Use Make’s HTTP app to call a screenshot API, map the page URL into the request, then pass the returned image file or URL to the next module. The endpoint’s authentication, parameters and response format come from the provider, so you must configure those fields from its current documentation. This guide shows the generic HTTP pattern, a ScreenshotOne example, Make’s native ScreenshotOne app, error handling, binary-file mapping and an alternative using ScreenshotNeo.
Choose the right Make route
There are two practical ways to connect a screenshot service to Make:
| Route | Best for | What you configure | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| HTTP app | Any provider without a suitable Make integration | HTTPS endpoint, method, authentication, query or body fields, and response handling | Most flexible, but you must match the provider’s API contract exactly |
| ScreenshotOne Make app | Workflows already using ScreenshotOne | The app’s “Take a static screenshot,” “Take an animated screenshot,” or “Make an API Call” module | Less request setup; Make labels it community-developed and says developer terms or fees may apply |
Make’s HTTP app is designed for services that do not have a native integration. Its documented modules include Make a request, Download a file and Resolve URL. The app supports standard HTTP methods, headers, query parameters, several body types, and API key, Basic Auth and OAuth 2.0 choices.
Use HTTPS. Store secrets in Make’s credential controls when the selected authentication method supports them; do not publish a real key in a scenario screenshot, a shared template or a public URL.

Build the scenario step by step
1. Create a trigger that supplies the page URL
Start with the event that should cause a capture. A custom webhook is an instant trigger that receives an HTTP request. You can also use a trigger from another app, such as a record being created, provided that the trigger output contains the target page URL.
- Create a new Make scenario.
- Add your trigger module. For a webhook, choose Webhooks → Custom webhook, create the webhook and copy its URL.
- Send a sample request to the webhook, or run the trigger once from the source app, so Make learns the URL field’s data structure.
- Confirm that the mapped value is a complete URL, including
https://. If the source sometimes sends an empty value, add a filter before the HTTP request.
2. Add the HTTP request
- Click the plus icon after the trigger and choose HTTP → Make a request.
- Set the provider’s HTTPS endpoint and HTTP method. ScreenshotOne’s documented endpoint is https://api.screenshotone.com/take and accepts GET or POST.
- Map the trigger’s page URL to the provider’s required
urlparameter (or to the equivalent JSON field). Do not assume another provider uses the same name. - Add output options only when you need them. ScreenshotOne documents URL, HTML or Markdown input and output such as PNG, JPEG, WebP, PDF and text formats. Those are provider-specific options, not universal screenshot API requirements.
- Configure authentication using the provider’s instructions. ScreenshotOne documents an
access_keyin the query string, POST body orX-Access-Keyheader. Prefer a protected credential field where the provider and Make allow it.
3. Configure a GET request
A minimal ScreenshotOne-style GET request has these query parameters:
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
url |
Map the page URL from the trigger |
access_key |
Your provider key, held in Make’s credential storage where possible |
In Make’s HTTP module, add each item under Query string rather than concatenating values into a hand-written URL. This keeps URL encoding correct when the target contains its own query string.
4. Configure a POST request when options are complex
Choose POST when the provider documents a JSON request body or when many capture options make a query string difficult to maintain. Set the body type to JSON, add the provider’s required URL and options, and set Content-Type: application/json if the documentation requires it. Do not send a JSON body to an endpoint that only accepts GET unless the provider explicitly supports both.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Run once and inspect the response
Click Run once and inspect the HTTP module’s output before connecting the destination app. A screenshot API may return binary image data, a file object, JSON containing a URL, or an error document. ScreenshotOne documents binary responses for its standard image output and JSON for relevant response options; other providers can behave differently.

- If Make exposes a file object with file name, MIME type and data, map that object directly into a file-upload field in the next module.
- If the response is binary data without the file structure your destination expects, add HTTP → Download a file only when you have a URL to download. A binary response is not automatically a public URL.
- If the provider returns JSON with a hosted image URL, map that URL to a later download or image field, while checking its expiration and access requirements.
- Use the provider’s content type and requested format to give the destination an appropriate extension, such as
.png,.jpgor.webp.
6. Send the capture to the next module
Common destinations include cloud storage, a ticket, a database record or a message attachment. Map the file data, file name and MIME type separately when the destination offers separate fields. If the destination accepts only a URL, ensure the provider actually returns a stable, accessible URL; do not convert opaque binary data into a guessed link.
Handle failures deliberately
In the HTTP module, enable the option to return an error when a request returns a 4xx or 5xx status if you want the scenario to stop or follow an error route. Add an error handler when a failed capture should create an alert, mark a record for review or retry later.
Authentication errors
A 401 or 403 usually means the key is missing, placed in the wrong location, expired, restricted, or associated with the wrong account. Recheck whether the provider requires a query parameter, body field or header. Replace a key that has been exposed publicly rather than continuing to use it.
Bad request errors
A 400 response commonly indicates a missing URL, malformed URL, unsupported format or invalid option. Run the scenario once and inspect the exact error JSON. Validate the source URL before the HTTP module and remove optional fields until the smallest valid request succeeds.
Timeouts and slow pages
Dynamic pages, blocked resources and long-running scripts can exceed a provider or Make timeout. Use the provider’s documented wait controls, reduce unnecessary capture options, and route timeouts to a retry or review branch instead of treating them as image files.

HTML instead of an image
If the next module receives an error document or JSON, check the HTTP status and content type before mapping it as a file. A successful connection does not guarantee a successful screenshot.
URL encoding problems
Target pages often contain ampersands, fragments or non-ASCII characters. Put the value in Make’s query-parameter mapper or JSON field; do not paste an unencoded URL into a manually assembled query string.

Security and reliability checklist
- Use HTTPS for both Make and the screenshot provider.
- Keep API keys in Make credentials or another protected secret field supported by the provider.
- Never publish a scenario export containing a live key.
- Decide whether a failed capture should stop the scenario, retry, or create a review task.
- Record the provider’s status code and error body for troubleshooting, but avoid logging secrets or private page content.
- Test with a public, fast page first, then test authenticated pages and redirects using the provider’s documented headers, cookies or authorization features.
- Check file size and destination limits before sending full-page or PDF captures.
Performance, cost and response design
Every scenario run can consume Make operations and provider quota, so capture only when the business event requires it. Use a filter to suppress duplicate URLs, and use the provider’s caching option when an unchanged page does not need a new capture. If you need several pages, consider whether the provider offers bulk requests rather than launching many independent scenario runs.
Full-page captures and PDFs generally take longer and produce larger files than a viewport image. Store only the format your destination needs. A binary response avoids an extra download step, while a hosted URL can simplify downstream modules but may expire or require access permissions. Verify the provider’s retention and URL behavior before relying on it as permanent storage.
ScreenshotOne-specific choices
ScreenshotOne’s documented /take endpoint supports GET and POST. Its options documentation covers URL, HTML and Markdown inputs, plus PNG, JPEG, WebP, PDF and text outputs. Authentication can use the access key in a query parameter, POST body or X-Access-Key header. Its standard image response can be binary, so inspect the Make output rather than assuming a URL.

When to use HTTP versus the native app
| Choose HTTP when… | Choose the ScreenshotOne app when… |
|---|---|
| Your provider has no native Make module; you need custom headers, body fields or a different endpoint; or you want to switch providers without rebuilding the scenario structure. | You already use ScreenshotOne and its listed modules match your capture needs; you prefer task-specific fields over manual request construction. |
Whichever route you choose, the provider—not Make—defines authentication, supported options, quotas and response behavior. Recheck those details whenever the provider changes its API.

FAQ
Can Make capture a page without a native screenshot integration?
Yes. Add the HTTP app’s Make a request module and follow the selected provider’s endpoint and authentication documentation.
Does a screenshot API always return an image URL?
No. It may return binary image data, a file object or JSON. Run the module once and map the actual response type.
Should the API key go in the URL?
Only when the provider documents query-string authentication. Prefer Make’s protected credential field where compatible, and never expose a live key in shared scenarios or public links.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I trigger the screenshot from a webhook?
Yes. Use Webhooks → Custom webhook as the instant trigger, then map the webhook’s URL field into the provider request.
How do I save a binary screenshot in Make?
Inspect the HTTP module output, then map its file data, name and MIME type into the destination upload fields. Use Download a file only when you have a URL to download.
What should happen when the target page is private?
Pass the required cookies, authorization header or other credentials only through the provider’s documented secure options, and avoid logging those values.
