Short answer: YouTube’s live-streaming guidance specifies audio encoding settings, but it does not give creators an integrated loudness target in LUFS. So there is no substantiated YouTube live requirement to master a yoga nidra stream to −14 LUFS. Instead, balance the full program for comfortable, steady listening, prevent digital clipping, measure loudness and true peak with suitable meters, and test and monitor the actual YouTube playback.
What audio level does YouTube recommend for a live stream?
YouTube’s live encoder recommendations specify audio formats and encoding parameters—not a creator-side integrated loudness target in LUFS. The guidance lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS audio, 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1 audio, and 128 kbps for stereo or 384 kbps for 5.1. Those are delivery settings; they do not tell you how loud to master narration or ambience.
In particular, the cited YouTube guidance does not establish −14 LUFS, or another LUFS figure, as a live-stream requirement. Treating a commonly repeated loudness number as an official YouTube rule would conflate platform encoding guidance with a creator’s program mix.

Peak level protects against clipping
Digital full scale is 0 dBFS. OBS’s technical explanation says audio must remain below 0 dBFS to avoid clipping distortion. Its mixer display is useful for spotting peaks, but it is peak-oriented and does not report the integrated loudness of a whole program. OBS also documents its meter conventions: a −20 dBFS alignment level and a permitted maximum meter level of −9 dBFS. These are OBS meter settings, not YouTube targets or recommended yoga nidra levels. See OBS’s Audio Mixer Technical Details.

Integrated loudness describes the program over time
Integrated loudness helps describe the overall loudness across a program; true peak estimates peaks that can occur between digital samples, including around lossy encoding. These measures answer different questions from a peak display. A mix can avoid clipping and still feel uneven if quiet narration disappears beneath the sound bed or a louder passage suddenly dominates.
Comfort and intelligibility matter overnight
Check the ordinary and quietest narration, louder words, music or ambient sounds, pauses, and transitions between sessions. Yoga nidra often has long quiet stretches, so simply raising the entire mix to make one line audible can make other moments uncomfortable. Aim for a calm, consistent relationship between voice and ambience rather than maximum loudness.

A practical workflow for preparing and checking the stream
- Prepare the complete source program. Use consistent source files and sample rates. Inspect the beginning and end of each recording, overlaps, silence, loop points, and transitions. Confirm you have permission to use all narration, music, and ambience in the continuous program.
- Balance voice and sound bed. Compare normal narration and the quietest phrases with the ambience, then check louder words and passages. Use clip gain or automation to correct mismatched recordings before applying processing to the whole mix. If the source dynamics need control, use gentle compression; avoid aggressive processing that makes a restorative practice tiring to hear.
- Measure loudness and true peak. Use a loudness meter that reports integrated loudness and true peak over the intended program, or representative segments if the full program is too long to measure at once. Use the OBS mixer as a useful peak check, not as an integrated loudness meter. Keep output below digital clipping. The Audio Engineering Society recommends a maximum true peak of −1 dBTP at codec input for lossy-encoded internet streams; this is broader AES guidance, not a YouTube requirement. If you adopt it, treat it as a conservative safety ceiling, not an official platform target. The cited AES document’s version and date are not established here, so do not present that figure as a dated YouTube specification. See AES internet-audio guidance.
- Test the actual chain with representative audio. YouTube advises testing with audio representative of the stream and checking stream quality. Where practical, make an unlisted or private test and listen in the YouTube player. Include narration, ambience, pauses, the loop point, and transitions—not just a loud sample. Check at a normal listening level and, if feasible, on more than one playback device. Headphones can help reveal balance problems, but they do not measure LUFS or true peak.
- Monitor the live output. During operation, check the live player and stream health for silence, unexpected jumps, distortion, and source or playout failure. YouTube’s general live-streaming tips call for continuously monitoring audio and video quality.
What YouTube Stable volume can—and cannot—do
YouTube says Stable volume “balances the range between quiet and loud, continuously adjusting volume levels to reduce variations in sound.” It is a viewer-side playback feature, enabled by default when available, but it is not available for every video. It cannot substitute for a controlled source mix or guarantee that every listener hears the same result. Prepare and test the stream as the creator; do not rely on Stable volume to rescue uneven narration and ambience. See YouTube’s Stable volume help.
Troubleshooting common audio problems
- Distortion on louder words: Inspect the source and output peaks for clipping. Lower gain before the point of clipping; a peak meter can help identify the problem, but it will not describe the program’s overall loudness.
- Quiet narration gets lost: Compare the voice with the ambience during the quietest phrases. Adjust clip gain or automate individual recordings before raising the entire program, then retest louder phrases so they do not become uncomfortable.
- The stream sounds uneven between sessions: Check each session’s narration, sound bed, pauses, and transitions with a loudness meter and by listening to representative playback. Correct mismatched source levels and transitions rather than assuming one peak reading proves consistency.
- The loop begins or ends abruptly: Inspect the recording boundaries and the actual loop transition in a test stream. Correct gaps, overlaps, silence, or abrupt changes in the source program before relying on continuous playout.
- The YouTube player sounds different from the source file: Test the full YouTube playback path and monitor the live player. Playback processing, including Stable volume when available, may affect what a viewer hears, so judge the delivered stream rather than only the local file.
- You are unsure whether the level is “right”: There is no LUFS number in the cited YouTube live-encoder guidance to settle that question. Use meters to control loudness and true peak, and make the final decision by checking whether the quietest narration remains understandable and louder moments remain comfortable in representative playback.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the audio is ready and the remaining job is continuous YouTube playout, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It does not normalize or certify audio, so prepare and test the mix using the workflow above.
