If you also need each item’s position, use enumerate(items). For filtering, build a new list rather than removing items from the list being traversed.
Iterate over list values
A Python for loop visits sequence items in order, so you do not need to manage a counter when the position does not matter.
items = ["apple", "banana", "cherry"]
for item in items:
print(item)
This pattern also works with other iterables, such as strings, files, and generators. The loop asks for items one at a time and stops when there are no more. See the Python 3.14.8 control-flow tutorial.
Get both the index and value with enumerate()
Use enumerate() when your code needs both an item and its position. It counts from zero by default.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
for index, item in enumerate(items):
print(index, item)
To count from one—for example, when displaying numbered output—pass start=1:
for number, item in enumerate(items, start=1):
print(number, item)
enumerate() works with iterables generally, including ones that do not support indexing. The official tutorial demonstrates it alongside other loop helpers in its data-structures examples; its rationale is recorded in PEP 279.

Use indexes when the position drives the work
If you need index-based access, such as using a position in a calculation or referring to neighboring list entries, loop over range(len(items)) and access the list at each index:
for index in range(len(items)):
print(items[index])
range() excludes its stop value. Since list indexes run from zero through one less than the list length, range(len(items)) covers the valid indexes. If you only need an index and its corresponding value, enumerate() expresses that job more directly. The control-flow tutorial covers both approaches.

Choose a traversal helper for the task
| Need | Pattern | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Visit values in their existing order | for item in items: |
Processes each value in sequence order. |
| Visit values with their positions | for index, item in enumerate(items): |
Pairs each value with a count beginning at zero by default. |
| Pair corresponding values from iterables | for left, right in zip(left_values, right_values): |
Processes corresponding entries together. |
| Visit a sequence in reverse | for item in reversed(items): |
Traverses the sequence backwards. |
| Visit values in sorted order | for item in sorted(items): |
Traverses a sorted list returned by sorted(); the original list is left unchanged. |
These are examples from the Python data-structures tutorial. Choose based on whether you need paired values, reverse order, or sorted order—not just because a helper is available.
Filter or transform without changing the list under the loop
Removing or inserting items in the list being traversed can make it difficult to reason about which items the loop will visit. For filtering, build a separate result and keep values that meet your condition:

filtered = []
for item in items:
if keep(item):
filtered.append(item)
The original list remains available while the loop runs, and filtered contains the retained values afterward. The Python data-structures tutorial recommends creating a new list as a simpler, safer alternative to changing a list during iteration.
What a for loop does
An iterable is an object from which Python can obtain an iterator with iter(). A for loop repeatedly requests the next item; the iterator signals that it is exhausted by raising StopIteration. The iterator protocol uses __iter__() and __next__(), as described in the Python built-in types reference.

Because an iterator advances as it is consumed, a one-shot iterator is not automatically rewound for another pass. Obtain a fresh iterator from the iterable when you need to traverse it again. The Functional Programming HOWTO explains this iterator behavior.
Related case: iterating over a dictionary
Although a dictionary is not a list, it follows the same for-over-iterable pattern. A loop over a dictionary visits keys; use mapping.values() for values or mapping.items() for key-value pairs:
for key in mapping:
print(key)
for key, value in mapping.items():
print(key, value)
Dictionary iteration order is guaranteed to match insertion order starting with Python 3.7, according to the Python Functional Programming HOWTO.
