Connect tests to Pivotal Tracker by choosing the direction of information flow: use the Tracker API when a test system needs to find, create, or update stories; use Tracker webhooks when another system needs to receive Tracker activity; and use source-commit integration when commits should be associated with stories or change their state. These are distinct integration paths—not evidence that Tracker automatically ingests test results on its own.

Choose the right integration for your testing workflow

First decide which system owns each event: where tests run, where failures are recorded, and who is allowed to create or update Tracker stories. Then choose the integration surface that matches that flow.

Approach Data flow Best fit Traceability
Tracker API Testing system to Tracker Find stories, create stories, or add activity when test workflow rules call for it Test failure or event to story/comment
Tracker webhooks or activity polling Tracker to testing or automation system React to changes made in Tracker Tracker activity to external event handling
Source-commit integration Source control to Tracker Attach commits to stories and, if requested, change story state Commit to story
PractiTest integration described in vendor collateral Test management and Tracker Teams seeking requirement-to-test links as well as test-run links Requirements to tests and Tracker stories; verify current availability before adoption

The Tracker API material is presented in LiteTracker help documentation, rather than a currently verified canonical Pivotal Tracker documentation host. The behaviors below reflect that material; confirm them against the Tracker service and permissions in your environment before deploying.

Send test results to Tracker with its API

The API supports retrieving and creating stories. A test workflow can search for a relevant story, then create one when the team’s triage rules say to. The API material also describes activity/comment operations. It does not prescribe how to deduplicate failures or decide which failures merit new stories: those are choices your team must make.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Define failure handling before writing the integration

  • Choose whether a qualifying failure creates a story, updates an existing story, or adds a comment to an existing story.
  • Specify how the workflow identifies an existing issue—for example, using a stable test identifier or a team-defined failure key.
  • Decide what passing tests do. Usually they should not create work items, but the correct behavior depends on your process.
  • Use a dedicated automation identity with only the access required in the relevant projects.

Build the API workflow

  1. Authenticate API requests using a token associated with an authorized Tracker user. Store the token in your CI or integration secret store, not in source code.
  2. Query the project stories endpoint with a filter to locate candidate stories. Tracker story filters follow the same search-string conventions as the Tracker UI, so test the filter there first.
  3. Apply your own matching and deduplication rules. A search result is not, by itself, a guarantee that a failure corresponds to the right story.
  4. If the workflow calls for a new issue, POST a story using the API’s documented JSON structure. If an existing story should be annotated, use the documented activity/comment operation instead.
  5. Record the API response and the test-run identifier in your integration logs, while avoiding sensitive test data or credentials.

Consult the Tracker API material for current endpoint paths, request fields, and authentication details before implementing requests. Permissions follow the authenticated user’s relationship to the project: the documentation says a Viewer may fetch project resources but cannot modify them, while project settings and integrations can be modified only by an Owner.

Keep the API client resilient

  • Ignore unknown response attributes so additive response changes do not break your client; the API documentation says new response keys may be added without a version increase.
  • Handle authentication and authorization failures as configuration errors. Do not retry them indefinitely.
  • Make create operations idempotent at the workflow level where possible. Tracker’s API capability does not automatically deduplicate repeated test notifications.
  • Log enough context to diagnose a failed request, such as project, test-run ID, response status, and a redacted error body.

Receive Tracker changes with webhooks or activity polling

Use this path when the testing or automation system needs to react to Tracker changes. The API material says Tracker can POST JSON activity structures to a URL you supply; activity endpoints can also be polled.

Webhook receiver considerations

Build a receiver that validates incoming requests according to the service’s available controls, accepts the documented JSON structure, and quickly acknowledges deliveries before doing slow test-management work asynchronously. Design for retries, duplicate events, and out-of-order processing as prudent reliability safeguards; these behaviors should not be mistaken for guarantees established by the cited documentation.

Polling activity safely

Activity endpoints return events in reverse chronological order. If new activity arrives while you read multiple pages, use project version information to avoid processing overlapping activity twice. Track a durable checkpoint and make downstream processing idempotent so a restart does not create duplicate test records or comments.

Link commits to stories and control state changes

Tracker’s source-commit endpoint supports SCM post-commit hooks. The API documentation states: “The Pivotal Tracker API supports integration with post-commit hooks of Source Control Management (SCM) systems such as Git, Subversion, etc.” A commit message can identify one or more stories with bracketed story references and can optionally request a state change.

Use GitLab’s documented Tracker integration

GitLab documents an integration that adds matching commit messages as comments on Tracker stories and can close stories using specified verbs. Configure it with a Tracker API token and, if appropriate, restrict which branches trigger the integration. GitLab settings also expose a “Test settings” action. See GitLab’s Pivotal Tracker integration documentation for configuration steps and current behavior.

Agree on story references and closing verbs

GitLab gives [#555] as an example of the square-bracketed story-ID format. It lists fix, fixed, fixes, complete, completes, completed, finish, finished, finishes, and delivers as words that can close a story when used with a story reference. Agree on a convention and test it in a non-production project: generated commit messages can trigger state changes as well as comments.

The Tracker source-commit documentation describes a pair of square brackets containing one or more # story IDs, with an optional state change. Ensure the source-control identity used for automation is a member of every project it may affect and has the necessary access.

Link requirements and test cases with a test-management tool

PractiTest’s vendor sheet, copyrighted 2022, describes creating Tracker stories from test runs, importing Tracker stories as requirements, and linking requirements to tests. That dated collateral does not establish that the integration is available today. Verify current support, setup instructions, and plan requirements with the vendor before making it part of a new workflow. This option is relevant when you need requirement-to-test traceability, not only a commit or failure linked to a story.

Secure permissions and validate end to end

Limit automation authority

  • Use a dedicated service identity and grant access only to the projects involved.
  • Confirm that the identity can perform each action your workflow needs: read stories, create or modify stories, add comments, or change state.
  • Keep tokens in your CI or integration secret store and rotate them under your organization’s normal credential policy.
  • For source-commit automation, ensure the source-control user is a member of affected projects.

Test each event path in a non-production project

  1. Run a passing test and check that it creates no unintended Tracker work item.
  2. Run a qualifying failure and verify the expected story, update, or comment.
  3. Replay the same notification and check that your deduplication behavior prevents duplicate work.
  4. Make a commit with a story reference and confirm the expected comment appears.
  5. Test a state-changing verb separately and verify that only the intended story state changes.
  6. If using branch restrictions, test both an allowed and a restricted branch.
  7. For webhooks or polling, verify that your receiver can recover from a restart without losing or repeatedly applying activity.

Do not assume an integration works in your organization until you have tested it with the actual project membership, token, branch rules, and event payloads.

Troubleshoot common integration failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
API reads succeed but story creation or comments fail The authenticated user lacks write access or project membership Check the user’s project role and whether it may perform the requested operation.
A filter returns the wrong stories or none The API filter does not match Tracker UI search conventions or project scope Try the same search string in Tracker and verify the project endpoint and filter.
Repeated failures create duplicate stories The test workflow creates a story for each delivery without matching existing work Define a stable failure key and deduplication behavior before creating a story.
Commit appears without a story comment Reference syntax, token, project membership, or integration settings are wrong Check the bracketed story ID, configured token, project access, and GitLab settings; use its “Test settings” action.
A story closes unexpectedly A closing verb was used with a recognized story reference Review generated commit messages and reserve state-changing words for intentional transitions.
Polling processes an activity twice Pages overlapped while new activity was arriving, or the consumer resumed without a checkpoint Track project version information and make processing idempotent.
Webhook receiver misses or mishandles events The endpoint is unavailable, slow, or not robust to duplicate or unordered input Inspect receiver logs and delivery handling; queue work, persist checkpoints, and make processing safe to repeat.

Or skip the browser setup

If your workflow also needs screenshots of pages involved in a test failure, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It is a separate capture service, not a Tracker integration: your test workflow still decides how to attach or reference the result in a story.

For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Pivotal Tracker natively receive automated test results?

The documented API supports workflows that retrieve or create stories, but that does not establish automatic test-result ingestion by Tracker itself. A test system must implement the behavior it needs.

Can commits update Pivotal Tracker stories?

Yes. Tracker’s source-commit integration and GitLab’s documented integration can associate commits with stories; recognized closing verbs can also change story state.

How can I link test cases to Tracker stories?

The 2022 PractiTest vendor sheet describes importing Tracker stories as requirements and linking requirements to tests, but it does not confirm that the integration remains available. Verify current support with PractiTest.
