Install the TestNG Eclipse plug-in through Eclipse Marketplace or Eclipse’s Help → Install New Software… menu, then restart Eclipse and confirm the TestNG view appears. The plug-in adds TestNG workflows to the IDE; Maven and Gradle projects still need TestNG configured as a project dependency.

Check the requirements first

The official TestNG Eclipse plug-in documentation lists Eclipse 4.2 or later as a requirement. It specifies Java 11 or later for plug-in versions 7.8.0 and later, and Java 8 for versions through 7.4.0. It does not state the Java requirement for every version between those ranges, so check the documentation for the exact release if you plan to install one of them. See the official TestNG Eclipse plug-in download page.

These published requirements do not establish compatibility for every combination of Eclipse release, operating system, and plug-in version.

Install TestNG from Eclipse Marketplace

  1. Open the TestNG listing in Eclipse Marketplace.
  2. Use the listing’s Install control. The official instructions describe dragging its Install icon onto the Eclipse workspace.
  3. Follow the prompts in Eclipse to complete installation.
  4. Restart Eclipse when prompted.

This route starts from the Marketplace listing and does not require you to enter an update-site URL yourself.

Install TestNG from the official update site

  1. In Eclipse, choose Help → Install New Software….
  2. In the Work with field, enter https://testng.org/testng-eclipse-update-site.
  3. Wait for Eclipse to load the available software, then make sure the checkbox beside the repository URL is selected.
  4. Choose Next and follow the installation wizard to its completion.
  5. Restart Eclipse.

The official update-site listing also provides version-specific repository URLs. Use the main release site for a regular installation; choose a versioned repository only when you intentionally need a particular release. The listing reviewed for this guide included versions through 7.11.0, but its contents can change.

Confirm that Eclipse recognizes the plug-in

  1. After restarting, choose Window → Show View → Other….
  2. Expand or select the Java category.
  3. Look for the TestNG view.

The plug-in also adds a File → New → TestNG entry point for creating a TestNG class. These are useful checks that the IDE integration is available; they do not by themselves confirm that a project has its framework dependency configured. See the TestNG Eclipse plug-in documentation.

Understand what the plug-in does—and what it does not do

The Eclipse plug-in adds IDE workflows such as creating TestNG classes and launching tests from classes, methods, groups, or suite XML files. A Java project also needs TestNG on its own build configuration. Installing the plug-in should not be treated as adding that project dependency.

For a Maven or Gradle project, follow the current dependency instructions on the official TestNG download page and select a version that fits your project. The plug-in documentation describes an optional M2E integration plug-in and recommends it for Maven projects; it is not stated as a prerequisite for every TestNG project.

Troubleshoot installation problems

Eclipse cannot load the update site

Check whether a proxy or corporate firewall is preventing Eclipse from reaching the repository. TestNG’s troubleshooting page identifies https://testng.org/testng-p2-update-site as the official P2 update site and discusses an offline update-site option when the IDE cannot reach the online site. These are troubleshooting options, not guaranteed fixes; follow the official instructions for your situation.

The plug-in installs but does not appear on Windows

TestNG’s troubleshooting guidance advises checking whether the Eclipse installation folder grants your user full rights. Then restart Eclipse and check Window → Show View → Other… → Java again.
