Then set up a Time Machine destination and verify that backups are completing and needed files can be restored. The exact startup and recovery steps for server software depend on that app.
1. Give the Mac mini a dependable network identity
Before setting up remote access, know the Mac mini’s IP address and use a strong login password. Apple suggests using DHCP with a manual address so the IP does not change over time. The exact configuration depends on your router and macOS network settings; consult the instructions for your network equipment if you are unsure how to reserve an address.
A consistent address makes it easier to reconnect to the Mac and to reach shared folders. It does not, by itself, make the Mac accessible from outside your local network.
2. Keep the server awake and allow the connections it needs
Prevent sleep
Configure the Mac mini not to sleep when server tasks need to run continuously. Apple warns that sleep can interrupt running tasks and processes. Find the sleep or display-related power settings available in your macOS version and set them for the Mac’s server role.

Check the firewall
Turn on the macOS firewall, then check its incoming-connection rules if the server or remote-management tool cannot be reached. A firewall helps protect the Mac, but a rule can also block a service that needs to accept connections. Allow only the software and connections your setup requires; do not disable the firewall as a troubleshooting shortcut.
Choose how to handle updates
Apple describes automatic updates as optional. They can apply security updates, while owners who need to control when changes occur may prefer to manage updates manually. Do not assume updates are risk-free or that the Mac will remain available while an update installs or the computer restarts.

3. Prepare for power loss and restarts
Configure the Mac mini to start when power returns after an outage. Apple’s Mac mini server setup guide says, “If your Mac mini ever loses power, set it up to restart automatically.” This brings the computer back after power is restored; it does not ensure that every server application launches by itself.
Check the documentation for each server app and configure its own automatic-start behavior if available. Also consider what you will do if macOS or an update restarts the Mac and an app does not reopen. The application’s own instructions determine how to launch or recover it.

4. Choose and test remote administration before going headless
Set up at least one administration method and test it from the computer you will use before disconnecting the display. Apple lists the server app’s own tools, Remote Login (SSH), and Screen Sharing as options.

Do not confuse managing the Mac with sharing files from it. Remote Login or Screen Sharing provides administration access; File Sharing exposes selected folders to other computers. To connect to a Mac mini’s shared resources from another Mac, Apple’s guide gives the Finder path Go > Connect to Server, where you can enter the Mac mini’s IP address.

Apple’s cited Screen Sharing guidance is for another Mac on the same network. It is not an endorsement of exposing management services directly to the public internet. If you need access from elsewhere, choose a secure method suited to your network and software, and verify its access controls before relying on it.

Apple documents two destination types relevant to this setup: an external storage device and a shared folder hosted by another Mac on the network. A Mac mini can also host a shared folder configured as a Time Machine destination for other Macs.

Apple’s instructions establish these destination options, but do not compare their speed, durability, or suitability for a specific workload. Choose capacity based on your data and retention needs; no single capacity fits every server or household.
- Set up the external storage or shared folder using Apple’s Time Machine destination instructions: Backup disks you can use with Time Machine.
- Confirm in Time Machine that the intended destination is selected and that recent backups appear. Merely attaching a drive or creating a shared folder does not show that a backup completed.
- Restore a representative file or folder using the recovery method you expect to use. A backup you have not checked may not meet your recovery needs.
