The steps below cover the supported Docker setup and YouTube publication; they do not claim that a continuous publication automatically restarts its video at the end.
What you need before installing
- A Docker-capable host. The official Linux installation guide specifies a 64-bit Intel or AMD CPU and a current Linux distribution. See datarhei’s Linux installation requirements.
- A network configuration that allows the services you intend to use to reach the host. The official Quick Start says public port forwarding is needed for full functionality; which ports must be reachable depends on your setup.
- A valid YouTube streaming ID and an active YouTube account for the destination.
- Host storage for Restreamer’s configuration and internal data, as in the official example.
Install the official Restreamer Docker image
On the Docker host, run datarhei’s Quick Start command:
docker run -d --restart=always --rm --name restreamer
-v /opt/restreamer/config:/core/config
-v /opt/restreamer/data:/core/data
-p 8080:8080 -p 8181:8181
-p 1935:1935 -p 1936:1936
-p 6000:6000/udp
datarhei/restreamer:latest
The bind mounts store configuration from /core/config and internal data from /core/data in the corresponding host directories. The example maps HTTP/HTTPS and RTMP/RTMPS ports, along with UDP 6000 for SRT-related traffic. Do not expose ports you do not need; configure host and network access for the services you will actually use. The full command and port details are in the official Quick Start.
The command uses the latest image tag shown in that example. It is a moving tag, not a pinned version, so a later pull may use a different image. For a reproducible deployment, choose and record an appropriate fixed image version using the project’s current guidance. The project recommends its official Docker images and describes this as its most tested installation method: official recommendations.

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Open the web interface and secure it
- After the container starts, open
http://<host-ip>:8080/uiin a browser on a network that can reach the host. Replace<host-ip>with the Docker host’s IP address. The documentation’s example useshttp://device-ip:8080/ui. - Complete the initial setup and choose a secure, unique password. Avoid reusing a password from another service, especially if the interface is reachable beyond your local network.
- If you need access from outside the local network, configure routing and firewall rules deliberately. The Quick Start notes that public port forwarding is needed for full functionality; do not treat every mapped port as automatically safe to expose.
Configure a YouTube publication
- In Restreamer, create a Publication Service and select YouTube. Restreamer’s guide describes this workflow in How can I use YouTube with the Restreamer?
- Enter a valid YouTube streaming ID for the stream you intend to publish to, then save the publication. Keep the ID private; anyone who obtains a stream key may be able to broadcast to its destination.
- Start the stream in Restreamer. When the connection is established, the bitrate appears in the main Restreamer window, according to the guide.
- For a source with no sound, Restreamer’s wizard recommends adding a silent audio channel and notes that some services, including YouTube, require an active audio channel. This is Restreamer’s guidance, not a complete statement of every current YouTube account or stream requirement. See the Restreamer wizard documentation.
Restreamer’s guide also warns: “Always end the stream on YouTube first after an event. If you interrupt the stream in the Restreamer during a live stream, YouTube may not save your live stream in the DVR archive.” To reduce that risk, end the event in YouTube before stopping the Restreamer publication.
Does this setup loop a local video file?
Not on the basis of the documented steps above. Restreamer’s official pages reviewed for this workflow describe Docker installation, YouTube publication, and source configuration, but they do not establish a built-in local-file repeat setting or provide its configuration syntax. The documented wizard lists network, hardware, Raspberry Pi camera, USB, SRT, and internal RTMP choices; that list does not verify a local media-file loop workflow. See the network source documentation.

A YouTube publication staying connected is not proof that the media source will restart when it reaches the end. Do not assume a GUI toggle, environment variable, FFmpeg option, or Compose setting will enable looping unless current Restreamer documentation explicitly supports that exact method. If your requirement is to repeat a local recording continuously, confirm the supported source configuration for the Restreamer release you deploy before relying on it. This guide does not provide an unverified loop command.
Common setup problems
- The web interface does not load: confirm the container is running, use the Docker host’s reachable IP with port 8080 and the
/uipath, and check local firewall or routing rules. - The YouTube publication will not connect: verify that the selected service is YouTube, the streaming ID is valid, the YouTube destination is active, and the host can reach the required network services.
- External services cannot reach the host: check the relevant port mappings and network forwarding. The Quick Start’s example maps 8080, 8181, 1935, 1936, and UDP 6000, but your required exposure depends on the services you use.
- There is no audio: check whether the source provides an active audio channel. Restreamer recommends silent audio for a silent source because some services, including YouTube, require an active channel.
- The recording stops at its end: Docker installation and YouTube publication alone do not prove that local media repeats. Confirm a documented loop method for your exact Restreamer version rather than assuming the publication will restart the source.
- The YouTube archive is missing: if ending the stream matters for DVR retention, end the event on YouTube before stopping the Restreamer publication, as the vendor documentation advises.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos playing as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is an alternative that does not require a Docker host: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running, so nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploads rather than broadcasting a camera.
