A context keeps its cookies and browser storage separate from other contexts, while letting several isolated sessions run inside one browser. Playwright Test’s built-in page and context fixtures already provide a new context for each test. For true isolation, also separate or coordinate the server-side accounts and data those tests use.
What browser-session isolation does—and does not—protect
A browser context is an isolated browser session: it separates cookies, local storage, and session storage. A test that starts in a fresh context does not inherit those browser-side values from another test. Playwright describes this model in its BrowserContext isolation documentation.
That boundary ends at the browser. Two isolated contexts can still sign in as the same user and modify the same account, database row, global setting, file, or external service. Browser isolation prevents cookie leakage; it does not make shared backend state independent. For parallel testing, isolate both layers: fresh browser contexts and appropriately distinct server-side users or records.
Use Playwright Test’s default fixtures for independent tests
For ordinary tests, use the built-in page fixture (or context when you need context-level controls). Playwright Test creates a new context for each test and closes it afterward, so you generally do not need to launch a browser or manually create contexts in each test.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('first test has its own browser session', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
// Cookies or storage created here belong to this test's context.
});
test('second test starts with a separate browser session', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
// This test does not inherit the first test's browser storage.
});
This is usually preferable to clearing cookies and storage after each test. A cleanup routine can miss state or fail to run after an error; a fresh context starts with separate browser state. Playwright’s isolation guidance frames the benefit as starting from scratch so a failing test can be debugged within that test.
Run multiple isolated users in one scenario
When one test needs two signed-in identities—for example, a buyer and seller, or an administrator and a standard user—create two contexts from the same browser and open a page in each. The contexts share the browser process but not their session storage or cookies.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('two users have separate sessions', async ({ browser }) => {
const aliceContext = await browser.newContext();
const bobContext = await browser.newContext();
try {
const alicePage = await aliceContext.newPage();
const bobPage = await bobContext.newPage();
await alicePage.goto('https://example.com/login');
await bobPage.goto('https://example.com/login');
// Sign each page in as a different user and exercise the interaction.
} finally {
await aliceContext.close();
await bobContext.close();
}
});
Close manually created contexts when the scenario finishes, including when a test throws; the finally block makes that cleanup reliable. Use different backend accounts as well if the scenario changes account data.
Reuse authentication without reusing a live session
Repeatedly signing in through the UI can add setup time. Playwright supports saving authenticated browser state and loading it into fresh contexts, so tests can avoid the login flow without sharing one live context. Its authentication guidance explains storage state and setup patterns.

- Authenticate in a setup step. Sign in and save the context’s storage state to a file such as
playwright/.auth/user.json. - Keep the file private. Add the authentication-state directory to
.gitignore. Cookies and related state may permit impersonation. - Initialize fresh test contexts from that state. In Playwright Test, configure the project’s
use.storageStateto the saved file, or pass the file when creating a context. Each test can then have its own browser context while using the saved login. - Choose accounts according to what tests do. A shared authenticated account is suitable only when concurrent tests do not mutate state that affects each other. For state-changing parallel tests, use separate accounts, often one per worker.
Saved authentication state isolates neither the account’s server-side data nor concurrent changes to that account. It is a way to reuse login credentials, not a substitute for backend test-data isolation.
Keep parallel tests from colliding on server-side data
Playwright can run test files or tests in parallel, but parallel browser contexts do not prevent two tests from editing the same server record. Playwright’s parallelism guidance discusses avoiding shared state in parallel tests.

- Create unique records per test. Use unique identifiers for records a test creates or edits, so one test cannot overwrite another’s data.
- Use worker-specific test users where appropriate. A worker can reuse its own user when its tests need a stable identity, while other workers use different users.
- Serialize only the unsafe work. If a global setting or shared resource cannot be made independent, coordinate access or run the affected tests with one worker. Avoid disabling parallelism for unrelated tests unless necessary.
- Clean up deliberately. Remove created records or reset server state when appropriate, but do not rely on cleanup as the only protection against concurrent writes.
For broader infrastructure, files and external services also count as shared state. A fresh browser context cannot prevent two tests from writing the same file or changing the same external resource.

| Approach | What it isolates or improves | Best fit | Risk to account for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh context per test | Cookies and browser storage | Default for independent tests | Does not isolate server-side data |
| Saved storage state loaded into fresh contexts | Preserves a reusable authenticated starting point while keeping contexts separate | Reducing repeated sign-in setup | State files are sensitive; shared accounts may collide when tests mutate data |
| Cleanup in a reused context | Attempts to reset selected state between tests | Cases where context reuse is required | Cleanup can be incomplete or skipped; hidden state may remain |
| Separate users and unique backend records | Server-side state and concurrent mutations | Parallel tests that create or change data | Requires test-data provisioning and cleanup |
Playwright’s Python API describes non-persistent contexts as not writing browsing data to disk; its BrowserContext API reference covers that behavior. Treat a context as a test-scoped session and persist only the authentication state the setup needs.

Troubleshoot session leakage and cross-test interference
A test sees another test’s cookie or local storage
Check that the tests use Playwright Test’s test-scoped page or context fixtures, rather than a manually shared context. If you created a context yourself, create a new one for each independent session and close it when finished.
Two tests still change the same user
This is server-side interference, not browser-session leakage. Give tests separate users or unique records, or coordinate the specific shared resource. A fresh context can still authenticate as the same account.
Parallel runs fail intermittently, but serial runs pass
Look for shared accounts, records, global settings, files, and external services that concurrent tests mutate. Make those resources worker-specific or test-specific where possible; serialize only the affected work when safe separation is impractical.
A saved login stops working or exposes credentials
Regenerate the state through the authentication setup if it is stale. Keep the file in an ignored directory and out of version control: stored cookies or headers can grant account access.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single request can capture a URL without setting up a browser context. This is useful for screenshot capture, but it does not replace Playwright’s contexts for testing interactive user flows or isolating test sessions.
