1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteShort answer: don’t copy a generic Linux wkhtmltopdf binary into an Alpine PHP-FPM image and assume it will work. Alpine uses musl libc, while the upstream project’s generic Linux binaries have not reliably worked on Alpine, and its supported Linux table does not list Alpine. First check for a package matching your exact Alpine release and CPU architecture. If none is available, run the renderer in a compatible distribution container or service instead.
Why wkhtmltopdf is difficult to install on Alpine
wkhtmltopdf is a command-line renderer that converts HTML into PDF and image formats. It uses Qt WebKit and can run without a graphical desktop, but “headless” does not mean that it is independent of operating-system libraries.
The key constraint is the C library: Alpine uses musl, while many generic Linux binaries and distribution packages expect glibc. The wkhtmltopdf project says its generic Linux binaries have not reliably worked on Alpine and recommends distribution-specific packages because libraries, OpenSSL, libc, and fonts vary. Alpine is not listed in the project’s supported Linux table. See the wkhtmltopdf downloads page.
The project lists 0.12.6 as its stable series, released June 11, 2020. The Alpine package index records wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6-r0 in the community repository for Alpine v3.14 on x86_64, also built June 11, 2020. That historical record is not evidence that the package exists for a current Alpine branch, another architecture, or the PHP-FPM image you use. Check the Alpine package index for the precise branch and architecture before installing.

Choose an installation approach
| Approach | When it fits | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Native Alpine package | The exact Alpine branch and architecture has a maintained package in its repository. | Package availability, runtime libraries, fonts, and the resulting version in the final image. |
| Separate compatible renderer | No suitable Alpine package exists, or the application needs a distribution-specific wkhtmltopdf build. | Base distribution, architecture, pinned image/version, required libraries and fonts, and isolation boundaries. |
| Third-party Alpine image or binary | You have independently checked that a specific artifact meets your deployment needs. | Tags, architecture, maintenance, dependencies, and compatibility with the target image. Its existence is not an upstream guarantee. |
Do not use a glibc compatibility shim or a binary copied from another distribution as a universal recipe. Such workarounds depend on the binary and runtime combination; the cited upstream material does not establish them as a supported general solution.
Check the exact Alpine branch and architecture first
Identify the actual base image selected by your build, including its Alpine release and target architecture. A floating tag such as php:8-fpm-alpine can change as image maintainers update it, so confirm the resolved image rather than assuming it corresponds to an old package-index entry. Inspect the selected image and repository metadata in your build environment, then search the Alpine package index for that branch and architecture.
If the matching repository offers a maintained native package, install it with Alpine’s package manager and include the runtime dependencies and fonts required by your rendering workload. The exact package command depends on the repository state for your selected branch; the historical v3.14 x86_64 record is not a sound basis for prescribing apk add wkhtmltopdf to every current Alpine image.

PHP packaging and wkhtmltopdf compatibility are separate concerns. The PHP manual illustrates versioned Alpine packages such as php83-fpm; using the appropriate PHP-FPM package name does not change Alpine’s libc or make a glibc-oriented renderer compatible. The PHP project also notes that third-party PHP builds are unofficial. See PHP’s Alpine installation documentation.

A practical alternative is a renderer based on a distribution for which the wkhtmltopdf project provides a compatible package. Keep PHP-FPM on Alpine if that suits the application, and let it submit a controlled rendering request to a separate container or service. The renderer can receive input and return output through a restricted API, a queue, or a shared volume, depending on your architecture.
- Pin the renderer image to a deliberate version and verify its architecture and maintenance status.
- Pass only the files, HTML, or URLs it needs; avoid giving the rendering process broad access to application secrets or host files.
- Restrict network access where practical. Remote images, stylesheets, scripts, and other resources can make rendering nondeterministic and expand the security boundary.
- Define output ownership and permissions so the PHP application can read generated files without granting unnecessary write access.
- Account for the operational cost of a second container or service, including deployment, monitoring, resource limits, and request handling.
Third-party Alpine-compiled images may exist, but they are not automatically interchangeable with every PHP-FPM Alpine image. Before adopting one, review its tags, supported architectures, dependencies, and maintenance record rather than relying on the label “Alpine.”

Validate the final runtime image
A successful Docker build does not prove the renderer can work in production. Test from the same final image and architecture that will run the application. Include the fonts your pages use; otherwise font substitution can alter line wrapping, pagination, and layout even when the command exits successfully.
- Run
wkhtmltopdf --versionin the final runtime environment and confirm that the executable starts and reports the expected version. - Render representative local HTML to a PDF in a writable directory, then confirm the output exists, has nonzero size, and can be opened by your application or PDF reader.
- Test pages with the application’s real fonts, images, page breaks, and any relevant headers or footers. Check for missing shared libraries, font substitution, unloaded images, and unexpected pagination.
- Exercise the process using the same user and filesystem permissions as the PHP-FPM worker. A root-only test can conceal permission problems.
These are deployment checks, not a claim that a particular Dockerfile or image has been tested here. Rendering may also depend on network access when HTML references remote assets; local, controlled assets generally make failures easier to diagnose.

The wkhtmltopdf project gives a direct warning: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server on which wkhtmltopdf is running!” The warning appears on the project downloads page.

Do not render arbitrary user HTML or JavaScript in a process with access to application credentials, unrestricted local files, or broad network access. Sanitize user-controlled content and limit the renderer’s filesystem and network privileges. Running without a graphical display is not a security sandbox. Also assess whether a renderer whose listed stable release dates to 2020 is an acceptable maintenance and security choice for a new service.
Common installation and rendering problems
- Package not found: the selected Alpine branch or architecture may not provide it, or the relevant repository may not be enabled. Check the exact repository and index entry; do not infer current availability from the v3.14 x86_64 record.
- Executable fails with a missing library or loader error: the binary’s expected runtime does not match the image or required libraries are absent. Use a package built for the target distribution or move rendering into a compatible container; avoid assuming a copied generic binary will work.
- PDF is created but typography or pagination differs: fonts may be absent or substituted. Install and validate the fonts the application requires in the renderer’s runtime.
- Images or styles are missing: the renderer may not be able to access remote resources, or the resource URLs may not resolve from the container. Check connectivity and use controlled resource locations where possible.
- Output cannot be read by PHP-FPM: check the renderer’s output directory, file owner, permissions, and the identity used by each process.
- Build works but deployment fails: confirm that production uses the same image version, architecture, repositories, libraries, and fonts as the environment where you tested.

If your task is to capture a website as an image or PDF rather than run wkhtmltopdf inside your own PHP-FPM stack, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Here is the cURL form; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace the example URL and output filename as needed. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
