It handles a lost connection while OBS is still running. To recover from a process crash, pair a tested way to relaunch OBS with a separate YouTube backup encoder if you need viewers to keep receiving a feed during the outage. For prerecorded lessons or playlists, a cloud service such as StreamNeo is another production workflow that does not depend on an OBS PC staying on.
What fails when OBS crashes?
There are two different failure cases, and they need different fixes:
- Connection loss: OBS remains open but loses its connection to YouTube. OBS’s Automatic Reconnect setting is intended for this case.
- OBS exits or crashes: The encoder process stops. A reconnect option inside OBS cannot relaunch an application that is no longer running. You need an external restart mechanism, and a separately configured backup encoder if you want YouTube to have another feed to switch to.
These measures address different parts of continuity: restarting OBS restores the primary encoder, while YouTube’s backup-encoder setup can provide a failover source. Configure and test the actual arrangement before relying on it for a continuous program.
How do I keep my 24/7 YouTube stream running if OBS crashes?
1. Create the YouTube stream and secure its key
In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to set up or select a stream. In the stream settings, copy the stream key into OBS. YouTube describes the key as the credential that lets an encoder send a feed; treat it as sensitive and do not publish or share it. You can use a custom stream key again, and YouTube provides auto-start and auto-stop settings in stream settings. 2. Configure OBS to reconnect when only the connection drops
In OBS, open Settings > Advanced > Network and enable Automatically Reconnect. Set a retry delay and maximum retries appropriate to your network and operations; these values control reconnection attempts, not recovery from a closed or crashed OBS process. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide covers reconnect behavior and related network issues.
3. Arrange a way to relaunch OBS after a crash
OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter, which starts streaming when OBS launches. It does not, by itself, restart OBS after a crash. Use an external process monitor, scheduled task, or system service to detect an exit and relaunch OBS with that parameter. On Windows, OBS documentation says automated launches should use the folder containing obs64.exe as the working directory. See OBS launch parameters.
The exact supervisor setup depends on your operating system and how OBS is installed; the cited OBS guidance does not specify or endorse a particular watchdog. Configure your supervisor to avoid launching multiple OBS instances, and test whether OBS reconnects and resumes the intended stream after relaunch. Do this with an unlisted or otherwise controlled stream before production.

4. Add and test a separate backup encoder
If a stream must remain available while the OBS machine is down or restarting, configure a backup encoder in YouTube rather than relying only on restarting the primary. YouTube recommends a backup encoder and explicitly recommends testing the switch: “For test encoder failover, stop the primary encoder (or unplug its Ethernet cable). Make sure the player rolls over to the backup encoder.” Follow YouTube’s streaming tips, then verify the viewer-facing player actually changes to the backup feed.
A hardware live-streaming encoder is one possible backup-source category, but no specific model or compatibility is established here. Before buying equipment, confirm with its manufacturer that it supports your planned ingest protocol, stream-key handling, output resolution and bitrate, unattended restart behavior, and YouTube failover arrangement. Hardware alone does not configure or test failover.
5. Provide bandwidth for both encoders
YouTube recommends upload capacity for the primary bitrate plus the backup bitrate, with an additional 20% headroom. Its guidance says, “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” The available upload capacity must support both feeds at the same time for this design; a backup encoder cannot send a usable feed if the connection lacks capacity. 6. Keep a local recording if the program must be preserved
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours may be automatically archived and warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A 24/7 program therefore should not depend solely on YouTube’s archive if you need a complete recording. Keep a local recording or another recording plan; see YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

OBS reconnects but the stream still stops after a crash
Reconnect only applies while OBS is running. Add and test an external supervisor for process exits; use a separately configured YouTube backup encoder if a feed must continue while OBS is unavailable.

OBS relaunches but does not start streaming
Confirm the launch command includes --startstreaming, the supervisor uses the correct OBS executable, and on Windows the working directory is the folder containing obs64.exe. Test the complete restart path in a controlled stream.
The backup encoder does not appear in the player
Do not assume that a second encoder automatically means YouTube will fail over. Check the backup configuration and test by stopping the primary or disconnecting its Ethernet as YouTube recommends. Confirm the player rolls over before using the arrangement for a live program.
Both encoders struggle or disconnect
Check that available upload bandwidth accommodates the combined primary and backup bitrates plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. A shared or unstable connection can undermine both sources.

The stream archive is incomplete
For a continuous stream longer than 12 hours, YouTube says the stream may not be captured at all. Retain a local recording if you need the full program.
