audio or video problems.
- If using a backup encoder, test failover before the event. YouTube’s guidance describes stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup encoder.
- Record what failed, how long the backup lasted, and what needs attention; correct the setup and rehearse again.
A backup encoder addresses encoder failure. It does not by itself solve a mains outage or loss of the internet path; those need their own tested measures.
Electrical safety in India
For applicable safety information, consult the Central Electricity Authority’s Measures Relating to Safety and Electric Supply Regulations 2023 and current advisories. For a permanently wired inverter or UPS installation, use qualified local electrical support rather than attempting fixed-wiring work from general streaming advice.
