Run visual tests on every pull request by adding a GitHub Actions workflow in .github/workflows. The job should check out the code, install the project dependencies and browser binaries, run the visual suite, and upload its report and failure screenshots. Keep the rendering environment aligned with the one used to create baselines, then decide whether a changed screenshot should fail the check or wait for human review.
Choose where screenshot comparison happens
The right integration depends on whether you want to own screenshot baselines in your test suite or use a hosted review workflow.
| Approach | Best fit | Baseline and review workflow |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright screenshot assertions in GitHub Actions | Teams already running browser tests with Playwright | Comparison stays with the test suite; your team manages baselines and can retain reports and failure output as workflow artifacts. See Playwright CI documentation. |
| Chromatic with GitHub Actions | Storybook-centered teams, or teams using Chromatic’s Playwright integration for end-to-end states | Chromatic documents hosted visual review and pull-request status reporting. Store the project token as a GitHub repository secret. See Chromatic GitHub Actions, Chromatic for Playwright, and Chromatic CI. |
| Percy with Playwright | Teams that want to send Playwright snapshots to hosted Percy review | Use the Percy CLI with a project token, or evaluate its documented screenshot-assertion integration and version requirements. See the Percy Playwright client. |
These options overlap, but they are not identical. Choose based on framework fit, who owns baselines, how reviewers inspect diffs, environment control, CI gating, and required service configuration. The documentation cited above describes integrations; it does not establish comparative pricing.
Add a Playwright visual test
For an existing Playwright project, a screenshot assertion can capture a page and compare it with a stored baseline. For example, add a test such as this to your Playwright test suite:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('homepage matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png', { fullPage: true });
});
Replace the example URL with a page your test environment can reliably reach. The first run may need to create or update the expected screenshot according to your team’s baseline process; review a new baseline rather than accepting it automatically. Keep test data and page state stable so a real interface change is distinguishable from incidental content.
Run the suite on pull requests with GitHub Actions
Create a YAML workflow under .github/workflows. This example follows the Playwright CI pattern: install Node dependencies from the lockfile, install Playwright browsers and system dependencies, run tests, and upload the HTML report even when a test fails.

The action tags and Node version above are example configuration choices, not claims about the latest releases. Pin third-party actions according to your security and update policy. GitHub workflow files respond to repository events such as pull requests and run jobs on runners or in containers; see the GitHub Actions overview. Playwright’s official CI guidance includes checkout, Node setup, dependency and browser installation, test execution, and artifact upload: Playwright CI documentation.
Use only the trigger you need
pull_requestruns proposed changes before merge and is the usual choice for pre-merge visual feedback.- Add a
pushtrigger for a branch or mainline if you also want a post-merge run. The example runs on pushes tomain.
Retain useful failure evidence
Upload the HTML report and, if your test configuration produces them, screenshots and trace or failure output. Set artifact retention to match the time your team needs to debug a change and any applicable retention policy; the example uses 14 days as a configurable value, not a universal requirement.

Keep CI screenshots reproducible
A screenshot diff can reflect rendering-environment drift rather than a UI regression. Align the environment used for baselines and CI as closely as practical:
- Operating system and browser build.
- Installed fonts and other rendering dependencies.
- Viewport size and device scale factor.
- Test data, authentication state, and other page inputs.
- Timing and loading behavior for dynamic or lazy content.
Playwright discusses containers as a way to avoid installing dependencies on the host and to keep screenshot testing consistent across operating systems. See Playwright CI documentation. A container can reduce environment variation, but it does not make unstable test data or dynamic page content deterministic by itself.

Choose how visual changes affect merging
Set the policy before making the workflow a required check. A visual change may be treated as a failing test, routed through a hosted review-and-approval process, or reported without blocking a merge. Tell contributors how to inspect and approve intentional changes, and ensure the check’s result matches that policy.
- Fail immediately: useful when an unexpected diff should stop the merge; the owner must provide a clear baseline update process.
- Require review: suits teams that want a person to inspect visual diffs before accepting changes. Chromatic documents pull-request status checks; its CI result behavior depends on enabled features and configuration.
- Inform only: useful during rollout, but does not itself prevent an unintended visual change from merging.
Percy documents an optional fail-on-changes gate for its Playwright drop-in reporter. Check the integration’s version requirements and configuration before relying on that behavior; see the Percy Playwright client.

Configure hosted review services safely
Chromatic
For a GitHub Actions workflow, pass the Chromatic project token from a repository secret rather than writing it into the workflow or source code. Chromatic documents both GitHub Actions usage and a Playwright integration that extends Playwright’s test and expect utilities: GitHub Actions and Playwright.
Percy
Percy’s Playwright client documents sending snapshots through its CLI with a project token, as well as a screenshot-assertion integration. Put credentials in GitHub secrets and follow the client’s documented version requirements: Percy Playwright client.
Troubleshoot common CI failures
- Browser executable or system dependency missing: ensure the job installs browsers and required dependencies before running tests, for example with
npx playwright install --with-deps. - Many screenshots differ only in CI: compare OS, browser, fonts, viewport, device scale factor, and test data with the baseline environment. Consider a consistent containerized environment.
- The workflow passes locally but fails on pull requests: inspect the job log and uploaded report, then check whether the runner can reach the target page and whether the test depends on local state or secrets unavailable to that workflow.
- The report is missing after a failed test: make artifact upload run after test failure, such as with an appropriate conditional, and confirm the configured report path matches the test runner output.
- A hosted review check does not appear or block as expected: verify the project is linked to the repository, the token is available as a secret, the service configuration enables the desired status or gate, and the workflow uses the documented integration version.
- Action updates create unexpected workflow changes: make the action versioning policy explicit. Chromatic documents use of
@latest, major-version tags, or exact versions; choose according to your team’s update and security practice.

If your goal is to capture a URL in a CI check or supporting workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. It is not a replacement for Playwright’s baseline assertions or a hosted visual-diff review workflow; use it where a direct capture is what you need.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners are accepted and more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot, page-information, and PDF-capture tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use GitHub Actions with a visual-testing service instead of managing all comparisons in Playwright?
Yes. Chromatic documents GitHub Actions and Playwright integrations, while Percy documents a Playwright client for hosted snapshot review. Select the workflow based on how your team wants to manage baselines and review diffs.
Should visual tests run on every push or only on pull requests?
Use pull-request runs for pre-merge feedback. Add push runs when you also need post-merge verification.
