Give each coding agent its own branch and Git worktree, then route every change through one integration path. Test the assembled changes together and deploy only the artifact you intended. A branch passing on its own is not evidence that the combined release is safe.

Why parallel agent branches need a single integration point

Separate worktrees let agents edit different checkouts without competing over one working directory. They do not prevent integration conflicts: independently passing branches can still break when combined, and simultaneous pushes to a deployment branch can race.

The practical pattern is to keep execution parallel but serialize integration. Each agent commits its task-specific change; one runner or designated integrator assembles changes against the target base, runs checks on the combined result, and controls any push or deploy. The mergetrain project describes this as separate worktree lanes feeding a single integration queue, with the runner owning merge, tests, push, and verification. This is its documented design, not a universal standard (mergetrain on PyPI).

Set up isolated work and define who can push

  1. Create one branch and worktree per task. Keep each agent’s edits isolated—for example, assign a health check, a config-loading refactor, and a flaky-test fix to separate branches rather than sharing a checkout.
  2. Require a commit before integration. A runner needs a stable change to apply and test. In mergetrain’s documented policy, agents commit before enqueueing and do not push deployment refs directly.
  3. Name one integration owner. Use a runner or human integrator to apply branches in order to a fresh worktree based on the intended target branch. Do not let each agent independently race to update the shared deployment ref.
  4. Make deployment intent explicit. Separate “integrate and test” from “deploy.” Mergetrain documents --deploy for a deploy request and reserves unattended processing for pre-approved --auto jobs; those are project-specific command semantics, not Git conventions.

Choose a local queue or a PR-first workflow

The right integration path depends on how much human review, hosted CI, and operational control the team needs.

Decision point Local integration queue PR-first workflow
Review and audit Can reduce ceremony for trusted, small changes; review may be less granular unless the team adds its own process. Individual pull requests support separate discussion, approvals, and durable review history.
Where checks run The documented mergetrain queue runs configured gates on the assembled train before its atomic push. Typically uses hosted CI per pull request and may use forge-native merge-group checks.
Operational ownership The operator owns the runner, credentials, gate commands, and branch policy. Relies on forge settings, branch rules, webhooks, and hosted CI.
Failure diagnosis Mergetrain says its runner can bisect a failing train and report a conflicting pair; this is a project feature claim, not an independent benchmark. Failure isolation generally follows the individual PR and CI workflow configured by the team.

A hybrid can work: validate the combined train locally, push a review branch, and open one PR—or keep individual PRs for changes that need separate human discussion. Mergetrain documents these options, but the choice should follow the team’s review and release policy rather than a claim that one approach is universally faster (mergetrain on PyPI).

Test the combined train, not just each branch

After the runner applies the queued commits to the target base, run the gates against that assembled result. At minimum, select checks that cover the affected code and the build or deployment artifact; the exact commands depend on the repository and are not specified by the cited project description.

  • If the train fails, stop before pushing or deploying. Identify the change or interaction responsible, repair or remove that branch, then rerun the gates on the revised combined result.
  • Do not treat green statuses on isolated branches as a substitute for testing their combined state.
  • Keep the target base current enough that the integration result represents what will actually be released.

Mergetrain reports 20 landed trains at a 100% land rate on its PyPI page, for the current release identified there as v1.2.0. That is the project publisher’s own report about its repository, including planned gate/conflict recovery and a fault-injected git push --atomic recovery case. It is implementation evidence, not an independent benchmark or a general reliability rate (mergetrain on PyPI).

Verify the intended artifact and the running service

A green pipeline can still ship the wrong source or leave a service unusable. Verify that the artifact being deployed was built from the intended integrated commit and canonical source, then check the service after deployment using meaningful application-level signals as well as logs.

In an account published on July 18, 2026, Andrei Solovev describes shipping from an unsynced feature branch and a separate outage involving a failing pre-deploy backup probe. The probe passed a PostgreSQL connection-string parameter accepted by one driver but rejected by a libpq-based tool, which stopped dependent services. The author also calls the post-deploy HTTP probes shallow. These are lessons from one implementation, not evidence that the same pipeline or failure mode applies to every deployment (Andrei Solovev’s deployment account).

That implementation uses a dedicated scrubbed deployment mirror, machine authentication to a vault for secrets, and checks tying the deployed artifact to canonical source. These are the author’s choices, not universal requirements. The article also notes the maintenance cost of its API client, scrub-and-vendor step, and generator discipline; for a single app, a managed platform’s deterministic pipeline may be the simpler fit. For any setup, inspect primary service logs and verify the actual running release rather than relying on a successful deploy status alone.

Keep agent roles and tooling claims in perspective

Teams may assign agents different responsibilities, but there is no established ranking here showing one coding agent is objectively best for a given class of task. A Chaossynergy ADR dated July 13, 2026, proposes Hermes as orchestrator, with OpenCode, Pi, and Claude Code as optional specialists. It suggests OpenCode for feature implementation and review, Pi for custom workflows and extensions, and Claude Code for research or complex logic. The ADR is explicitly marked “Draft — design direction, not yet implemented,” so treat it as one project’s proposal, not a verified comparison (Chaossynergy ADR-012).

The same draft proposes isolated distrobox containers and user-initiated installation, and flags agent proliferation, differing Node.js versions, provider credentials, and filesystem-state divergence as project-specific risks. The broader operational lesson is to make isolation, credentials, and runtime assumptions explicit rather than assuming that parallel sessions are interchangeable.

A compact release checklist

  • Each agent has a task-specific branch and separate worktree.
  • Each change is committed before it enters the integration path.
  • Only the designated runner or integrator updates the shared release path.
  • Required tests and gates pass on the assembled train.
  • The deployment request identifies the intended artifact and source revision.
  • Post-deploy checks confirm service behavior and logs, not only pipeline status.
