A local YouTube study-music stream can recover after a power outage, but no single setting handles the whole chain. Power must return to the UPS and equipment, the computer must boot, OBS must launch and reconnect, the network must reach YouTube, and YouTube must still have a live broadcast to receive the feed. Set up and test each link; a UPS alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream.
What has to recover for the stream to come back
Think of recovery as separate stages: backed-up power, computer startup, encoder startup and reconnection, internet access, and YouTube broadcast status. Success at one stage does not prove the next is working. OBS automatic reconnect can address a dropped connection while OBS is running; it cannot restore power, boot the computer, launch OBS, or verify YouTube is receiving usable video.
YouTube encoder streaming uses a stream URL and stream key configured in the encoder. YouTube describes the key as the credential that lets the encoder send the feed to the right place and lets YouTube accept it. Treat it like a password: do not expose it publicly, and replace it if it is compromised. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and live stream settings.
Prepare a local computer-and-UPS setup
1. Back up the equipment that must stay online
Connect the streaming computer and the modem/router equipment needed for internet access to battery-backed UPS outlets. Some UPS outlets provide surge protection only, so check the labels and manual. Keep the total load within the UPS’s rating and select capacity based on your actual equipment draw and the time you need to bridge.

Runtime depends on the connected load, battery condition and other factors; a recent discharge or an aging battery can reduce the time available. APC’s example gaming setups list 13 minutes for a gaming PC with one monitor and 27 minutes for a gaming laptop with one monitor, with a router/modem included by default in those examples. Those are configuration-specific examples, not runtime estimates for another setup. APC also notes that expected runtime is an approximation and that frequent use or elevated temperatures can wear batteries faster. Review the UPS maker’s load and runtime guidance rather than choosing a capacity from a generic rule. See APC’s UPS runtime examples.
2. Set the computer to start when AC power returns
In the computer’s BIOS or firmware, look for a setting named something like “restore on AC power loss,” “AC back,” or “power on after power failure.” Names and availability vary by system. Configure the operating system’s sign-in and startup behavior as needed so the streaming software can open after a reboot.

A UPS can restart when utility power returns, but that does not necessarily turn the attached computer back on. APC explains that the computer may require its BIOS option for powering on when power is available. A depleted UPS that resumes operation is not proof that the PC has booted. Read APC’s explanation of UPS and computer restart behavior.
3. Configure OBS and YouTube deliberately
In OBS, select the intended YouTube service/server and configure the correct stream key. Store the key securely. Enable OBS automatic reconnect for dropped connections, but do not treat this as a power-recovery feature: it only helps with the encoder’s connection when OBS is running.

YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls allow an encoder to start or stop a configured stream when those controls are enabled. They are not a promise that a stream will recover after a complete power loss, nor do they guarantee that an earlier broadcast session remains available. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that is an archive note, not a guarantee of outage recovery or a promise that a 24/7 stream stays live for 12 hours. Check YouTube’s live stream settings and its encoder workflow.
4. Test the full chain before relying on it
Use a controlled interruption when it is safe and practical. Observe the UPS, confirm the computer’s AC-restoration behavior, and check that OBS launches and sends the feed. Then inspect YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room for the incoming preview and stream health. A reconnect indicator in OBS alone is not confirmation that YouTube is receiving a usable feed.

What to do after power returns
- Check the UPS. Confirm it is back on utility power and is not overloaded or reporting a battery fault. If the outage depleted the battery, allow it to recharge and expect less backup time until it has recovered. APC lists a recent outage and a battery near end of life among possible reasons for reduced runtime; see its runtime guidance.
- Confirm the computer booted. If it did not, inspect its power state and firmware AC-restoration setting. The UPS restarting does not establish that the PC restarted.
- Check the encoder. Make sure OBS is open, using the intended YouTube stream key, and sending data. If OBS did not launch automatically, start it and check the configured scene and stream settings.
- Verify YouTube’s side. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and inspect the preview and stream health, then check the public watch page. If the previous broadcast has ended, use the channel’s scheduled or configured stream workflow as appropriate and verify the new broadcast is live before assuming viewers can hear the music.
- Investigate the network if power and OBS are stable. Check the modem/router, cables, network hardware, security software and ISP connection. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30, discusses these as possible causes of connection problems and recommends contacting the ISP if its network troubleshooting does not resolve them.
Why an outage can still end the broadcast
A short outage may be bridged if the UPS has enough runtime for the actual load. If the battery runs out, the computer can shut down; when power returns, the machine may remain off unless its firmware is configured to start. Even after the PC boots, OBS may fail to launch, the internet path may still be down, or YouTube may no longer be receiving the earlier broadcast. These are distinct failure points, so a local setup should be monitored and tested rather than described as truly uninterrupted.
A backup internet connection can help when the primary connection fails, but changing network paths does not itself restart a local encoder or guarantee that YouTube resumes the same session. Treat network failover and encoder recovery as separate parts of the plan.

| Approach | What it protects against | What still needs attention |
|---|---|---|
| Local PC plus UPS | A short power interruption, within the UPS’s available runtime at your equipment’s load. | Computer AC-restoration behavior, OBS startup and reconnect, YouTube broadcast status, and internet access. |
| Cloud playback | Dependence on the power and computer at your home for the uploaded-video playback job. | The provider’s exact YouTube workflow and recovery behavior; check those details before relying on a service. |
| Backup internet path | A failure of the primary internet connection, if the backup path and failover are configured to work. | Encoder recovery and YouTube session status; a different network path alone does not guarantee continuity. |
When sizing a UPS, compare measured or estimated watt load with its rating, runtime at that load, battery-backed versus surge-only outlets, battery age and replaceability, and whether USB/software support is needed for graceful shutdown. Do not choose a capacity without the equipment load and target bridge time. APC describes PowerChute UPS management software in connection with graceful shutdown and unattended startup; confirm compatibility and behavior for your own equipment.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting common recovery failures
- UPS is on, but the computer is off: Check that the PC is plugged into a battery-backed outlet, then verify the BIOS/firmware setting for starting after AC returns.
- Computer boots, but OBS is not streaming: Check operating-system startup/sign-in behavior, launch OBS, and confirm the YouTube service/server and stream key. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- OBS says it is reconnecting, but YouTube has no usable preview: Confirm the network is online and inspect Live Control Room. OBS reconnect does not establish that YouTube has a valid incoming feed.
- Power is stable, but the connection keeps dropping: Check modem/router status, cabling, network cards and intervening hardware, security software, and possible ISP congestion or changes. OBS’s network guide outlines these checks.
- UPS runtime is shorter than expected: Consider the actual load, a recent discharge, battery age and temperature. Recheck the manufacturer’s runtime guidance at your load and replace a worn battery as appropriate.
- The old YouTube broadcast has ended: Follow the channel’s scheduled/configured stream workflow to start a broadcast again, then verify the new stream in Live Control Room and on the watch page.
