To keep a church’s live YouTube service online during a power cut, back up power for the entire production chain—not just the streaming computer—and test internet continuity separately. Size a UPS or inverter-and-battery system for the measured load and the outage duration you need to bridge; rehearse encoder failover and monitor the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Backup power cannot keep a stream online if the internet connection also fails.
Map everything the stream depends on
Trace the signal from the camera and microphones through the audio mixer or interface and encoder to the router or modem and internet connection. Include any network switch and other equipment needed to get the programme on air. Mark what must remain powered for viewers to receive usable picture and sound.
A computer with a charged battery is not a complete power plan if the router, modem, camera, audio equipment or switch goes off. YouTube treats encoder readiness and network connectivity as separate parts of stream preparation, and recommends testing equipment and monitoring audio and video quality. Before buying
- List the devices. Record each device’s input requirements and power draw from its label or manufacturer documentation. If the figure is unclear, ask a vendor or installer to measure the connected load.
- Set a runtime goal. Decide whether the system needs to ride through a brief transfer interruption, cover a short outage, or bridge a longer one. There is no church-specific or India-wide outage duration in the cited sources that can determine this for your site.
- Compare complete systems. Ask for quotes against the same load and target runtime. Compare supported continuous load, expected runtime at that load, battery configuration and replacement needs, transfer behaviour, devices included, and installation and wiring scope.
- Get site-specific advice. Have a qualified local installer assess the wiring, connections, batteries, transfer behaviour and premises before selecting a UPS or an inverter-and-battery arrangement. The available guidance identifies UPS and inverter systems as relevant categories, but does not specify one universal church system size. Do not use a VA label by itself as a promise of runtime. The useful comparison is how long the complete system is expected to support your measured connected load.

Plan for internet loss separately
A UPS or inverter can keep local equipment powered; it cannot restore an unavailable ISP connection. Test the fixed broadband connection and any mobile-data alternative from the actual streaming position. Check upload stability under realistic service conditions, not just a speed result from another location or time.
YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload headroom above the stream bitrate. If a backup encoder sends a second stream, include its bitrate in the upload capacity you need. Compare internet alternatives by whether they are genuinely independent of the primary connection, their upload stability and coverage at the church, and the total bitrate required. Do not apply NIC webcast specifications as general YouTube requirements. NIC’s guidance states 2–4 Mbps dedicated bandwidth per stream, a static public IP and RTMP port 1935 conditions for its government webcast arrangements; NIC describes services for Central and State Government institutions. Rehearse power and encoder failover before a service
- Set the stream up early. Configure the event and encoder ahead of the service, start the encoder in advance, and check the preview. Open the live page on a phone or another device to confirm what a viewer receives.
- Test with the real load connected. Simulate a mains interruption with the streaming equipment running. Check whether any device reboots, loses signal or needs manual recovery. Testing an empty UPS does not establish that the installed chain will stay up.
- Test internet fallback independently. Confirm that a mobile connection or other alternative works at the broadcast position and does not rely on the same failed equipment or connection as the primary path.
- Test encoder failover. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and confirming that the viewer’s player rolls over to the backup encoder. Verify that the backup encoder has its own working power and network access; otherwise it cannot take over. See YouTube’s streaming tips and live encoder guidance.
- Monitor during the service. Watch stream health in YouTube Live Control Room and check the picture and audio, rather than assuming the stream is healthy because the encoder appears to be running.
During a cut: identify which link failed
- All equipment is off or rebooting: check whether every required device is connected to the backup system and whether the system is supporting the actual load.
- Equipment stays on but the stream drops: check the internet connection and upload stability. Powered network equipment does not prove that the ISP path is available.
- The primary encoder fails to hand over: check the backup encoder’s power and network, then verify the player failover during a rehearsal rather than during a service.
- Picture or sound degrades: inspect the stream health and the camera, audio and encoding chain. YouTube recommends testing equipment and monitoring audio/video quality.
For longer outages, have a qualified installer select a site-appropriate inverter, battery arrangement or other solution. The cited sources do not establish a universally suitable system, runtime or design for every church.
