To invert a Matplotlib y-axis with a specific range, reverse the limit order: ax.set_ylim(high, low). To reverse its direction while retaining the current limits or autoscaling behavior, use ax.yaxis.set_inverted(True). For images, check imshow’s origin, extent, and the Axes limits before changing the axis; for twinx(), apply the change to the twin Axes whose right-side scale you want to reverse.
Choose the method that matches your goal

Reverse a y-axis with explicit limits
When you know the desired endpoints, pass the larger value first and the smaller value second. For example, ax.set_ylim(10, 0) places 10 at the bottom and 0 at the top. This sets the range as well as its direction.

Invert the direction without changing the limits
If you want to change the axis direction without providing another pair of endpoints, set the inversion state:

ax.yaxis.set_inverted(True)This is useful when preserving the current limits or autoscaling behavior matters. The Matplotlib inversion example specifically recommends Axis.set_inverted for that purpose.
The current stable API reference marks Axes.invert_yaxis() as discouraged. Existing code using it may still be understandable, but for new examples use reversed set_ylim when setting bounds, or ax.yaxis.set_inverted(True) when changing direction independently of bounds. Fix an upside-down-looking imshow image
imshow displays a two-dimensional array inside an image extent. Its origin setting determines how rows fill that extent: origin="upper" places the first array row at the top, while origin="lower" places it at the bottom. The default is controlled by rcParams["image.origin"], whose documented default is 'upper'.
ax.imshow(image, origin="upper") # first array row at topDo not assume that a top-down image means the Axes itself needs another inversion. The displayed orientation also depends on extent, which maps the image into data coordinates, and on the Axes limits. Matplotlib’s origin and extent guide (3.10.7) explains how these settings combine.

- Check the
originargument orrcParams["image.origin"]. - Check the
extentvalues that map the image into data coordinates. - Inspect the actual limits with
ax.get_ylim()before applying another inversion.
Invert the y-axis on a twinx plot
ax_left.twinx() creates another Axes that shares the x-axis but has an independent y-axis, usually displayed on the right. Apply the reversal to the Axes object for the scale you intend to change:
ax_right = ax_left.twinx()
ax_right.set_ylim(100, 0) # reverses the right-side y-axisIf the left and right scales have different ranges, set each range independently. Matplotlib’s twinx API reference (3.11.2) documents the shared x-axis and separate y-axis behavior.

What changes when subplots share y
With sharey, Matplotlib synchronizes the view limits between the shared Axes. Changing the y-limits on one therefore affects the others in that shared group; it is not the same arrangement as twinx(), where the y-axes are independent. See Matplotlib’s Shared axis example (3.10.6).
