To install Rosetta 2 on an M1, M2, or M3 Mac, connect to the internet and open an Intel-based app. When macOS asks, click Install and enter the macOS user name and password it requests. You can also install it from Terminal with softwareupdate --install-rosetta. Rosetta runs in the background; it is not a separate app you open.
Install Rosetta from an app prompt
- Connect your Mac to the internet.
- Open an Intel-based app. If Rosetta is missing, macOS will offer to install it.
- Click Install, then enter the macOS user name and password requested to authorize installation.
- Continue using or reopen the Intel app. Rosetta works automatically in the background.
If the Intel app opens without an installation prompt, Apple says Rosetta is already installed and working.
Install Rosetta with Terminal
Use this alternative if you prefer a direct command or want to install Rosetta before opening an Intel app:
- Connect your Mac to the internet.
- Open Applications > Utilities > Terminal.
- Enter
softwareupdate --install-rosettaand press Return. - Follow any on-screen instructions.
This is Apple’s published installation command. You do not need a separate Rosetta installer from a third-party site. See Apple’s instructions for using Intel-based apps on Apple silicon.

Check whether an app needs Rosetta
In Finder, select the app and choose File > Get Info, or press Command-I. Check the Kind field:
- Application (Intel): The app is built for Intel and needs Rosetta to run on an Apple silicon Mac.
- Application (Universal): The app supports both Intel and Apple silicon. It can run natively, without Rosetta.
- Application (Apple silicon): The app is built for Apple silicon and does not need Rosetta.
Apple’s UK guidance documents another discovery method for macOS 27 and later: open Apple menu > System Settings > General > About, then select Details beside Intel-based Apps. That list covers recently used apps or apps in common locations, so Finder’s Get Info window remains a useful way to check a particular app. See Apple Support UK.

“Open using Rosetta” is a separate setting
Some Universal apps offer an Open using Rosetta checkbox in Get Info. The app developer decides whether to provide it. Selecting the checkbox makes that Universal app run as an Intel app, which can help it use Intel-only plug-ins, extensions, or other add-ons. It is not required to install Rosetta for an Intel-only app. If the add-on later supports Apple silicon, Apple recommends deselecting the option.
Update Intel apps when native versions are available
Rosetta lets Intel-based software run, but Apple recommends replacing an Intel app with its Universal or Apple silicon version when available. For an App Store app, check the App Store; otherwise, look in the app’s update control or on the developer’s website. Ask the developer if it is unclear whether a native version exists. Plug-ins, extensions, updaters, and other add-ons may need their own updates.

Apple says that in most cases users will not notice a performance difference when an app runs using Rosetta. That is a qualitative statement, not a benchmark or a guarantee for every app. Apple still recommends native versions for optimal performance and future compatibility.

Apple’s current support guidance says Rosetta is available for Apple silicon Macs through macOS 27. Beginning with macOS 28, Apple plans to retain Rosetta functionality only for certain older, unmaintained games that depend on Intel-based frameworks. The boundary is stated by macOS version, not by whether a Mac has an M1, M2, or M3 chip; Apple’s policy may change. Check Apple’s current US support guidance or UK support guidance for the latest details.
