Install Snipping Tool without opening Microsoft Store
This method bypasses the Store interface, but WinGet still uses Microsoft’s Store catalog and package service when you specify the msstore source.
1. Check whether WinGet is available
- Open Start.
- Type PowerShell and press Enter.
- Run winget.
If WinGet is available, PowerShell displays its help and command list. If it reports that winget is not recognized, try registering App Installer or install WinGet using the steps below.
2. Search for the Snipping Tool package
Search the Microsoft Store source to check the package name and identifier:

winget search “Snipping Tool” –source msstore
The Microsoft Store product ID for Snipping Tool is 9MZ95KL8MR0L. Check the search result before installing, especially if the ID differs in your results.
3. Install Snipping Tool with WinGet
Run this command in PowerShell or Command Prompt:
winget install –id 9MZ95KL8MR0L –source msstore –accept-source-agreements –accept-package-agreements
The options mean:

WinGet may request permission to elevate the installation. Approve the prompt; declining it can cause the installation to fail.
4. Open Snipping Tool
- Open Start.
- Type Snipping Tool.
- Select the app from the results.
If it does not appear immediately, search again after installation finishes. If Start has not refreshed its app registration, sign out and back in, then search again.

Useful Snipping Tool shortcuts

The Windows 11 Snipping Tool supports image snips and video snips. Microsoft says additional features, including Perfect screenshot and Color picker, are available on supported Copilot+ PCs.
What to do if WinGet is not installed
Supported Windows 11 installations normally include WinGet through the App Installer system component. App Installer is normally delivered and updated through Microsoft Store, but Microsoft documents an installation path outside the Store using the official WinGet release package.
Register an installed copy of WinGet
WinGet registration may happen asynchronously after the first Windows sign-in. If it is installed but unavailable, open PowerShell and run:
Add-AppxPackage -RegisterByFamilyName -MainPackage Microsoft.DesktopAppInstaller_8wekyb3d8bbwe
Close PowerShell, open a new window, and test with winget.

Install WinGet from its GitHub release package
- Open Microsoft’s latest WinGet release page.
- Scroll to the Assets section.
- Download the current stable .msixbundle package.
- Open the downloaded package and select Update, or follow the installation prompt.
- Open a new PowerShell window and run winget to verify the client.
The asset filename can vary by release. As of August 7, 2026, the latest release page resolves to Windows Package Manager 1.29.280. Microsoft says the package may install additional dependencies automatically; manual installation requires an internet connection and administrator privileges.
Once WinGet works, run the Snipping Tool installation command:
winget install –id 9MZ95KL8MR0L –source msstore –accept-source-agreements –accept-package-agreements
Troubleshooting
“winget is not recognized”
App Installer or WinGet may be missing, may not have registered after first sign-in, or may not be available through PATH. Try the registration command above. If that does not help, install the current stable WinGet package from the official GitHub release page.
The WinGet package will not install
Check the following before retrying:
- Use an administrator account and approve any required permission prompt.
- Confirm that the computer has an active network connection.
- Download the current stable package from the release page’s Assets section.
- Install any dependency packages requested by Windows.
The Store source does not respond
Update WinGet’s configured sources:
winget source update
Then retry the installation. If the search result displays a different identifier, use the exact ID shown by winget search “Snipping Tool” –source msstore. Do not install an unrelated app just because its name contains “Snipping Tool.”

Installation stops after a permission prompt
WinGet may request elevation to install the app. If you decline or close the prompt, installation can fail. Run the command again and approve the prompt.

Snipping Tool installs but is missing from Start
Search for Snipping Tool again after the installation finishes. If Start has not refreshed its app registrations, sign out and back in, then search again.
Windows versions and unsupported situations
WinGet is supported on Windows 11 and Windows 10 version 1809, build 17763, or later. Microsoft’s documented WinGet troubleshooting procedure is not supported on Windows Server 2019 because Microsoft Store and related dependencies are unavailable there.
Windows Sandbox does not include WinGet or the Microsoft Store app by default. Microsoft documents bootstrapping WinGet there with the Microsoft.WinGet.Client PowerShell module and Repair-WinGetPackageManager, or downloading the WinGet package from GitHub.

No official standalone Snipping Tool .exe installer is provided on Microsoft’s current support page. Snipping Tool is distributed as a packaged app through the Microsoft Store catalog. WinGet lets you avoid opening the Store interface, but it does not provide a conventional standalone EXE installer.

Microsoft’s current support documentation does not provide a standalone Snipping Tool .exe installer. The app is distributed as a packaged application through the Microsoft Store catalog, and WinGet can install it without opening the Store interface.
Why does Windows ask me to accept agreements during installation?
WinGet’s Microsoft Store source and the package can each have an agreement prompt. The –accept-source-agreements and –accept-package-agreements options accept those prompts automatically.
