To keep a prerecorded news playlist live on YouTube around the clock, host the media on an always-on OVHcloud VPS, run an encoder that sends a continuous feed to YouTube Live, and monitor both the encoder and YouTube’s stream health. Choose settings based on the VPS’s measured, sustained upload capacity—not its advertised peak. If you need YouTube to retain archives, plan for broadcasts shorter than 12 hours: YouTube warns that longer streams may not be captured.
How the 24/7 stream is put together
The basic path is media files on the VPS → an encoder process → YouTube Live ingest. The VPS keeps the files and encoder running; the encoder prepares and sends the feed; YouTube receives it and makes the live event watchable. This is a self-managed setup: the VPS, network route, encoder, media files, and YouTube each create possible failure points.
YouTube’s API distinguishes the watchable event, called a liveBroadcast, from the incoming feed configuration, called a liveStream. YouTube documents a use case where a channel keeps one 24/7 broadcast going while creating another broadcast for a separate event. That distinction matters when deciding whether news programming should share one continuous watch page or use separate events. Google’s broadcasts and streams API overview describes the relationship.
Choose the playback and encoding approach
Playlist automation
Use a process that can move through your selected prerecorded files and continue sending a feed when one item ends. The exact playlist mechanism depends on your encoder and media formats. FFmpeg is a command-line option suited to headless automation; OBS offers a graphical scene and mixer workflow. These are workflow distinctions, not evidence that one is more reliable or faster on a particular OVHcloud VPS.

Do not copy an unverified command or service file into production: the available information does not establish a tested FFmpeg command, systemd unit, watchdog, or OVHcloud configuration. Confirm current encoder options and service-manager behavior against the official documentation for the software and operating system you choose before deploying. A third-party example may help identify topics to investigate, but it is not a validated recipe for this setup: Space-Node’s 24/7 VPS streaming article.
Transcode or send compatible pre-encoded files
Real-time transcoding can standardize output, but it makes the server do encoding work continuously. Sending already encoded media may reduce that work, but only if the files are compatible with the chosen output requirements and transition cleanly. Test with your actual playlist and inspect CPU use and stream health; no OVHcloud-specific performance benchmark establishes which approach a given instance can sustain.

Set the YouTube ingest quality to match measured capacity
YouTube recommends RTMPS for live encoder connections. Its guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video options, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no farther than four seconds apart. The table below gives YouTube’s published H.264 ingest bitrate values; they are not measurements of an OVHcloud VPS or route.

These figures come from YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026. Pick a resolution and frame rate your source media and encoder can sustain, then test sustained outbound throughput from the specific VPS and region to YouTube. Leave headroom rather than planning to use the full measured rate continuously. OVHcloud lists plan-level network options, but those do not prove the sustained rate or route performance of a particular instance. Prepare YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Configure the event and feed separately. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the broadcast and configure the encoder feed for it. Follow YouTube’s current instructions for creating a stream with an encoder; available controls can vary with channel eligibility and interface changes.
- Use the stream key only in the encoder’s protected configuration. YouTube says the key tells the encoder where to send the feed and is like a password. Restrict access to the configuration or secret store; do not put the key in a public repository, screenshot, or exposed log. See YouTube’s live stream settings and stream-key guidance.
- Reset an exposed key. If it is disclosed, an authorized channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room, then replace the key in the encoder configuration.
Test, monitor, and plan for recovery
Before relying on the playlist, run a private or unlisted test using representative motion and audio. Check file transitions, audio continuity, the YouTube stream-health messages, and what happens if the encoder or connection is interrupted. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health in its encoder guidance.

A process supervisor or restart policy can help restart unattended software after a process failure, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming and is not a substitute for monitoring. No specific systemd or watchdog design is validated here. VPS availability, network routes, encoder faults, unreadable media, and YouTube-side interruptions can all stop or degrade a stream.

- Keep an eye on the encoder process, CPU use, outbound traffic, available disk space, and YouTube’s health messages.
- When the stream stops, identify whether the encoder exited, the media playlist stalled, the network route failed, or YouTube rejected or lost the feed before restarting blindly.
- Test reconnect behavior and item transitions with the actual software and library before using the setup for unattended programming.
Choose a broadcast and archive strategy
A single ongoing broadcast gives viewers one continuing event, but it is not a dependable way to create one complete YouTube archive of a 24/7 channel. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. The 12-hour guidance is an archive limitation, not a promise that every shorter stream will be retained under every channel condition. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.

If you need recordings, arrange local recording or divide programming into shorter broadcasts and verify the resulting workflow on your channel. Segments can make archives easier to manage but create more events and transitions; one continuous event avoids those scheduled breaks but should not be treated as your only archive.
Size the VPS from the workload, not a guessed plan
There is no universal OVHcloud instance size established for this job. Decide whether your encoder transcodes or mostly sends compatible pre-encoded media, estimate the total media-library storage needed, and measure CPU and sustained outbound throughput during a representative run. Recheck plan specifications and availability in the region where you will purchase. OVHcloud’s documentation portal is the starting point for VPS provisioning and account management.
Before committing, verify that the server can keep the chosen encoder stable, the files fit in available storage, and the route sustains the selected bitrate with headroom. A plan’s advertised network figure is not a measured YouTube ingest result.
