YouTube may not capture a livestream that runs for more than 12 hours, so one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast is not a dependable way to create a complete replay. To manage existing archives, change a replay’s visibility if you want to retain it without making it public, or delete it only after saving any copy you need. Neither action compresses the original recording.
Know what YouTube’s 12-hour archive guidance means
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is an archive-capture risk, not a guaranteed maximum file size, a storage quota, or a promise that a replay under 12 hours will always be available.
For a 24/7 music broadcast, do not assume YouTube will produce one complete replay of the entire continuous stream. If you want YouTube replays, plan separate sessions shorter than 12 hours. Decide whether viewers should still be able to find the session, whether you want to retain an online copy, and whether you need a separate local copy before removing it.

- Keep it public if the session should remain discoverable.
- Change its visibility if you want to retain the YouTube replay but stop making it public. This is lower-risk than deletion when you may want the online copy later.
- Delete it only when you no longer need the YouTube copy and have preserved any backup you want. Deletion is permanent.
Change visibility or delete an archive in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Content.
- Open the Live tab to find your livestream archives.
- For a replay you want to retain, open its details, change Visibility to the setting you intend, and save.
- To remove an archive, open its More menu and select Delete. Confirm only after checking that you selected the right replay and saved any copy you need.
YouTube documents these visibility and deletion controls; the cited guidance does not specify age-based automatic retention or bulk deletion. Hiding or deleting a YouTube replay changes its online availability. It does not compress or reduce the size of the source recording.
Keep a local backup when the recording matters
YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. A local copy gives you something separate to keep before deleting a replay from YouTube, but it does not make YouTube’s stored archive smaller.

While recording locally, check that the file exists, is intact, and continues to grow. YouTube’s streaming tips also recommend upload bandwidth headroom of 20% above the total stream bitrate, including primary and backup streams. The guidance does not prescribe a particular drive, storage capacity, or paid backup service.

If older sessions should remain available, YouTube describes organizing livestream archives and highlights into playlists. This can make retained replays easier for viewers to browse, but it does not reduce their file size or remove them from the channel. See YouTube’s livestream promotion guidance.
