Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf OBS loses a playlist, first find out whether the problem is local playback or whether YouTube has stopped receiving the encoder feed. If YouTube still shows incoming video and audio, use a prepared OBS fallback scene while volunteers investigate the playlist. If ingest is offline, switch to a rehearsed backup encoder or recovery plan. A stream-key reset does not restore a missing OBS playlist.
First determine what viewers are seeing
- Check YouTube’s Live Control Room. Look at the preview and stream status. Is YouTube still receiving picture and sound, or has the incoming feed gone offline? YouTube’s encoder workflow includes a preview before a scheduled stream goes live. YouTube’s live streaming setup guidance explains the workflow.
- Check the public player from a separate device. If possible, have another volunteer verify whether viewers see the expected service, a frozen or blank image, silence, or a fallback scene. OBS can remain connected to YouTube while its scene or media source is no longer producing the intended content.
- Keep the two diagnoses separate. A healthy incoming feed with the wrong or missing content points first to OBS playback or scene output. An offline feed points to encoder-to-YouTube ingest or a wider connection problem.
Do not reset the stream key simply because a playlist disappeared. YouTube describes the key as the credential an encoder uses to connect; its troubleshooting guidance discusses a new key when an encoder-start error requires one, not as a repair for local media playback. If YouTube still receives the OBS feed
Use the fallback scene while diagnosing
If you prepared a fallback scene, switch to it so viewers have a deliberate holding image and appropriate audio rather than a blank or unintended output. A still announcement slide with suitable audio can be more useful than leaving a broken source on screen. This is operational advice: YouTube documents testing encoder failover, but does not prescribe a specific OBS playlist-repair procedure.
Check the OBS source and media
- Confirm the expected playlist or media source is present in the scene and active, and that the intended scene is on air.
- Check whether the playlist file and referenced media files still exist in their expected locations and are accessible to the computer running OBS.
- Note the OBS version and the source type before following any version-specific repair steps. The exact controls depend on those details; the official YouTube guidance does not establish a universal OBS playlist fix.
If the source will not recover quickly, use the rehearsed fallback rather than making untested changes during the service. Afterward, record what failed, including whether the playlist file still existed, whether the source was visible, and whether YouTube reported incoming video and audio.

If YouTube has stopped receiving the feed
Use the church’s prepared recovery plan. If an independent backup encoder is configured, switch to it according to the plan and verify that YouTube’s preview and stream health show the backup feed. A second encoder can provide a separate path to a valid feed; it cannot be assumed to restore the primary computer’s missing playlist.
YouTube recommends testing encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. Rehearse the actual church setup before relying on it; the documentation does not promise that every configuration will hand off seamlessly. YouTube encoder setup and failover guidance

Prepare the service so recovery is manageable
- Set up ahead of time. Confirm the event and encoder access, and start the encoder before the scheduled event so there is time to inspect the incoming feed.
- Inspect the Live Control Room preview. Before taking the event live, verify that the intended picture and audio arrive from OBS. YouTube Help advises: “Before clicking Start Streaming, check the preview in the Live Control Room.”
- Test the playlist and fallback. Run through the service-like sequence, including the expected media source and the fallback scene. Test any independent backup encoder by simulating a primary-encoder failure.
- Monitor during the event. Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages as well as the viewer-facing output. YouTube Help advises: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” YouTube’s encoder preparation and monitoring guidance
- Keep a local recording and verify it is being written. YouTube recommends checking that the recording file grows during encoder preparation. This can help preserve a local copy if the live output has a problem.
- Stop in the right order. Follow YouTube’s event workflow: stop the YouTube event after the broadcast, then stop the encoder once the event has stopped.
For encoder settings, choose reliable settings that fit the available internet connection, test them before the service, and monitor stream health while live. YouTube also supports RTMPS when the encoder supports it; obtain the RTMPS server URL in Live Control Room and use it with the stream key. RTMPS is an encrypted transport option, not a way to repair a lost OBS playlist. Encoder setup guidance · YouTube stream-health and connection guidance
Choose recovery by the failure, not by guesswork
| Situation | Best immediate response | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives video and audio, but the intended playlist is absent or wrong | Use the OBS fallback scene and investigate the local source, playlist, and media paths. | A stream-key reset will not repair local playback. |
| YouTube shows that the incoming encoder feed is offline | Follow the rehearsed backup-encoder or recovery plan, then confirm the incoming preview and stream health. | A backup encoder is not guaranteed to recover the primary computer’s playlist. |
| The cause is unclear during the service | Give viewers a prepared holding output, monitor Live Control Room, and defer risky source changes until the service is stable. | The available YouTube guidance does not identify the cause of a particular OBS playlist failure. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs uploaded videos to loop continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and YouTube streams, not a camera-based church broadcast; it does not replace a live camera-and-microphone production in OBS.
