There is no universally compatible Linux binary: the upstream project’s downloads page lists distribution-specific builds, and its stable series is 0.12.6, released June 11, 2020. That release date matters when deciding whether this older renderer is suitable for a new deployment.
This guide covers the selection and installation decisions without assuming your server runs a particular distribution. It also explains how to check headless operation, troubleshoot runtime dependencies, and reduce the risks of rendering untrusted input.
Before installing: identify the server environment
Do not start with a generic download or a command copied for another Linux release. First collect the details that determine which package can work:
- Distribution and release: for example, the specific Ubuntu or Debian release, or the AlmaLinux version.
- CPU architecture: use the architecture reported by the server, not the one used by your development machine.
- Execution account: identify the service user that will run image conversions, such as the account used by your web application or job worker.
- Rendering requirements: note whether the source is trusted local HTML, a controlled report, or a page that depends on JavaScript and current browser behavior.
The upstream downloads page lists builds by distribution and architecture. Its published matrix includes releases such as Debian 11, Ubuntu 22.04, AlmaLinux 8 and 9, CentOS 7, Amazon Linux 2, and openSUSE Leap 15. This is a specific, aging matrix—not evidence that every newer release is supported. Check the current package listing for your exact environment before installing.

Choose a package that matches your distribution
Prefer a distribution-specific package matching both the release and architecture. Installing through the distribution’s package manager lets that manager resolve dependencies and makes the installation easier to inventory and update. Do not assume a package for a nearby release will work: system library versions differ, and upstream explains that its builds are distribution-specific for that reason.
- Open the upstream downloads matrix. Find an entry for your distribution release and CPU architecture. If there is no exact match, treat compatibility as unconfirmed rather than choosing the closest-looking package.
- Use the package manager and instructions for that exact package. The appropriate command and package name depend on the distribution and package format; the title alone does not establish a safe universal install command.
- Review dependencies if installing manually. Extracting a package by hand does not remove its shared-library or font requirements. Resolve those requirements against the target distribution instead of downloading arbitrary libraries from another release.
- Record what was installed. Keep the package version and source in deployment notes so that output differences between servers can be investigated later.
Upstream describes static builds as still relying on system libraries and runtime font configuration. In particular, fontconfig and freetype2 are named runtime considerations. “Static” therefore should not be read as “self-contained on every Linux server.”
Verify the installation as the service user
A successful installation for an administrator does not prove that the web application can find or run the executable. Test with the account and environment that will perform production conversions.
- Check command availability. As the deployment user, run
wkhtmltoimage --version. The exact version text can vary by package; confirm that the command runs and note the reported version. - Check the executable path. If the interactive shell can run the command but the application cannot, compare the service’s
PATHwith the shell’s. Use the installed executable’s full path in application configuration if necessary. - Run a small conversion. Create a simple, trusted local HTML file and convert it using the documented invocation form:
wkhtmltoimage [OPTIONS]... <input file> <output file>. Confirm that an image file is created and can be opened. - Repeat under the actual service account. Check permissions on the executable, input file, output directory, and any assets the HTML references. A conversion that works as root may still fail under a restricted application account.
The command syntax is documented in the Debian wkhtmltoimage manpage. These checks are steps for your server; they are not a claim that a particular installation has been run or verified here.

Does wkhtmltoimage need Xvfb on a headless server?
Not always, and not never. The project describes its tools as headless, meaning a desktop display is not normally required. However, distribution packaging can add runtime expectations: Ubuntu Noble package metadata recommends an X server or Xvfb. That difference is why the answer must be based on the package installed on your server rather than on a blanket rule.
If conversion reports a display or X-server error, inspect the package’s dependency information and distribution guidance. Determine whether it is a patched Qt build and whether that package recommends or requires Xvfb or another X server. Do not install an X server automatically just because the machine has no desktop, and do not assume the word “headless” overrides package-specific requirements.
Security: treat rendering as a high-risk server operation
The wkhtmltopdf project warns against using the renderer with untrusted HTML. Its downloads and status guidance cautions that user-supplied HTML or JavaScript can create a path to complete server takeover. Sanitizing input is not a complete isolation boundary; the renderer runs with the operating-system permissions of the process that launches it.
- Keep inputs controlled. Do not pass arbitrary submitted HTML or JavaScript to the renderer. Restrict what content can be rendered and how it is constructed.
- Limit process privileges. Run conversions as a dedicated, minimally privileged service account rather than as root.
- Constrain access with operating-system controls. Upstream describes AppArmor as a way to limit filesystem access and execution in the event of exploitation. Its guidance notes that Red Hat-family systems use SELinux rather than AppArmor. Configure the policy for the actual binary location and application working directories.
- Limit what the process can reach. Apply appropriate filesystem and network restrictions for your deployment. Do not treat input sanitization alone as sufficient protection.
These are defense-in-depth measures, not a guarantee that untrusted rendering becomes safe. The project’s security warning and its discussion of the tool’s aging base are available on the wkhtmltopdf status page.

Know the age and limits of the renderer
The upstream downloads page identifies 0.12.6 as the stable series and gives its release date as June 11, 2020. This is not a claim that the software has received a current security audit. Consider whether its maintenance posture and Qt WebKit rendering base meet your security and compatibility requirements before building a new service around it.
The project’s status page discusses the aging security base associated with Qt WebKit and points to different tools for different jobs: WeasyPrint or Prince for controlled report generation, and Puppeteer for pages that rely on dynamic JavaScript. Those are upstream’s recommendations, not a universal comparison or a guarantee that one alternative fits every workload. Choose based on whether you need an image or PDF, your page’s CSS and JavaScript behavior, deployment dependencies, and the isolation you can provide.
Troubleshooting common installation and conversion failures
“Command not found”
The package may not be installed, or its executable may be outside the service account’s PATH. Confirm the package installation and executable location using the distribution’s package tools. Then test as the service user; configure the application with the correct path if its environment differs from an interactive shell.
Missing shared library
This usually indicates a package/runtime mismatch or an unresolved dependency. Prefer a build made for the target distribution release, inspect the package’s dependency output, and install the matching runtime library from that distribution. Do not try to solve it by copying a library from an unrelated Linux release.

Missing fonts or substituted type
Check that the system has the fonts required by the page and that the font configuration is available to the service account. Install or configure the appropriate distribution font and fontconfig dependencies; upstream also names freetype2 as a runtime consideration. Compare the rendering environment if the same HTML looks different across hosts.
Display or X-server error
Check the exact package build and its dependency guidance. Some distribution packages recommend Xvfb or another X server even though upstream describes the tools as headless. Follow the installed package’s requirements rather than applying a universal Xvfb fix.
Different output on another host
Compare package version, distribution libraries, installed fonts, font configuration, and Qt build features. Upstream notes that patched Qt features can differ from distribution builds, so matching only the nominal tool version may not produce identical rendering.
Conversion works interactively but fails in the application
Run the test under the application’s account and environment. Check its PATH, read access to input assets, write access to the output directory, and any confinement policy. If the process is restricted by AppArmor or SELinux, ensure the policy matches the installed executable and the directories the renderer must use.

Can I use a package built for another Ubuntu or Debian release?
The upstream project lists distribution-specific builds because Linux system library versions differ. A package for a different release may work, but compatibility is not established by the release name alone; use an exact match or test the deployment thoroughly before relying on it.

The documented Debian manpage is packaged under wkhtmltopdf, but the installation contents depend on the distribution package. Check that package’s file list rather than assuming a particular set of executables.
