npx reg-suit runReg-suit compares image files; it does not capture your React UI for you. Before running a meaningful comparison, create screenshots of the pages, components, or states you want to test and configure Reg-suit to read that image directory.
What Reg-suit does in a React project
Reg-suit is a Node.js command-line tool for visual regression testing. It compares supplied images; it is not a React component you import into the application. Your screenshot workflow renders the UI states and produces image files, while Reg-suit handles comparison. See the Reg-suit repository for the project overview.
Install Reg-suit locally
From the root of your React repository, add Reg-suit as a development dependency and run its initializer:

npm install -D reg-suit
npx reg-suit initA project-local dependency records the CLI with the project tooling in the package manifest and lets you invoke it through npx. The initializer is interactive; it configures the project and can install plugins. Select integrations based on what you intend to use rather than treating cloud storage or notifications as requirements for local image comparison. The npm package documentation describes initialization and configuration.
Alternative: install the CLI globally
The project README also documents installing the command globally, then running it from the project directory:

reg-suit runUse the repository’s actual path in place of path-to-your-project. The README documents this route; the official Puppeteer demo uses a project development dependency and npx. Neither source establishes one installation method as universally best.
Prepare screenshots and configure the image directory
Reg-suit needs image files to compare. Set up a separate capture step that renders the UI states you care about and saves screenshots consistently. The official Puppeteer demonstration shows browser-based screenshot capture and points Reg-suit at the resulting image directory. The project README also points to React and Storybook-oriented examples; it does not require one capture framework for all React projects.

Reg-suit’s configuration file is regconfig.json in the project root. Its core section uses actualDir for the directory containing current images. The optional working directory defaults to .reg; optional difference thresholds include thresholdRate and thresholdPixel. Use the directory your screenshot script actually writes to—there is no universal screenshot-folder name established by the documentation.
- Render the selected pages, components, or UI states and save their images.
- Set
actualDirto the directory containing those images. - Run
npx reg-suit initand choose only integrations needed for your workflow. - Run
npx reg-suit runlocally; once the command works in the repository, you can invoke the same command in CI.

Run comparisons and decide which integrations you need
After the capture script has produced images and the configuration points to them, run:
npx reg-suit runReg-suit can run locally or in CI. A publisher plugin is useful when snapshots need to persist across runs or CI agents: the project lists publishers for Amazon S3 and Google Cloud Storage. Those plugins are optional for comparing local image files. The project also lists key-generator and notifier plugins for GitHub, GitLab, Slack, and Chatwork; add them only if their workflow is useful to your team. Optional GitHub pull-request reporting
For the GitHub notifier route, the official plugin guide documents installing reg-notify-github-plugin, running reg-suit prepare -p notify-github, installing the Reg-suit GitHub App for the repository, and obtaining the repository client ID. Follow that guide for its current setup details; GitHub App screens and plugin compatibility can change.
Troubleshooting
- The run has no images to compare: Reg-suit compares files rather than rendering the React application. Run the screenshot capture step first, then verify that
actualDirpoints to the directory where it saved images. - The CLI command is not found: With a project dependency, invoke it as
npx reg-suitfrom the project directory after installation. With a global install, check that npm’s global executable directory is available on your shell’s PATH. - Initialization does not match the repository layout: Review the generated
regconfig.jsonand setactualDirto the real screenshot output directory. Do not assume the capture demo’s directory is correct for your own script. - CI cannot access historical snapshots: Local files may not persist between CI agents or runs. Configure a publisher such as the documented S3 or GCS plugin if you need persistent storage.
- GitHub notifications do not appear: Check the plugin guide’s setup steps, including the GitHub App installation and repository client ID. The notifier is optional and is separate from basic image comparison.
