How do I keep my LEGO display from getting dusty?
Use a transparent case or cabinet that fully encloses the diorama. LEGO describes its Play and Display Case – Blue as designed to keep models free from dust and damage. The cited US listing describes a relatively small case, with dimensions over 19 cm high, 39 cm wide, and 14 cm deep; those are outside dimensions, so check usable interior space rather than assuming a particular build will fit. Availability and price vary by region and can change.
Before buying any case, measure the model and check:
- Fit: Interior height, width, and depth, including room for trees, towers, or other protruding scenery.
- Closure: Whether the cover encloses the display, rather than leaving open gaps where dust can enter.
- Access: Whether you can place the diorama inside without snagging scenery or taking it apart.
- Stability: Whether the base can support the build without pushing it against the cover.
A larger clear cabinet is an option for a bigger build; assess its dimensions and closure against your model rather than assuming any case is compatible. Keep the display away from direct sunlight and heat sources. LEGO advises storing bricks in a dry place away from heat and sunlight, which can make them brittle or discolored over time (LEGO storage guidance).

How do you dust LEGO without knocking pieces off?
- Choose a stable, well-lit work area. Set the model on a steady surface and support its base so you are not holding or flexing fragile sections while cleaning.
- Use a clean, very soft, dry artist’s brush. Brush lightly, moving dust away from details. Work only over areas that feel stable; do not push into small parts or brush across anything that shifts.
- Stop if the build moves or appears damaged. If pieces are loose, cracked, or decorated with sensitive decals or applied details, do not continue brushing that area.
This is a cautious application of conservation guidance for plastics and delicate objects, not a LEGO-issued procedure for assembled dioramas. The Canadian Conservation Institute says careful dry brushing or vacuum cleaning is the preferred approach for plastics and describes removing dust with clean air or vacuuming assisted by a sable-hair brush (Caring for plastics and rubbers).
Why start dry instead of wiping?
A cloth can drag loose particles across a surface, so do not use it as the first move on dusty bricks or scenery. Avoid forceful compressed air around loose pieces or fine scenery: the National Park Service warns that forced air can blow loose or fragile objects off. Its dusting guidance recommends a soft artist’s brush with a vacuum attachment for delicate surfaces, but that is a conservation technique for particular objects, not a requirement for every home LEGO display (NPS Conserve O Gram on dusting).

When is a vacuum appropriate?
For stubborn dust in crevices on a stable build, a vacuum on low suction may help if you use a soft brush to guide dust toward the nozzle. Keep the nozzle above and off the model, and do not vacuum near unsupported parts. The Library of Congress describes low suction for delicate objects and recommends a protective screen when vacuuming fragile material (Collection Emergencies – FAQ). These safeguards are for situations where vacuuming is useful; for an ordinary display, a soft dry brush is the simpler starting point.
Can you clean a LEGO set without taking it apart?
For loose dust, gentle dry brushing can be done without disassembling a stable model. Washing is different. LEGO’s official advice is to clean LEGO pieces by hand using water no hotter than 104°F / 40°C and a soft cloth or sponge. It warns against machine washing and against drying pieces in an oven, microwave, or hair dryer because higher temperatures may affect brick quality (LEGO cleaning guidance). That advice concerns pieces; it is not a recommendation to wet-wipe or wash every assembled diorama.

Do not spray or submerge an assembled build. Moisture may reach inaccessible joints or sensitive decorations, stickers, and electronics. LEGO separately says electronic or other sensitive pieces containing metal should be cleaned with a cloth moistened with water and a mild detergent without perfume or oil; that instruction should not be extended to spraying or submerging a whole model.
If a valuable or fragile model needs more than gentle dry dusting, leave wet or chemical cleaning aside and seek specialist advice. The Canadian Conservation Institute recommends consulting a conservator when simple cleaning methods do not work.

Can I use a paintbrush to dust LEGO?
Yes, if it is clean, very soft, and used dry with a light touch on stable parts of the model. A soft artist’s brush is consistent with conservation guidance for plastics and delicate objects. Avoid stiff, dirty, or shedding brushes, and stop rather than pressing on pieces that move.
