On a Linux system with Snap working, install Viber by running sudo snap install viber in a terminal. You will also need a Viber account already registered on a phone to activate the desktop app.
1. Check that Snap is available
Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and later have Snap ready by default, according to Snapcraft’s Viber installation instructions. If you use an older Ubuntu release or an Ubuntu flavor without Snap enabled, install the snapd service first.
- Open a terminal and update the package list:
sudo apt update. - Install snapd:
sudo apt install snapd. - Log out and back in, or restart the computer, so Snap’s paths are updated.
These setup commands are for Ubuntu and Ubuntu-based systems using apt; other distributions have their own snapd setup instructions.
2. Install Viber with Snap
Run this command in the terminal:
sudo snap install viber
The Snap Store package name is viber, and its listed publisher is Viber Media S.à r.l. Snapcraft describes Snap packages generally as updating automatically and supporting graceful rollback; that general description is not a guarantee about a specific Viber release or a particular rollback outcome.

3. Activate Viber on the desktop
Desktop Viber works only after you have registered Viber on a phone, as Viber’s supported-platforms page explains. Once the app is installed:
- Open Viber on the computer. A QR code should appear.
- On the phone with your registered Viber account, open Viber and use its QR scanner to scan the code on the computer.
- Approve activation on the phone, then tap Sync.
If the QR screen does not appear, Viber’s desktop setup guide suggests checking whether the required network ports are open.

Which Linux systems does Viber support?
Viber names 64-bit Ubuntu and Fedora as supported Linux desktop platforms. It also cautions that regular updates and support for Linux are limited, and that support may not be available for a device or version it does not list. The Snap Store’s installation route may be usable on additional distributions with Snap, but that should not be taken as a promise of equivalent official Viber support.

Viber’s support page links to Linux downloads under “Need another version?”, while the Snap Store offers the command-line installation above. Choose based on your distribution, whether snapd is already set up, and whether you prefer Snap or Viber’s download route. Viber’s published information does not establish that either method is universally more reliable.

Ubuntu describes both Snap and deb as package formats for apps and software, and notes that App Center shows Snaps by default. For the Snap route in this guide, use the Snap Store package command.
