End and restart your YouTube livestream before it reaches 12 hours. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Each restart creates a new live session; YouTube’s guidance does not promise that successive sessions will share one watch URL, chat, or uninterrupted viewer experience. For a separate safety copy, record locally while streaming and verify that the file keeps growing.

Why a 24/7 stream can become one enormous archive—or fail to archive

YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. A stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured, so a nonstop broadcast is not a reliable way to produce a sequence of smaller saved videos. The practical approach is to end one live session and start another before the 12-hour threshold, treating each as a separate session. YouTube does not promise that restarting preserves the same watch page or chat.

See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance for the archive limit and encoder workflow for starting and ending sessions.

Plan sessions that finish before the 12-hour threshold

  1. Set up the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room, create or select the stream, and connect your encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. Check the preview before going live.
  2. Choose a session length with a buffer. Schedule each session to end comfortably before 12 hours rather than trying to stop at the limit. The buffer is practical scheduling advice; YouTube’s published guidance is that streams under 12 hours can be archived and streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured.
  3. Tell viewers about the transition. Explain when the current session will end and where to find the next one. Do not assume the new session will retain the previous watch URL or chat.
  4. End the current session through the encoder and Live Control Room workflow. Confirm the stream has ended, then start the next session and check its preview before going live.
  5. Find the sessions afterward. YouTube says prior, current, and upcoming streams are available from the Live tab in YouTube Studio. Review each session’s archive there.

For the current interface details, follow YouTube’s encoder setup and stream-ending instructions.

Record a local backup while you stream

A recording on your computer is independent of YouTube’s archive. It gives you another copy to recover from if the platform archive is unavailable, but it does not change how YouTube creates or divides its recordings. YouTube explicitly recommends recording a local archive as a backup.

Configure OBS before the broadcast

  1. In OBS, open Settings > Output > Recording and choose a recording path on a drive with enough free space for the planned quality and retention period.
  2. Choose a recording format. OBS recommends MKV when resilience to an ungraceful stop is important: an interrupted MKV recording is less likely to lose the entire file. Some editing applications may not accept MKV directly; remux it to a compatible format in OBS if needed.
  3. Decide whether to record at Same as stream quality or another recording quality. OBS notes that recording at a different quality uses additional system resources, so test the workload before relying on it for a long broadcast.
  4. Run a short test stream and recording. Confirm that the saved file plays and that the recording destination has adequate space before starting the long session.

OBS documents concurrent streaming and recording, recording paths, and format options in its Standard Recording Output Guide and explains container trade-offs in its Audio/Video Formats Guide.

Check the recording while live

  • Confirm the local file exists, remains playable, and continues to grow in size.
  • Monitor the stream’s accessibility and audio/video quality rather than assuming that an active encoder means viewers can watch successfully.
  • Keep enough free space for the chosen recording quality, bitrate, and retention period. There is no universal drive-size requirement; estimate it from your actual recording settings and how long you need to keep the files.

YouTube also recommends checking local archive integrity and confirming that the file is growing. See its livestreaming tips.

Choose an approach—or combine them

Approach What it does Trade-off
End and restart before 12 hours Keeps each session within YouTube’s stated archive guidance. Requires session transitions; continuity of the watch URL and chat is not guaranteed by YouTube’s cited instructions.
Record locally while streaming Creates a separate copy you can check and retain. Uses local storage and system resources; OBS says a recording quality other than “Same as stream” uses extra resources.
Do both Combines shorter YouTube sessions with a local recovery copy. You need to monitor both the live broadcast and the recording destination.

Do not confuse DVR with the saved archive

DVR controls whether viewers can pause and rewind during a live stream; it is not a setting for dividing the later archive into smaller videos. YouTube says rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, and viewers cannot seek to a point before the stream began. Turning DVR off does not prevent a recording of the whole stream from becoming available afterward. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Troubleshooting

The stream ended, but no archive appeared

Check the session length first. YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. For future broadcasts, end and restart before that threshold, and keep the local recording as a backup.

The local recording is missing or stopped growing

Check the recording path and available disk space in OBS, then verify that recording was actually started. YouTube recommends checking that the local file exists, remains intact, and grows during the stream. Test the full setup before the next long session.

The recording is damaged after an abrupt shutdown

For future recordings, select MKV in OBS when resilience to an ungraceful stop is the priority. An existing damaged file may not be recoverable; do not treat a recording format choice as a substitute for testing and monitoring.

The computer struggles when streaming and recording

OBS notes that recording at a quality other than “Same as stream” uses extra resources. Test the intended stream and recording settings together, and lower the recording workload if the system cannot sustain both reliably.
