You can keep a YouTube livestream running while your computer is off by renting a server, placing the media on it or making the source accessible, and running a playback or encoding process that sends the feed to YouTube Live. How the server-to-YouTube setup works
The rented server takes over the always-on playback or encoder role normally handled by a computer at home. The basic path is:
Media file or live source → playback/encoder process on the rented server → YouTube Live ingestion.

Relay an already encoded video or encode it on the server?
A process that relays an already encoded stream can have different compute needs from software that encodes or transcodes video. If you encode on the server, CPU capacity and the selected output settings matter; if you only relay, sustained network capacity and the playback process are central. YouTube does not specify a universal VPS CPU, memory, or monthly transfer minimum for this setup. Ask the host whether the exact workload is permitted and what capacity and transfer charges apply.
Prepare YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Check your channel and content first. Confirm that your channel can use YouTube Live and that you have the rights to broadcast every video, audio track, and other media in the stream. Platform technical guidance does not determine whether a specific continuous prerecorded stream is permitted or eligible under YouTube’s content and monetization rules.
- Create or schedule the livestream in YouTube Live Control Room. Choose the intended stream settings and locate the RTMPS server URL and stream key for the encoder setup.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Enter it only in the encoder or playback service that needs it. Do not publish it in screenshots, share it, or leave it exposed in logs. If it is disclosed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s live controls before continuing.
- Use RTMPS where supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over SSL/TLS. Use the endpoint and path provided for your stream. For API-based encoder connections, YouTube’s documentation specifies port 443 and SNI hostname handling; a normal encoder setup should use the RTMPS URL supplied in Live Control Room rather than guessing an endpoint.
Choose a stream profile that the server can sustain
Set quality according to the server’s real, sustained upload capacity—not a short-lived speed test. YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance recommends H.264 video bitrate of 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p60. It specifies CBR and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. These are YouTube configuration recommendations, not a guarantee of server performance or a minimum VPS specification. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates.

- Start with a resolution and frame rate the server can maintain continuously; do not select 1080p60 just because it is available if the connection cannot sustain the bitrate.
- Use CBR and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, keeping it at or below 4 seconds.
- Allow capacity beyond the video bitrate for audio and network overhead. Estimate monthly transfer using the actual output bitrate and the provider’s billing policy; do not assume a universal included allowance.
- For encoding or transcoding on the server, check that its CPU can sustain the chosen profile. The YouTube bitrate recommendations do not prescribe CPU or memory requirements.
Configure and test the server process
- Make the media available to the server. Upload the file or configure reliable access to the source. Check available storage and the host’s transfer policy before committing to a long-running stream.
- Configure the playback or encoder process. Select the media source, output resolution and frame rate, H.264 bitrate and CBR mode as applicable, audio settings, and the RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.
- Start a representative test. Test with the real audio and motion in the intended content, not only a static screen. YouTube specifically advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages. Confirm the stream is arriving and that the selected output remains stable. Adjust quality downward if the server’s sustained network or encoding capacity is insufficient.
- Only then leave the process running. Verify that playback continues through the expected loop or playlist and that the YouTube live event remains active after your own computer is shut down.

Plan for disconnects, restarts, and maintenance
A 24/7 configuration needs more than a process that starts once. Arrange for the playback or encoder process to restart after failure, reconnect when the connection to YouTube drops, and resume the intended media. Add monitoring or alerts so a stopped process or failed ingest does not go unnoticed. Check how the host handles maintenance and server restarts, and test recovery deliberately before relying on the setup. These are operational precautions, not uptime guarantees from YouTube or an unverified hosting plan.

Verify Paytm and hosting terms before checkout
Paytm’s merchant-facing information describes how merchants can accept payments; it does not establish that a particular server host accepts Paytm from a customer. Its international payment-gateway enablement is subject to approval, which likewise does not prove that every host, account location, or Paytm instrument will work at checkout. Check the host’s actual payment page or ask support before renting. Paytm’s information is available at Paytm Payment Gateway and Paytm UPI for businesses.
- Does the host accept your specific Paytm payment method from your country or account location?
- Can that method be used for recurring renewals, or only an initial payment?
- Does the host permit continuous outbound media streaming under its acceptable-use terms?
- What monthly outbound transfer is included, how is usage counted, and what do overages cost?
- How are scheduled maintenance and restarts handled, and what cancellation or refund terms apply?
