If you want an AI client such as Claude or Cursor to run actions in your Zapier-connected apps, use Zapier MCP. If you want a Zapier workflow to call tools hosted by another MCP server, add Zapier’s separate MCP Client integration. They have different setup steps, transports, authentication, and maturity levels, so choose the direction of the call before configuring anything.
This guide covers both paths, how to test them, the current task and sharing rules documented by Zapier, and the common failure modes.
Choose the integration that matches your goal
| Question | Use | What is exposed | Transport documented by Zapier | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Should my AI assistant perform actions in apps connected to Zapier? | Zapier MCP | The Zapier actions and tools you configure | Streamable HTTP (not SSE) | Regular Zapier MCP service |
| Should a Zap call tools hosted by an external MCP server? | MCP Client by Zapier | Tools provided by that remote server | Streamable HTTP or SSE | Beta |
Zapier’s Help Center article updated September 8, 2026 describes MCP as an open standard for connecting MCP clients to outside tools and data. The two products above implement opposite directions: in the first, the AI client calls Zapier; in the second, Zapier calls a remote server.
Route 1: Let an AI client use Zapier actions
What you need
- A Zapier account.
- An MCP-compatible client (for example, an AI desktop client or coding client that supports MCP connections).
- At least one app connected to your Zapier account.
- Permission to create and configure a Zapier MCP server.
Create and configure the Zapier MCP server
- Open Zapier’s MCP setup at mcp.zapier.com and create a server.
- Choose your AI client. If it is not listed, choose Other.
- Add only the app actions you expect the client to use. Each enabled tool represents an action in a connected Zapier app.
- Complete any required action fields, then connect and authenticate the relevant app account when prompted.
- Copy the connection instructions shown for the selected client and add the Zapier MCP connection in that client.
- Ask the client to list its available tools. Run a harmless test action, such as creating a draft or retrieving a record, before allowing production changes.
Dynamic versus fixed tool access
Zapier documents a dynamic mode that can discover and enable tools as needed, alongside a fixed set for more tightly scoped access. Dynamic access is convenient when the task set changes; a fixed set is easier to audit and limits what the AI client can invoke. Whichever mode you choose, expose the smallest useful set of actions and review each action’s required fields.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Test and secure the connection
- Have the client enumerate tools and confirm names match the actions you selected.
- Test with non-destructive data first, then inspect the resulting app record.
- Do not enable write, delete, or send actions unless the client and its account are authorized to perform them.
- Keep the MCP endpoint and client credentials private. Revoke or recreate the connection if they are exposed.
Route 2: Call a remote MCP server from a Zapier workflow
What this route does
MCP Client by Zapier lets a Zap use tools hosted by a remote MCP server. It does not connect to Zapier’s own MCP servers, and Zapier labels the integration beta. The remote server determines its own URL, supported transport, scopes, and credential requirements.
Add the MCP Client connection
- In Zapier, add an app connection and select MCP Client.
- Enter the remote MCP server URL supplied by that server’s operator.
- Choose Streamable HTTP or SSE, matching the server’s documented support.
- Select OAuth when the server requires an OAuth authorization flow. If it documents token authentication instead, provide the bearer token in the appropriate field.
- Continue through Zapier’s MCP Client authorization flow.
- Sign in to the remote server and grant the requested scopes if prompted.
- After the connection succeeds, add the MCP Client step to a Zap, select a tool, map inputs from earlier steps, and test the step with safe data.
Connect only to servers you trust. A remote tool can receive the data you map into the step, so review the server’s privacy policy, scopes, and retention practices before authorizing it.
If the connection is not available in the editor
Refresh the Zap editor after creating the connection. If Zapier immediately asks you to reconnect, verify that the OAuth permissions were granted and that the selected transport exactly matches what the remote server supports. An SSE-only server cannot be configured as Streamable HTTP, and the reverse is also true.
Authentication and transport decisions
Streamable HTTP
Zapier MCP documents Streamable HTTP as its transport. Use the endpoint and client instructions generated for your chosen AI client; do not substitute an SSE endpoint.

SSE
The beta MCP Client integration supports SSE as well as Streamable HTTP when the remote server offers it. SSE is a server-sent event connection, so the remote server must explicitly document an SSE endpoint and any required headers.
OAuth or bearer token
Use OAuth when the remote server presents an authorization flow and needs delegated scopes. Use a bearer token only when the server’s documentation specifies token authentication. Never paste a token into a prompt or expose it in a Zap step output. Rotate a token if it appears in task history or logs.
Build a reliable test plan
- Discovery: list tools and verify that every expected action appears.
- Validation: supply required fields with a test record or draft destination.
- Authorization: confirm the connected account has permission for the target app or remote server tool.
- Execution: run one action and inspect the external result.
- Failure handling: decide whether a failed call should stop the Zap, retry, or route to an alerting step.
- Least privilege: remove tools and scopes that the workflow or AI client does not need.
Limits, plans, and changing product details
Zapier’s September 8, 2026 Help Center article says Zapier MCP is included with existing Zapier plans and has no separate MCP charge. It states that each successful MCP tool call consumes two Zapier tasks and that failed calls consume no tasks. Treat those terms as date-sensitive and check the current plan documentation before budgeting a production workflow.
The same article says a server is created for each client, with one server per named client. Sharing a server requires a Team or Enterprise plan, while tool-list bundles can be shared on any plan. These are plan rules from that dated article and may change.

Zapier’s Help Center article cites more than 9,000 apps and more than 40,000 actions, while another Zapier product page publishes a different action count. Catalog totals therefore depend on the page and date; do not treat either figure as a permanent, internally consistent total.
Next Gen Zaps is separate
Next Gen Zaps is an adjacent capability, not a transport choice or a requirement for MCP integration. Zapier describes it as an MCP client that can build and deploy Zaps from natural-language instructions. It is documented as early access by request, with limited availability and active development, so it should not be assumed to be generally available.
Troubleshooting
The AI client shows no Zapier tools
- Confirm the client is actually MCP-compatible and that its Zapier connection is enabled.
- Check that the server URL copied from Zapier is exact.
- Return to the Zapier MCP server configuration and verify that at least one action is enabled.
- Ask the client to refresh or re-list tools after changing the tool set.
An expected action is missing
The action may not have been added to the server, may require an app account connection, or may be hidden by a fixed tool set. Add the action, complete its required fields, authenticate the app, and reconnect or refresh the client.
A Zapier MCP call fails
- Check that the connected app account still has permission and has not expired.
- Confirm every required action field is mapped and uses the format expected by the app.
- Retry with a small, non-destructive test input.
- Remember that Zapier’s dated guidance says failed MCP calls do not consume tasks, while successful calls consume two.
The remote MCP connection loops back to authorization
Recheck the selected transport, OAuth scopes, redirect approval, and server URL. If the server supports only SSE, select SSE; if it supports only Streamable HTTP, select Streamable HTTP. Sign in to the remote server again and grant access.

The new MCP Client connection is not in the Zap editor
Refresh the editor. If it still does not appear, reopen the connection settings and verify that authorization completed successfully rather than ending at an intermediate consent screen.
A tool call is slow or times out
Reduce the input size, avoid unnecessary tool calls, and test the remote server directly according to its operator’s documentation. For a Zap, add an explicit error path or notification so a timeout is visible instead of silently producing incomplete downstream data.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an MCP server to use ordinary Zapier Zaps?
No. MCP is needed only when an MCP-compatible client or an MCP-enabled Zap must call tools through one of these integrations.
Can Zapier MCP use SSE?
Zapier’s documented Zapier MCP transport is Streamable HTTP, not SSE. SSE is listed for the separate beta MCP Client integration when the remote server supports it.
Can I connect Zapier’s own MCP server through MCP Client by Zapier?
No. Zapier documents MCP Client as a way to connect to remote servers and says it does not support connecting to Zapier’s own MCP servers.
Which integration should I use for Claude or Cursor?
Use Zapier MCP when Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client should invoke actions in your Zapier-connected apps.
