The example is for testing and demonstration—not a production-ready application—and ONLYOFFICE warns not to run it on a server without proper code modifications.
Choose the right integration method
For a conventional Python web app that opens and manages editors, the usual starting point is the ONLYOFFICE Docs API. It lets an application embed and configure document, spreadsheet, presentation, form, and PDF editors. The Docs API overview and its basic concepts explain that integration model.
Use the Docs API to embed editors
The official Python example demonstrates integrating Docs into a Python web application. It offers Docker and local-machine setup paths. Treat it as a working reference for configuration and editor integration, not as an application you can safely expose unchanged.
Use WOPI when you are building a WOPI host
WOPI is a separate REST-based integration route. It is appropriate when your application is implementing a WOPI host or its storage architecture already uses that protocol. The host must support the operations required for the workflow, such as CheckFileInfo, GetFile, Lock, RefreshLock, Unlock, PutFile, and RenameFile. The overview describes discovery XML, proof-key verification, and enabling WOPI in Docs configuration; ONLYOFFICE documents WOPI support starting with Docs 6.4.

Do not confuse DocSpace SDK with editor embedding
The Python SDK for DocSpace is for programmatic access to DocSpace features and documents. Its Python 3.9+ requirement and bearer-token setup describe that separate API use case; they are not instructions for embedding Docs editors in a Python web app.
Set up the Python example and network paths
The official example page describes both Docker and local setup. For its local route, the page lists Python 3.11.4 and pip 23.1.2. Those are the versions stated for that example, not a universal minimum for every ONLYOFFICE Docs release or Python integration.
Configuration involves the Python application URL, Document Server URLs (including separate private and public addresses in the example), and a JWT secret. Replace sample hostnames and placeholder addresses with actual endpoints. The integration FAQ specifically says to replace https://documentserver/ with the address of the installed Document Server.

Reachability is required in both directions. The browser needs to load the editor from Docs, the Python application must be able to make the required Docs requests, and Docs must be able to reach the application’s file and callback endpoints. When the services are on different machines, configure addresses each service can actually access rather than relying on example-only hostnames.
- Check DNS resolution and firewall rules for every configured endpoint.
- Verify that the app can reach the configured Document Server address.
- Verify that Document Server can reach the app’s file and save-callback endpoints.
- Confirm the browser can load the editor using the public address intended for users.
Harden the demonstration before production
The Python example page explicitly warns: “DO NOT use this integration example on your own server without proper code modifications.” It identifies missing storage authorization, checks against substituted link parameters, validation of save requests, and restrictions on use from other sites. These gaps make the example unsuitable for a public deployment without application-specific protections.
Authorize files in your application
Authenticate users and enforce authorization for each file operation. Do not treat a file identifier, URL, or editor configuration supplied by a browser as proof that a user may access that file. Validate identifiers against the signed-in user’s permissions, and prevent parameter substitution from turning a valid link into access to another document.

Validate save callbacks and restrict their callers
Validate callback data and the file it refers to before accepting a save. Ensure only the intended Docs service can invoke the save endpoint, and reject malformed or unauthorized requests. The sample’s own warning about unchecked save requests and cross-site use makes these application responsibilities explicit.
Configure JWT and protect the secret
ONLYOFFICE uses JSON Web Tokens (JWT) signed with a secret shared by the integrator and Docs. Tokens are used when initializing the editor and in service exchanges; requests with missing or invalid tokens can be rejected. Keep the secret on the server side, never expose it in browser code, and ensure the app and Docs use the same intended secret and token flow. See ONLYOFFICE’s security documentation.
JWT is enabled by default starting with Docs 7.2, according to the JWT configuration guide. Configuration differs by version and deployment: Docker users should configure JWT through environment variables and recreate the container for changes to take effect. Check the instructions for the deployed version rather than copying settings intended for another release.

Apply WOPI-specific protections when using WOPI
A WOPI host has additional protocol responsibilities. Implement the operations needed for the chosen workflow, handle discovery, restrict accepted integrator IP addresses using the documented allow-list or filter, and verify request signatures with WOPI proof keys. The WOPI overview describes configuration in local.json, recommends changing local.json rather than default.json, and shows WOPI being enabled explicitly. Check the defaults and configuration for your deployed Docs version.
Choose a deployment and integration contract
Docker, a local installation, or hosted Docs are deployment choices; Docs API and WOPI are integration contracts. Decide which combination fits your application, then verify that the browser, Python service, and Docs service can reach the endpoints their roles require.

Troubleshoot common integration failures
The editor or callback cannot reach a service
Check the configured public and private URLs, DNS, firewalls, and routing from each service’s point of view. A hostname that resolves on the developer’s machine may not resolve from the Docs container or server.

The sample still uses a placeholder URL
Replace https://documentserver/ and any other sample hostnames with the actual Document Server address for the relevant network path. Confirm both the browser-facing URL and service-to-service address are valid in your deployment.
Requests fail JWT validation
Check that the integrator and Docs use the same secret, that the configured token flow matches the Docs version, and that Docker environment-variable changes were applied by recreating the container. Do not solve a token failure by exposing the secret to client-side code.
WOPI opens a file but operations fail
Confirm that the host implements the operations required by the workflow, that discovery is handled, that WOPI is enabled as intended, and that proof-key validation and accepted integrator IP restrictions are configured.
The Python SDK does not embed an editor
Check whether the task is actually DocSpace automation or Docs editor embedding. The DocSpace Python SDK covers the former; use the Docs API or WOPI integration model for the latter.
