Download the 64-bit macOS installer from the official wkhtmltopdf project downloads page, run it, and then check in Terminal whether the wkhtmltoimage command is available. The installer is labeled for macOS 10.7 or later, but that old minimum does not guarantee that it will work on a current Mac—especially an Apple Silicon Mac. Verify it on the machine where you intend to use it.
wkhtmltoimage is legacy software: its latest stable release dates to June 2020, its repositories are archived, and it uses Qt WebKit, an obsolete browser engine. This guide covers the official installer, a basic test, what to do when the command is missing, and the limitations to consider before relying on it.
What to know before installing
wkhtmltoimage is a command-line utility from the wkhtmltopdf project that renders web content into an image. The official project downloads page lists a 64-bit macOS installer labeled “Installer (10.7 or later).” That label describes the installer listing; it is not evidence that the program is currently supported on every macOS version or processor architecture.
- The latest stable release shown by the project is version 0.12.6, from June 2020.
- The upstream source repository was archived on January 2, 2023; the packaging repository was archived on August 28, 2023.
- The renderer uses Qt WebKit. The project’s status history says QtWebKit was deprecated in 2015 and removed in 2016.
- The official macOS download listing does not establish a native Apple Silicon build. Test the installer on your Mac rather than assuming Intel and Apple Silicon support are equivalent.
These dates and status details matter if you need current browser behavior, security maintenance, or a supported installation path. For an existing workflow that specifically depends on wkhtmltoimage, the official binary is the practical first attempt. A source build is an advanced fallback, not a routine prerequisite.

Install the official macOS binary
- Open the official wkhtmltopdf project downloads page. Choose its macOS 64-bit installer labeled “Installer (10.7 or later)” and follow the link to the project’s GitHub release asset. Avoid unofficial download mirrors.
- Download the installer and open it. Follow the prompts presented by the installer. The project’s published material identifies the installer but does not document its individual dialog screens, so the exact prompts may vary.
- When installation finishes, open Terminal. You can find Terminal with Spotlight or in Applications > Utilities.
- Run
wkhtmltoimage --version. If the shell finds the command, it should print a version string. If it reports that the command was not found, use the checks below before changing your PATH. - Try a simple capture:
wkhtmltoimage https://example.com output.png. This asks the program to render the URL and write the result tooutput.pngin the current directory.
The command’s basic form is wkhtmltoimage URL OUTPUT_FILE. Replace the example URL with the page you want and choose an output filename ending in an image format supported by the tool. The project describes the utility as rendering HTML into image formats; this basic test checks that the executable can be invoked and produce an output file, not that every modern site will render correctly.
Check the command and PATH if Terminal cannot find it
A successful installer run does not by itself prove that the command is on the shell’s search path. The official pages examined do not specify one universal installation directory, so do not assume a particular path or copy a PATH edit from an unrelated Mac.
- In Terminal, run
wkhtmltoimage --versionagain and note the complete error message. - Inspect the installer’s package information or installation summary to learn where it placed its files. If you can identify the executable, run it by its full path followed by
--version. - If the full-path invocation works but the short command does not, compare that executable’s directory with the directories listed in your shell’s
PATH. Add the confirmed directory to your shell configuration only if needed. - Open a new Terminal window (or reload the shell configuration) and repeat
wkhtmltoimage --version.
Do not add a guessed directory to your PATH: an incorrect entry can hide the actual issue and will not make an incompatible binary run. If the executable itself fails, record the macOS version, processor architecture, exact installer filename, and full error before investigating compatibility.
Test an image capture and inspect the result
After the version check succeeds, run the example from a directory where you have permission to write files:

wkhtmltoimage https://example.com output.png
Then confirm that output.png exists and opens as an image. If you use a different output filename, give it an image extension such as .png, .jpg, or .webp only when that format is supported by your installed build. The project’s basic documentation supports the general URL-to-image workflow; the material available here does not establish a complete format matrix or modern rendering compatibility.
A page can render differently from what you see in a current browser. This is a consequence to consider with an old Qt WebKit-based renderer, not necessarily an installation failure. If the command runs but the result is blank, incomplete, or visually outdated, distinguish a rendering limitation from a command/path problem before reinstalling.
Should you build from source?
The project documents building from source, but it is an advanced route for this older codebase. The project’s packaging context involves patched Qt requirements; installing current Qt packages is not a substitute for those dependencies and does not install wkhtmltoimage.
In particular, brew install qt installs Qt 6, not the wkhtmltoimage utility. Qt’s macOS installation instructions concern the Qt framework and development tools. They do not turn a fresh Qt installation into this legacy command-line program. Consider a source build only if the official binary cannot meet your needs and you are prepared to work through the project’s older build and patched-Qt requirements.

Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a public webpage URL rather than run wkhtmltoimage specifically, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API. It is not a drop-in replacement for arbitrary local HTML rendering, but it avoids installing this legacy browser utility for URL captures. One GET request returns an image or PDF; see the API documentation.
For example, using cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
Or in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

“Command not found” or “command not found: wkhtmltoimage”
The shell cannot locate the executable. Check the installer’s recorded installation location, test the executable by its full path, and adjust PATH only after confirming the correct directory. If no executable was installed, revisit the installer result rather than assuming the command has a standard location.
The installer will not open or the binary will not run
The official listing says 64-bit and macOS 10.7 or later, but does not establish current compatibility across macOS releases or native Apple Silicon support. Record your macOS version, processor architecture, installer filename, and exact error. Do not interpret the old minimum-version label as a current compatibility guarantee.
The command runs but the capture is blank or incomplete
First verify the URL is reachable from the Mac and repeat with a simple page. If the executable starts but produces an unusable capture, the issue may be the renderer’s age or the page’s behavior rather than installation. Qt WebKit is deprecated and removed upstream; a current site may depend on browser features this engine does not handle.

A Homebrew Qt installation did not provide the command
That is expected: current Homebrew Qt is Qt 6, not wkhtmltoimage. The utility is a separate legacy project, and its build packaging has patched-Qt requirements. Use the official installer as the first route, or treat a source build as a separate, advanced task.
You are processing untrusted HTML or JavaScript
Do not treat this renderer as a safe sandbox. The project’s download page warns, in wording specifically about wkhtmltopdf, not to use it with untrusted HTML and to sanitize user-supplied HTML/JavaScript because it can lead to a complete takeover of the server running it. Since wkhtmltoimage comes from the same project and uses the same Qt WebKit engine, treat untrusted input as a serious security concern here too.
What to choose: installer or source build?
| Route | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Official precompiled installer | Most users who want to try the command on a Mac | The listing is for a 64-bit macOS installer labeled 10.7 or later; current macOS and Apple Silicon compatibility are not established, so verify on the target machine. |
| Build from source | Advanced users who cannot use the binary and can handle the old build environment | The project has patched-Qt build requirements; it is not a simple matter of installing current Qt. |
For a Mac setup, start with the official binary and confirm it using both the version command and a small capture. If you need current browser behavior or a maintained runtime, factor the project’s release and archive history into the decision before making it a dependency.
