You can upload a recorded podcast episode while your YouTube livestream continues: keep the encoder sending the live feed, and upload the episode as a separate task. The main risk is that both activities use your internet connection’s upload bandwidth. If the connection cannot handle both steadily, pause or defer the episode upload rather than risk an unstable stream.

Why an episode upload can affect a live stream

Your encoder sends the live feed to YouTube using the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. Uploading a finished episode is a separate task, but it may compete with the live feed for outbound bandwidth on your connection. YouTube says the total streaming bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Other people or devices using the connection can reduce what is available to the stream. YouTube Help: Streaming tips

That means a fast internet plan alone does not guarantee a stable stream during a large file upload. Actual continuity depends on your encoder, connection, available upload capacity, and other network use. YouTube does not promise that a Studio episode upload can run concurrently without affecting a livestream. Treat uploading during the show as something to test on your own connection.

Prepare the stream and upload before the show

  1. Configure the encoder in Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and configure the stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder as directed by YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. Keep the key private; anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
  2. Measure upload capacity. Run an upload-speed test under conditions similar to the broadcast. Compare the planned stream bitrate with the actual outbound capacity, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. A shared or busy network may deliver less capacity to the encoder than the plan’s headline speed suggests. YouTube’s streaming tips
  3. Choose a bitrate appropriate to the show. YouTube’s encoder settings table recommends, for H.264, 10 Mbps at 1080p/30fps and 17 Mbps at 1080p/60fps. These are ingestion recommendations for the live video, not the total internet capacity required when other uploads are running. Leave additional bandwidth for the episode upload and headroom. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before configuring your encoder.
  4. Test the combined workload. Before the broadcast, test with audio and movement similar to the actual show. Start a representative episode upload if you intend to upload during the live program. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, monitor the encoder, and confirm that any local recording is being saved. Upload size and network conditions vary, so a test is more useful than assuming the two tasks will coexist smoothly.

Keep the livestream going while the episode uploads

  1. Start the broadcast and confirm that the encoder is sending content and the Live Control Room preview is healthy.
  2. Begin the finished episode’s upload as a separate YouTube publishing task. Do not stop the encoder or end the live event to start the file upload.
  3. Watch the Live Control Room’s stream-health indicators and the encoder while the upload runs. If the connection becomes unstable, reduce competing network activity first. Pausing or slowing the episode upload is a practical response to bandwidth pressure, not a YouTube guarantee or a specified platform throttle setting.
  4. Once the episode upload is complete, finish its publishing details separately. Keep monitoring the live feed until you are ready to end the show.

If the stream becomes unstable

  • Health warnings appear when the episode upload starts: Pause the upload or let it finish after the broadcast. This reduces competition for upload capacity.
  • The stream remains unstable after pausing: Check whether other devices or people are using the connection, and check the encoder’s connection and settings. Re-test the available upload capacity before relying on the same arrangement next time.
  • The stream is stable without the episode upload: Your setup may not have enough dependable capacity for both tasks at once. Defer the upload, use a less demanding stream configuration supported by YouTube’s current settings guidance, or arrange a more reliable connection.
  • You need the episode uploaded during the show: Rehearse the entire workflow, including the upload, on the same network and with similar stream settings. YouTube’s guidance does not establish a universal upload speed or throttle value for concurrent Studio uploads.

End the stream and protect the recording

When the show is over, end the stream deliberately using the applicable encoder or Live Control Room steps. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup, so confirm that your local recording is intact and verify the resulting YouTube archive and its visibility in Studio.
