On openSUSE Leap installed in Immutable mode, install desktop apps as Flatpaks and use Podman or Distrobox containers for many command-line and development tools. Both approaches keep those apps and their dependencies out of the host’s base package state. If software must be installed on the host, use transactional-update—but that changes the host snapshot, so it does not meet a strict “leave the base unchanged” requirement.
This guidance is for Leap configured in Immutable mode, not a conventional Leap installation. The openSUSE announcement identifies Leap 16.1 as the first Leap release to offer this mode and describes it in release-candidate/testing terms; check the Leap 16.1 announcement and the status of your release before following release-specific instructions.
First, confirm you are using Immutable mode
“Immutable” does not mean you cannot add software. It means the host root is read-only during normal operation, and changes to host packages are handled transactionally rather than applied directly to the running root.
Leap 16.1 is the first Leap release identified by openSUSE as offering Immutable mode. The announcement says to boot the usual Leap 16.1 installation image and select Immutable mode in Agama. It describes the release in its release-candidate/testing phase, so do not assume that every image or instruction applies to a later final release. Check the documentation for your installed release: the openSUSE documentation index lists separate Leap documentation.

Traditional Leap instructions using YaST or a direct host command such as sudo zypper install package are for a different installation model. Leap 15.6’s startup guide, for example, documents conventional software and repository management; do not apply those host instructions unchanged to Immutable mode.
Choose the installation method that fits the software

These are distinct workflows, not a guarantee that every app can run in a container or Flatpak. The openSUSE Planet announcement recommends containers with Podman or Distrobox, or Flatpak on desktops, for additional software. It also documents transactional host package installation when needed.

Install a desktop application with Flatpak
Check whether Flatpak and an appropriate remote are already available on your exact Immutable image before setting anything up. The Flathub instructions describe Flatpak as available in the default repositories of currently maintained Leap versions, but that general guidance does not establish what every Immutable image includes by default.
- Check the image first. Consult the documentation for your Leap release and inspect whether Flatpak is installed and whether the desired app source is configured. Avoid repeating setup commands if they are already in place.
- If Flatpak is absent and the documented setup applies, install it:
sudo zypper install flatpak. Flathub documents this command for Leap; verify it is appropriate for your image before running it. - Add Flathub if it is not configured:
flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://dl.flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo. - Restart to complete setup. This is the restart step specified by Flathub’s openSUSE setup instructions.
After setup, find the application in the software interface available on your desktop or use Flatpak’s app-install workflow. Verify that the app comes from a source you trust and that it supports your needs. A Flatpak avoids installing the app’s RPM dependencies into the host base, but initial Flatpak setup itself may involve system configuration.

Use a container for development tools and many command-line apps
A container is a practical fit when you need a collection of development packages or a command-line environment without adding each package to the Leap host. Distrobox provides a convenient way to work with a containerized Linux environment; its Leap 16.0 manual documents installing development packages inside a container and exporting applications or binaries to the host user environment.
- Check availability and support. Confirm that Distrobox and a container manager such as Podman are installed or supported for your particular Immutable image. The available documentation does not establish these as defaults on every image.
- Create or enter a suitable container using the workflow documented for your installed Distrobox and container-manager versions.
- Install the tools inside the container, using that container’s distribution package manager. This keeps those packages in the container workflow rather than adding each one to the host package snapshot.
- Export an app or binary if useful. Distrobox documents exporting applications or binaries so they can be launched from the host user environment while remaining container-based.
See the Distrobox Leap 16.0 documentation for its examples. A container is not a substitute for every kind of host integration: a driver or component that must operate as part of the host may need a transactional host change instead.

Install a package into the host with transactional-update
When software genuinely needs to be part of the host, openSUSE documents this command:
sudo transactional-update pkg install <package>
Replace <package> with the package name. This operation creates a new system snapshot with the package change rather than modifying the currently running root. Reboot to use the new snapshot. The change is transactional, but it still changes host package state, so it is not the method to choose if keeping the base unchanged is a hard requirement.

The Leap 16.1 announcement also documents sudo transactional-update rollback as a way to return if something goes wrong. Follow the documentation for your release before using it; the announcement does not establish compatibility for every package or identify every case that requires host installation.
Be deliberate about package and repository sources
For host RPMs, check where a package comes from and whether its repository is appropriate for your release. The openSUSE software-procurement guide is written for Tumbleweed rather than Leap Immutable, so it is useful for the general tradeoff—not as a Leap Immutable command guide.
