To integrate qTest with test automation, choose where tests will run: on qTest-managed Automation Host machines, in Jenkins or Bamboo, or in a custom runner connected through Universal Agent or qTest APIs. Enable Automation Integration for the target project and map the automation system’s result statuses to qTest statuses before sending results. The key distinction: Jenkins and Bamboo integrations collect test results produced by CI; they do not execute the tests.
Choose the integration pattern that fits your execution workflow
Decide first which system should own test execution. That choice determines where tests run, how results are produced, and what you must configure in qTest.
| Route | Where tests execute | Best fit | Key considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| qTest scheduling / Launch | Machines with registered Automation Host software and agents | Teams that want to schedule automation and review jobs through qTest | Activate project integration, map statuses, register the host and agent, then create and schedule test runs. Supported frameworks and integrations depend on the agent. |
| Jenkins or Bamboo integration | Inside the CI server’s build | Teams already running tests in CI that need results associated with qTest | The qTest plugin collects results; it is not a test runner. The documented report format is JUnit XML. |
| Universal Agent | In a scripted workflow on an agent host | Teams with custom or varied frameworks and explicit setup, checkout, execution, and reporting steps | Universal Agent is available with Automation Host 2.1.0 or later. Check the current agent instructions and parser support for your deployment. |
| qTest APIs | In an external system or custom integration | Teams needing bespoke result submission or integration logic | Enable project Automation Integration, use HTTPS API requests, and handle authentication and status mappings. |
Compare the options by execution ownership, report format and parser, status mapping, framework support, scheduling needs, permissions, deployment model, and license entitlement. Do not assume every integration is available with every qTest package or deployment. Tricentis documentation describes Tosca DEX as the native Tosca execution route in Launch; non-Tosca runs are distributed across selected agents. See Tricentis qTest and the deployment-specific documentation available to your organization.
Prepare qTest Automation Settings
Enable automation integration and map statuses before connecting an execution system. A test runner may use states such as passed, failed, skipped, or framework-specific outcomes; map each state to the intended qTest Manager status rather than assuming the names or meanings match.

- Open the target qTest project’s Automation Settings.
- Activate Automation Integration.
- Map the external system’s result statuses to qTest Manager statuses, including any skipped or custom states used by your framework.
- Save the settings and confirm the changes in the project.
Project Admin permission is required to configure these settings. For CI integrations, enabling CI Tool Integration also activates Automation Integration, so configure the status mapping there as well. Tricentis describes the setting and permissions in its Automation Settings documentation. Exact labels or UI placement can vary by qTest release and SaaS versus on-premises deployment; use documentation matching your instance.
Run tests on qTest-managed Automation Hosts
Use this pattern when qTest should schedule automation on registered machines and receive the resulting logs and statuses. Automation agents poll for scheduled work, execute it on their host, and report back to qTest Manager.

- Install and start qTest Automation Host on each machine where tests will run. A running host registers with qTest.
- In qTest Launch, create an Automation Agent and select an agent or framework workflow supported by your environment. Use Universal Agent when you need a custom scripted workflow.
- In qTest Manager, create the automation test runs and associate them with the intended project, release, and test cycle.
- Schedule the runs. The agent polls the schedule, executes the automation, and returns logs and results to qTest Manager.
- Review the schedule status and execution logs in the relevant qTest scheduling or Launch views. Confirm that the results landed in the intended project, release, and test cycle, and that each status was mapped correctly.
Tricentis’s Test Automation Scheduling Quick Start Guide covers the host-and-agent workflow for qTest SaaS. Launch availability and package entitlement can vary: a Tricentis Launch quick start identifies Elite as the required package in that guide, so verify entitlement against your current contract and deployment before planning around it.
Send Jenkins or Bamboo test results to qTest
Keep execution in the CI job. The qTest integration plugin reads the results that the build produces and submits them to qTest; installing a plugin does not cause qTest to run the tests.

- For every qTest project receiving CI results, activate CI Tool Integration and map the CI result statuses to qTest values.
- Install the appropriate qTest integration plugin in Jenkins or Bamboo and configure its connection to the intended qTest project.
- Obtain the relevant integration or API token from qTest resources. Store it in Jenkins or Bamboo’s credential-management feature, not directly in a build script or source repository.
- Configure the CI job to publish its test results in JUnit XML, the documented format for the qTest Jenkins and Bamboo integrations.
- Run a representative build, then check qTest Manager for the expected test runs, statuses, and logs.
If a Jenkins test framework does not produce JUnit XML, Jenkins users can use the xUnit plugin to publish JUnit XML-compatible results. The documented qTest Bamboo plugin does not support Bamboo Specs. Tricentis explains these plugin boundaries and setup in its Jenkins and Bamboo Integration documentation.
One credential detail can break an otherwise unchanged pipeline: Tricentis says tokens used for qTest API, Jenkins, and Bamboo integrations automatically expire when the user’s password is reset. After a reset, verify or re-add the applicable credential and run a test build. See Download qTest Resources.

Connect a custom framework with Universal Agent or APIs
Universal Agent for scripted execution
Universal Agent is the flexible choice when the workflow needs explicit environment preparation or custom framework steps. The documented sequence is to prepare the environment, obtain the source code, execute the tests, and submit results to qTest Manager. It requires Automation Host 2.1.0 or later. Consult Tricentis’s Universal Agent Overview for agent creation, framework integration, code examples, parser guidance, and custom parser development. Validate the parser and agent instructions for the specific framework and qTest deployment you use.
Direct qTest API integration
Use the API route when an external runner or service needs custom control over result submission. qTest resources are addressed through HTTPS request URIs using standard request methods, headers, and bodies. External applications authenticate with a qTest authentication token. Automation API parameters are invalid if Automation Settings are disabled, so enable project Automation Integration and configure status mappings first.

Before implementation, check the API specification for the qTest release and deployment you target; SaaS and on-premises documentation can differ. Tricentis publishes the relevant details in its qTest API Specifications.
Troubleshoot missing or incorrect automation results
- No results reach qTest: Verify that the project’s Automation Integration or CI Tool Integration is enabled, the integration points at the intended project, and the token is valid. For APIs, confirm the request uses the documented HTTPS endpoint and authentication method.
- Results are rejected or show the wrong status: Check that the source report has the expected structure and that every source status, including skipped or custom outcomes, is mapped to a qTest status.
- Jenkins or Bamboo completes but qTest has no test results: Confirm that the build publishes JUnit XML and that the qTest plugin is configured to collect the produced report. The plugin collects CI results; it does not launch the test framework.
- Jenkins framework does not emit JUnit XML: Configure Jenkins xUnit to publish a compatible JUnit XML report, then verify that the qTest integration can collect it.
- Scheduled test does not run: Check that Automation Host is installed and running, registered with qTest, and associated with an agent capable of the selected framework workflow. Review the schedule and agent logs.
- Universal Agent workflow fails: Confirm Automation Host is version 2.1.0 or later, then inspect environment setup, source checkout, execution, and result-submission steps against the current parser instructions.
- Authentication stopped after a password reset: Revalidate and, if necessary, re-add the API, Jenkins, or Bamboo token; Tricentis says these tokens automatically expire on password reset.
- Instructions do not match your menus or available features: Check whether your instance is SaaS or on-premises, confirm its qTest release, and verify package entitlement for Launch before following a guide written for another deployment.
