To keep a church’s YouTube livestream running through a power cut in India, back up the entire essential chain—not just the Wi-Fi router—with a correctly sized inverter or UPS and compatible battery. Measure the equipment’s actual watt load, choose a target backup duration, and confirm with your internet provider that its service stays available during local outages. An inverter can keep your equipment powered; it cannot restore an internet connection interrupted upstream.
What must stay powered for the livestream to continue?
List every device the stream depends on, then decide which are essential. Depending on your setup, that may include:
- The streaming computer or hardware encoder.
- The camera and essential audio/video equipment.
- The router and ONT/modem.
- A network switch or access point, if the connection depends on one.
A router-only backup can preserve the local network devices, but it will not keep a computer, encoder, camera, or other unbacked production equipment running. YouTube also warns that network disruption can break a live stream and recommends a reliable connection and upload headroom. How to size the inverter and battery
There is no reliable universal inverter size for a church livestream. The required capacity depends on the equipment that must remain on, its actual power draw, the desired outage runtime, and the battery and inverter characteristics.

- Measure the essential load. Record the watt draw of the devices that must operate together. Use measured values where possible, or the equipment labels and manuals as a starting point; do not include gear that can safely be shut down.
- Choose the required runtime. Decide how many hours of backup are needed for the service or other event. A system sized for a brief changeover is not necessarily suitable for a longer outage.
- Check inverter output capacity. Compare the combined load in watts with the inverter’s rated watt output, accounting for its power factor and whether it can support the equipment’s load. VA by itself does not establish usable watt capacity.
- Match the battery to the load and runtime. Battery needs depend on output watts, inverter efficiency, battery depth of discharge, age, temperature, and the battery’s discharge performance at the intended runtime. Use manufacturer discharge data and sizing guidance rather than estimating runtime from amp-hours alone.
- Confirm compatibility and installation. Check battery voltage and chemistry compatibility, changeover behavior, expansion options, service availability, and the complete installed cost. Follow the product manuals and have a qualified local installer assess wiring and battery selection.
Fuji Electric’s UPS-sizing guidance explains why load watts, power factor, inverter efficiency, autonomy, battery depth of discharge, age, and temperature all matter. Its approach supports sizing from the actual load and checking the selected battery against discharge data—not relying on a generic VA or amp-hour rule.
Choose a backup arrangement for your church
One inverter or UPS for the essential chain
A single system can back up the production and networking equipment together. Add the watt loads of the devices that must continue, then select an inverter and battery configuration rated for that combined load and your runtime target. Confirm the system supports the load and can be installed safely at the site.

Separate backup for networking and production
A dedicated UPS or DC mini UPS for the router and ONT can keep those network devices powered, while a separate system backs up the encoder and essential AV equipment. This may suit an installation with different device or placement needs, but the networking backup alone does not keep the full stream going. For a router or modem backup, check each device’s voltage, connector, polarity where applicable, and expected runtime against its label and manual. - Usable watt output and power factor for the equipment load.
- Expected runtime at that real load—not a headline runtime at a different load.
- Changeover behavior and the continuity your equipment needs.
- Battery type, voltage, compatibility, and future expansion.
- Local support, warranty, and total installed cost.
Line-interactive and online double-conversion UPS designs work differently; topology alone does not establish which is best for every church. Consider the equipment and continuity requirement, and compare the specifications and installation advice for the models available locally. Check the internet path, not only the power backup
Powering the router and ONT keeps those devices on; it does not guarantee that your broadband provider’s equipment or upstream network remains available during a local power cut. Ask your ISP whether service is maintained during outages in your area and what, if anything, you need to power at your premises to retain access.
Where supported, a wired Ethernet connection from the encoder to the router can reduce dependence on local Wi-Fi. It cannot prevent an upstream ISP interruption. YouTube recommends a reliable connection, upload headroom, and testing the setup before going live. Review YouTube’s encoder and network recommendations alongside your ISP’s guidance.

Install safely and test before a service
Choose a dry, well-ventilated location and follow the inverter and battery manufacturers’ instructions. Have a qualified local electrician assess wiring, earthing, transfer arrangements, ventilation, and battery installation. Exide recommends identifying essential loads such as computers and Wi-Fi routers before choosing an inverter, and points users to its calculator or dealer for matching: Exide inverter and battery guidance.

- Before a service, start a test stream and check the YouTube preview. YouTube recommends thoroughly testing and previewing the stream before starting.
- With the stream running, disconnect mains power from the backed-up load using the safe test procedure provided by your installer. Confirm the encoder, AV equipment, router, and ONT remain on.
- Check the YouTube preview and verify both audio and video. Confirm that internet service is still available and that the stream has not stopped.
- Restore mains power as directed by the equipment instructions, and note how the equipment behaves during changeover.
Do not perform a live changeover test for the first time during a service. A rehearsal can reveal an unbacked device, insufficient runtime, or an internet outage that the local inverter cannot fix.

Troubleshooting: what can still stop the stream?

Power backup and cloud playback do not grant rights to the video or music you stream. Use content you own or have permission to broadcast, and review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules before scheduling a service. A technically uninterrupted stream can still face a copyright claim or other policy action if its content is not permitted.
