On Debian, install wkhtmltoimage through the wkhtmltopdf package. The package contains both command-line programs. Run:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install wkhtmltopdf
wkhtmltoimage --versionIf installation succeeds, the executable should be available as /usr/bin/wkhtmltoimage on Debian Bookworm amd64. Package availability and versions depend on your Debian release, architecture, and configured repositories.
What Debian package provides wkhtmltoimage?
There is normally no separate Debian package named wkhtmltoimage. Debian ships the executable in wkhtmltopdf, whose package installs both the PDF and image renderers. Installing wkhtmltopdf is therefore the supported repository-based route when that package is available for your release.
Debian Bookworm metadata identifies version 0.12.6-2; the amd64 binary file list identifies 0.12.6-2+b1 and the path /usr/bin/wkhtmltoimage. Do not assume those exact numbers apply to another release or architecture. Debian’s tracker also records that wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6-2 was removed from testing on 2025-02-05, so “available in Bookworm” does not mean “currently available in testing.”

Before you install
- Use a Debian account with
sudoprivileges, or log in as root. - Confirm that
/etc/apt/sources.listand any files under/etc/apt/sources.list.d/point to repositories for the release you are actually running. - Check your release and architecture if a package cannot be found:
cat /etc/debian_versionanddpkg --print-architecture. - Allow outbound access to your configured Debian mirror. A package installation cannot work if APT cannot refresh its index.
Install wkhtmltoimage with APT

Refresh package indexes
Run:
sudo apt updateRead the output. Repository signature, DNS, or HTTP errors should be fixed before proceeding; otherwise APT may be working from an incomplete or stale index.

Install the package
sudo apt install wkhtmltopdfAPT resolves the package’s Qt and other shared-library dependencies. It may also recommend an X server. Review the proposed changes and enter
Yto continue. -
Check that the command is callable
wkhtmltoimage --versionThe command should print a version instead of “command not found.” The version printed is the version selected for your Debian release, not necessarily the Bookworm value above.
Verify the binary and package contents
Use these checks when you need to prove which executable is being run:
command -v wkhtmltoimage
readlink -f "$(command -v wkhtmltoimage)"
dpkg -S "$(command -v wkhtmltoimage)"
dpkg -L wkhtmltopdf | grep '/wkhtmltoimage$'On a Bookworm amd64 installation, the resolved path should be /usr/bin/wkhtmltoimage. The dpkg -S command should identify wkhtmltopdf as the owning package. If a different path appears first, inspect your PATH; an older manually installed copy may be shadowing the Debian binary.
Render your first image
Convert a local HTML file
Create a small test document:

file sample.pngThe documented invocation is wkhtmltoimage [OPTIONS]... <input file> <output file>. The output extension normally selects the image format; you can also set it explicitly with a rendering option.
Render a web URL
wkhtmltoimage https://example.com example.pngFor a remote page, DNS, TLS, redirects, authentication, robots policies, and the page’s JavaScript all affect the result. Test a simple public page first, then add your production URL.

Specify a format and dimensions
wkhtmltoimage --format png --width 1280 https://example.com example.png
wkhtmltoimage --format jpg --quality 90 --width 1280 https://example.com example.jpgThe renderer calculates page height from the content unless you set a height. JPEG quality is relevant to JPEG output; PNG is lossless. Keep the output extension consistent with the selected format.

Useful rendering options
Option names can vary with the packaged build. Run wkhtmltoimage --extended-help on the target machine for the complete list and defaults. These commonly useful options are supported by the command-line interface:

For dynamic sites, begin with a normal capture, then increase --javascript-delay only when the page visibly needs more time. A long fixed delay slows every request; a missing wait can produce an image before charts, fonts, or asynchronous content appears.
Display servers, Xvfb, and headless execution
Debian package metadata recommends an X server and lists xvfb as one provider for a virtual X server. The upstream project describes the tools as headless and says they do not require a display or display service. Because those descriptions differ, use the behavior of the Debian build on your machine as the deciding evidence.
If a server reports a Qt/X11 error, install the virtual display package and retry under it:
sudo apt install xvfb
xvfb-run -a wkhtmltoimage https://example.com example.pngIf the ordinary command works without xvfb-run, there is no need to add the wrapper to every job. If it fails only in a minimal container or service account, check the exact error, environment variables, permissions, and installed libraries rather than assuming every build has the same display requirement.
Release and architecture decisions
Bookworm repository installation
For Debian Bookworm, the repository package is the clearly documented choice in the available package metadata. It integrates with APT, receives dependency handling from Debian, and places the binary in the normal system path.

Other Debian releases
Do not copy the Bookworm version number into Bullseye, a future stable release, or testing. First query your own repositories:
apt-cache policy wkhtmltopdf
apt-cache madison wkhtmltopdfIf no candidate is shown, verify the release codename, enabled components, architecture, and mirror health. The available evidence does not establish a particular external build for releases where the repository package is absent, so choose any replacement only after checking its provenance, dependency compatibility, and update policy.

Troubleshooting
“Unable to locate package wkhtmltopdf”
APT has no indexed candidate. Run sudo apt update, inspect errors, and confirm that your sources match the running Debian release. A testing system may also be affected by the package’s recorded removal from testing.
“wkhtmltoimage: command not found” after installation
Check dpkg -L wkhtmltopdf and command -v wkhtmltoimage. If the file exists outside your PATH, invoke its absolute path or correct the account’s environment. If the package is not installed, rerun sudo apt install wkhtmltopdf.
Qt, X11, or display connection errors
Try the xvfb installation and xvfb-run -a command shown above. Also verify that the process is not being launched with a restricted temporary directory or a service account lacking required runtime permissions.
The image is blank or incomplete
Capture a simple static URL to separate renderer problems from page problems. For dynamic content, add a measured --javascript-delay; for pages that fail under JavaScript, test --disable-javascript. Check stderr for network, certificate, or resource-loading messages and confirm that the page is reachable from the Debian host itself.

Use correct file paths and verify permissions for the account running the command. If the document references local CSS, fonts, or images, test each path independently and inspect the generated HTML for malformed URLs.

The result has the wrong size or format
Set --width, optionally set --height, and make the output extension agree with --format. Remember that JPEG quality does not improve a PNG file.
Operational, security, and cost notes
- Performance: Every invocation starts a renderer and may execute JavaScript. Reuse a queue or worker process in high-volume systems, and avoid unnecessarily large fixed delays.
- Reliability: Pin the Debian release in deployment images, record
wkhtmltoimage --version, and test representative pages after package upgrades. - Security: Treat remote URLs and HTML as untrusted input. JavaScript and external requests can expose network access or sensitive cookies. Run captures with a least-privilege account and avoid passing secrets on shared command lines.
- Storage: PNG files are larger but lossless; JPEG can reduce size when photographic content and controlled quality are acceptable.
- Cost: Debian’s package is distributed through the operating system repositories; this installation itself has no software license charge. Your hosting, bandwidth, and compute costs still apply.
