You can install Windows on an AVITA Altum from a USB drive by creating Microsoft installation media on another working PC, starting the Altum from that USB, and following Windows Setup. Before you begin, back up your files and confirm the boot-menu instructions for your exact Altum model with AVITA: the available official material does not establish an Altum-specific boot key, recovery image, or driver package.
Decide whether a clean USB install is necessary
If Windows still starts, consider a less disruptive repair or reinstall before wiping the laptop. Microsoft’s installation media can also be used for an in-place reinstall, with options to keep personal files and apps, keep files only, or keep nothing. A clean installation from USB is appropriate when Windows will not start or you deliberately want a fresh setup, but it can remove the existing installation and manufacturer customizations.

Back up and check your Windows license
- Copy important files to external storage or a cloud account before reinstalling.
- If Windows opens, note the edition shown under Settings > System > About. Install the edition that matches the device’s digital license.
- Confirm that Windows is activated or that you have a valid product key. If you use BitLocker and need recovery options, have the recovery key available.
- Connect the laptop to power and disconnect external drives you do not want to risk selecting during Setup.
Create installation media on another PC
- On a working Windows PC, use Microsoft’s official Create installation media for Windows instructions to make a bootable installer.
- Use an empty USB drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Creating the media may erase the drive’s contents, so copy anything important off it first.
- Keep the USB installer connected until you have selected it as the Altum’s startup device.
Start the AVITA Altum from USB
With the laptop off, connect the installer and use the boot menu or firmware settings to start from USB. The correct key is model-specific. Microsoft lists common firmware keys such as Esc, Delete, F1, F2, F10, F11, and F12, but directs users to the manufacturer for the right key on a particular PC; none of those keys is verified here as the Altum key. Check the manual or ask AVITA using the full model number before changing firmware settings.

If the USB drive is missing from the boot menu, consult the exact model’s instructions or AVITA support rather than changing Secure Boot or switching UEFI/BIOS modes at random. Microsoft Learn warns that starting Setup in the wrong firmware mode can make Windows installation fail; see its UEFI and BIOS mode guidance.
Run Windows Setup without erasing the wrong disk
- Choose the language, time, and keyboard options, then continue with Windows Setup.
- When asked for an edition, select the one matching the Altum’s existing license. If Setup offers I don’t have a product key, Microsoft says a key held in the device firmware may be applied automatically, and a digital license can reactivate after reinstalling. If you cannot establish that the device has either license route, stop and confirm before proceeding.
- At the disk and partition screen, identify the disk intended for Windows by its size and layout. If more than one disk appears, do not delete or format partitions on the other disks.
- For a clean install, deleting partitions on the intended Windows disk erases their data. Proceed only after confirming your backup and the target disk. Select the resulting unallocated space and continue.
- Let Setup copy files and restart as needed. If the laptop restarts to the USB installer again, remove the USB or select the internal drive using the model’s documented startup instructions.
Complete setup, activation, and device checks
Finish Windows’ first-run setup, connect to the internet, and check activation in Windows Settings. Activation may happen automatically when the installed edition matches the device’s digital license; major hardware changes can complicate activation.

Generic Microsoft installation media may not include the Altum’s hardware-specific drivers or factory applications. Microsoft notes that OEM recovery images can include those components. The available AVITA support material does not confirm an Altum-specific recovery image or driver download, so contact the regional AVITA support channel with the full model number if Wi-Fi, touchpad, display, storage, or another component does not work after installation.
