You cannot install Apple’s Xcode application natively on a Windows PC. Apple’s supported requirements list macOS for each Xcode release, and Apple distributes Xcode through the Mac App Store. To develop locally, use a Mac that supports the Xcode version you need. If you only need automated cloud builds and tests, Xcode Cloud is an alternative—but it is not a Windows desktop version of Xcode.
1. Check the Xcode and Windows limitation
Xcode is Apple’s integrated development environment for building apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV and Apple Vision Pro. Its compiler, SDKs, simulators and device tools are designed to run on macOS.
Apple’s system-requirements table specifies a compatible macOS version for every Xcode release. It does not provide a supported Windows installer or a native Windows installation procedure. Downloads advertised as “Xcode for Windows” are not official Apple Xcode packages and can create security, licensing and compatibility problems.
Windows can still be part of your workflow—for example, for writing cross-platform code, managing source control or connecting to a remote Mac—but the supported Xcode application itself runs on macOS.

2. Choose a Mac that supports your target Xcode version
Before buying, borrowing or accessing a Mac remotely, identify the exact Xcode release required by your project. Then check Apple’s current Xcode system-requirements and compatibility table. It lists the required macOS version, SDK and deployment-target details, simulator and device support, and Swift language/compiler modes.
Use the exact release, not a generic Mac specification
Compatibility changes between releases. For example, Apple’s Xcode 26 release notes state that Xcode 26 requires a Mac running macOS Sequoia 15.6 or later. That is a requirement for Xcode 26, not a permanent minimum for every version.

A Mac that runs an older macOS may be unable to install the Xcode release your project needs, while a newer Mac may require an older Xcode version for a legacy project. Verify both sides before committing to hardware or a remote service.
Decide how you will access the Mac
- Use your own Mac: Best for regular interactive development, simulator use and testing on connected devices.
- Use a company or school Mac: Confirm that you have permission to install Xcode and enough storage for the release and simulator runtimes.
- Use a remote Mac: This can let you work from Windows, but Xcode still runs on the remote Mac. Check the provider’s macOS, hardware, network, account and session limitations separately.
3. Download and install Xcode on the Mac
- On the compatible Mac, open the Mac App Store.
- Search for Xcode and select Apple’s official listing.
- Choose Get or the download button, authenticate with your Apple Account if prompted, and wait for the installation to finish.
- Open Xcode from Applications or Launchpad. Accept the license, allow any requested components to install, and let Xcode finish preparing its platform and simulator files.
Apple directs users to the Mac App Store for the latest public Xcode release. Apple provides beta releases through the Apple Developer website, so use a beta only when you specifically need its SDK or features and have confirmed its macOS requirement.

What you need for learning
An Apple Account gives you access to Xcode and developer resources. Apple says you can learn Apple-platform development for free without joining the Apple Developer Program. You may need additional enrollment when distributing apps to customers or using capabilities tied to program membership.
After the first launch
- Choose Create a new Xcode project or open an existing project.
- Select the appropriate platform template, such as iOS App or macOS App.
- Choose a simulator from Xcode’s run-destination menu, or connect and trust a physical test device.
- Press the Run button to build and launch the project. If Xcode reports a missing simulator runtime or SDK, install the component it names and run the project again.
4. Choose local Xcode or Xcode Cloud for your Windows-based workflow
If your goal is interactive coding, debugging, Interface Builder, simulator use or hands-on device testing, use Xcode on a compatible Mac. Windows can control or connect to that Mac, but it does not replace the Mac requirement.

For automated builds and tests, Apple’s Xcode Cloud is a cloud CI/CD service that combines Xcode with TestFlight and App Store Connect. It can build and test a project without keeping the full build process on your Windows computer. Apple’s setup documentation requires Apple Developer Program enrollment and Xcode 15 or later.

|---|---|---|
| Full Xcode interface on your computer | Yes, on macOS | No; builds and tests run in Apple’s cloud service |

| Account prerequisite | Apple Account for Xcode access; program enrollment depends on distribution and capabilities | Apple Developer Program membership, plus Xcode 15 or later for setup |
Common Windows questions and failure points
“Can I install Xcode in Windows with an EXE?”
No supported EXE installer exists. A download claiming to be one is not Apple’s documented distribution route.

“Can a virtual machine make Xcode officially supported on Windows?”
Running macOS in an unauthorized or incompatible configuration is not the supported Windows installation described by Apple. If you need Xcode, use Apple-supported Mac hardware or an authorized remote Mac arrangement.
“Why does my Mac say this Xcode version cannot be installed?”
The Mac’s macOS version is probably below that release’s minimum, or the release does not support the Mac’s hardware. Check Apple’s compatibility entry for the exact Xcode version and update macOS only when the Mac supports it and your project permits the change.
“Do I have to pay Apple immediately?”
No. Apple says an Apple Account and Xcode are available for learning without Apple Developer Program enrollment. Enrollment becomes relevant for distribution and certain capabilities; Xcode Cloud setup specifically requires program membership.
What to do from a Windows PC
- Find the Xcode version your project requires.
- Check Apple’s current system-requirements table for that release.
- Obtain access to a Mac that meets the listed macOS and hardware requirements.
- Install Xcode from the Mac App Store, or use Apple’s Developer website for a required beta.
- Use a simulator or connected device on the Mac for interactive testing.
- Consider Xcode Cloud only for cloud build/test automation, not as a Windows installation.
The Bottom Line
There is no supported native Windows installation of Xcode. The reliable local method is a compatible Mac running the required macOS version with Xcode installed from the Mac App Store; Xcode Cloud is a separate option for Apple-platform CI/CD.
