Use LiveKit’s transcript messages as the source of truth for captions—not a timer or the local audio player. For a standard Flutter conversation list, observe Session.messages. For a custom caption view, handle the lk.transcription text stream or use TranscriptionStreamReceiver, updating an in-progress segment in place as new chunks arrive.
Choose the Flutter transcript path that fits your UI
| Approach | Best for | What it provides |
|---|---|---|
Session.messages |
A standard chat or conversation list | The Flutter Session handles session lifecycle and, by default, uses a TextMessageSender on lk.chat and a TranscriptionStreamReceiver on lk.transcription. Its observable message list includes speech transcriptions and typed chat messages. See the Flutter Session API and LiveKit text streams documentation. |
| Direct text-stream handling or a custom receiver | Custom captions, highlighting, or specialized transcript behavior | More control over segment updates and optional timing data, but your code must handle stream lifecycle and transcript state. See the Flutter TranscriptionStreamReceiver API and Agents text and transcription guide. |
Use the session message list when it meets the interface’s needs. Choose direct handling when you need custom presentation or timing behavior and can manage stream updates yourself.
Keep transcript state separate from audio playback
LiveKit delivers agent speech over media tracks and transcript text over data text streams. Transcript arrival is therefore not an audio playback clock: do not estimate caption timing with a separate timer or infer it from local playback. Render the transcript events LiveKit provides. See LiveKit text streams documentation.
Update each transcript segment in place
Transcription arrives in chunks. Use the segment ID as the stable identity of the row, and update that row as the segment develops rather than adding a new row for every chunk. The Flutter receiver aggregates chunked updates into one received message per segment and uses lk.segment_id as its message ID; if that ID is absent, it falls back to the text stream ID. LiveKit’s Flutter API reference says the segment ID “is stable across the lifetime of a transcript segment.”

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Handle updates according to their semantics: agent transcript chunks append until the segment is final, while user updates may resend the entire current segment. Replace the user row’s content when receiving a full-segment update; blindly appending it can duplicate text. The receiver API reference documents this aggregation behavior.
Keep speech synchronization enabled for captions that follow the agent
When voice and transcription are enabled, LiveKit synchronizes the agent’s speech and transcript by default so text appears word by word as it is spoken. If the agent is interrupted, the transcript is truncated to match the speech already produced. Setting sync_transcription (or syncTranscription, depending on the API) to false sends text as soon as it is available instead of synchronizing it with speech. For a speech-following caption view, leave synchronization enabled. See the LiveKit Agents text and transcription guide.

Add timing data only for finer-grained display
If the interface needs timed highlighting or clickable transcript words, LiveKit supports TTS-aligned transcripts and JSON transcript output. A timed chunk can include text, start_time, and end_time, with times relative to the current agent turn. The documented example values are illustrative, not a performance measurement.
Timing granularity depends on the TTS provider. LiveKit lists Cartesia, ElevenLabs, Rime, and Speechify as supporting word-level timestamps; other providers, including LiveKit Inference, apply alignment at sentence level. The guide identifies transcription_node and TimedString as experimental, so verify their current APIs and provider behavior before depending on them. See the Agents text and transcription guide.

Check package and API versions
The Flutter API reference identifies livekit_client version 2.13.0. Pin the version your app uses and check its matching API documentation before copying implementation details; package APIs, method names, and provider capabilities can change. The documented API describes the general integration path, but does not prescribe an app-specific reconnect policy or state-management architecture.
